LA ROCHELLE - 5th May 2007 (Saturday 25º) Wake up at 8:45am. Heavy drapes, earplugs and red wine last night ensure we sleep in - the day is half gone! We wander down to the breakfast area where we are served by a lovely little French woman who is a busy as a blue arsed fly. The room is so quiet that the normal clinking and clanking of cutlery makes you wince and noises that would normally be absorbed (e.g. conversation) bounce around the glass and tile enclosure. Stirring your coffee can be compared in relative decibels to those generated by a Boeing Jet Engine. Two women at an adjoining table are whispering surreptitiously. I suspect they are planning the election of a French woman as President - but after finetuning my eavesdropping I realise they ... read more

If I had to choose one word to describe what we did today, it would be the word walk, because basically that’s all we did. We woke up, had the complimentary breakfast in the hotel, and just walked. Not far from our hotel was situated not another famous tourist attraction, but the most famous attraction, Stodolni Street. This street is literally crazy, it was crowded with people. The atmosphere was hyper and upbeat and had somewhat of a music-based theme. Whether you’re an oldies type of person or a new, hip, today type of person, anyone could find their type of music. Abby and I stuck together and explored every single type of music that was there. It was pretty fun!! Another feature that this street contained was something that I’ll never forget; I swear there ... read more

So here we are, living the highlife in the French Riviera! Leah and I had our own tour guide, Brendan, to show us around his old stomping ground, the quaint town of Antibes and along the southern coastline of France. The first stop on the itinerary, by no surprise, is Antibes’ marina for a guided tour and a detailed history of each of the boats there. How he knows, or remembers this stuff, neither of us knew! We had a walk through the town centre, where Leah and I got straight to the important stuff and found a crepe shop. But of course discarded the shop assistant’s advice and both got a crepe with banana and chocolate ice-cream - no matter how messy it was going to be! The next morning we walked further around to ... read more

Day 12...beers and Capri We arrived in Sorrento on an overnight train from Venice. The train was a little rough, and sleep was minimal, however the moneys sove from the night's accomodations proved great for some nice "made in Sorrento" in-laid wood souvenirs. The train from Naples was a little dis-heartening, with young children begging for change while their parents looked on, and constant warnings of pick-pockets. Susan was feeling a little uneasy, and I admit so was I. However, upon arriving in Sorrento she quickly understood why I insisted we add this location to our Italian Honeymoon. After checking into our hotel room (Hotel del Corso - just off the main square) and getting cleaned up we walked down to the marina (Piccola) and enjoyed a couple of cold beers while taking in the wonderful ... read more

As announced in my previous entry, I am putting up the pics I took at Madame Tussaud's. Dozens of wax statues, some of them excellent, some not that great- Jennifer Aniston, Keira Knightley, Michael Jackson, Penelope Cruz failed to impress me, as it took some time to actually recognize them. Everybody was taking photos, basically that is pretty much all you do there. It was cool, but not something I would go and do twice. But that's just my personal opinion, you go and see for yourselves, you might enjoy it!!! ... read more

There's a few things to see around Nantes while you're enjoying the sun and rain. The drive up to St Nazaire is not all that scenic but when you arrive there's lots of big boys toys to check out. Starting with the freshly made cruise ship the MSC Orchestra, hot of the press so to speak, getting loaded up for it's maiden voyage. Then there's the ship yard where they are building another cruise ship. These things are built in sections and then a crane drops each piece into place. After that it was off to the submarine that they have in one of the u-boat pens. Not bad but I think the one at the National Maritime Museum in Sydney or the Nucleur Sub at Cherbourg are done up better. But the interesting bit is ... read more

Yep - you can do all that (and probably more) in Amsterdam, where I headed on the bank holiday weekend (that’s what they call them here, instead of ‘long weekend’) with Grace (a friend from Oz who now works with me - yes it is a small world), her husband and a mate of his. Before we went, we had some difficulty getting accommodation. We were trying for a houseboat or an apartment, but the fact that we only wanted to stay two nights meant nothing was available. There was also a lack of hotel rooms (excepting the extraordinarily expensive ones). However, at the last minute, we managed to get an apartment after all!! Could not have worked out better - the apartment was great, heaps of space, great view and right in town. Nevertheless, I ... read more

Day 8: Sat, May 5th Today we left Scotland :(. We flew Easyjet from Inverness to Luton (north of London). Today we set aside to visit our friends in Mildenhall. We hadn’t seen them in a few years, so we really wanted to stop by and catch up with them. When we got to Luton, we picked up another rental car. This time we got a Vauxhall Vectra, which is bigger than we wanted. But it had navigation, so that sort of helped. From Luton we drove back towards the East Anglia area. There isn’t much in the Mildenhall area as far as sight-seeing, but we did stop very quickly in Bury St. Edmunds. There is a ruined abbey there, and it’s also where The Magna Carta was signed. It seemed like a nice town, but ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Dingle Peninsula May 5th 2007

Hello everyone -- writing tonight about our day spent yesterday on Ireland's lovely Dingle Peninsula! We got an early start out of Killarney and headed northwest toward Dingle. Our first stop along the long and winding road was Inch Spit... a long sandbar in a town called Inch. It was actually totally, shockingly lovely -- it was quite warm, cloudless and beautiful. Almost like we were in Hawaii again. We've included some photos below... Erin was inspired, as you can see. Well, Kevin was inspired to make her do that... We got back on the road and eventually made it to Dingle town, the place of Rick Steves' dreams. It really is a fantastic place -- reminded us of a New England coastal town somehow. We arranged for a boat tour (more on that in a ... read more
