So, I got up and got packed as Alicia did the same for she was heading to the islands for the weekend. We then caught the metro and parted our ways. I got to the airport check-in to be told there is a good chance i might not make today's flight as they were nearing the plane's weight limit. So, i had to wait along with other people to see how many of us will make the flight. Well, it came down to a couple, me, and one other lady left w/ just 30 minutes before the plane departs. She then said she can take one more person and since the couple didn't want to split up, i was next on the list!!! Thank god!!! So, i rushed onto the plane and was on my way ... read more

Cinco de Mayo in Provence. We made our way to Avignon after breakfast and went to a market (where I felt I got more dirty looks because of the video camera than anywhere else on these trips) and walked through town to the Palace Square. We did not go inside the Palace of the Popes, but we did take a quick peek into the cathedral next door. It was already time to head to the location of our BBQ lunch by that time. The weather was better (not sunny, but not raining) when we arrived, and the food was already being prepared. Regis and Chantal were our hosts, and Patrick and Babette and Babette's son Olivier were there to join us. Regis and Chantal run a small 6-bedroom inn, which they spent 2 years fixing ... read more

I had never heard of John Ruskin until today, and I’m convinced that was a huge oversight in my literary education. I loved what we read of his writing, and his life was equally amazing. We took a coach from Grasmere over to Conniston, where Ruskin spent the last 30 years or so of his life. We met with Mike Humphries, the curator of the Ruskin Museum and coincidentally also the president of the branch where we’ll be going to church on Sunday. He gave us an interesting lecture on Ruskin’s life—Ruskin started out as an artist and an art critic, with a firm dedication to social welfare and religion. After gaining fame for his philosophy, Ruskin became a great advocate of socialism, imagining most of the systems that are in place today in Britain, ... read more

After breakfast with Cecilia, and eventually several others, I went back to Santa Maria degli Angeli and enjoyed the vaulted silence. James and Elizabeth happened to be there. We met up again an hour later to check out of the hotel. At the train station we waited about ten minutes for the track number to appear on one of those European mechanical boards, which are probably computerized behind the scenes. On the track we waited a few more minutes for the train. Magically we had waited in exactly the spot where our car came to rest. Our seats were reserved, and no one else was in our compartment. This was a modern, moderate, comfortable train (not the super train). On the way to Grosseto, the junction for Siena, we passed by the Vatican (recognizable by St. ... read more

Our ultimate Christmas destination was Rockbourne. There we would share the holidays with Edward’s two daughters and four grand daughters, two of which he had never met not to mention his former wife, Annabelle and her new husband Graham. Leaving Alton we couldn't pass up New Forest. Lucky for us, Edward knows his way around this area very well, as he used to live nearby in New Milton. We have been to New Forest before, but I wanted Elliott to see the wild ponies and donkeys wandering across the main road and around the little village of Burley where they have the right-of-way. The people who live in this area actually have to gate off their property and install cattle grids over the driveway entrance. New Forest, now a National Park, was created in 1072 ... read more

So, We got up at a decent hour, checked out of the Souvenir Hotel and headed via train to the last of the five Cinque Terre towns, Riomaggiore. We had heard from on of our friends who had gone there over Spring Break that there was a cheap hostel there, so we wanted to check it out. We were on the train at 11:30. Well by about 12:00 we had decided we liked where we were staying in Monterosso better than the hostel and the town of Riomaggiore. So, we began hiking back to Monterosso. The hike was about 6 hours of gorgeous sites and towns. We went through all four of the other towns and hiked on a path that wound it's way through the mountains along the coast. It was long, but very ... read more

Buon Giorno! If there is any one place in Europe that I could spend the rest of my life living in (besides Granada of course!) it would be located somewhere along the tranquil western coast of Italy. Carla and I made a 5-day trip to Italy, but instead of our typical "gung-ho-run-around-and-see-everything-we-possibly-can-until-we-are-dead" style of traveling, we both agreed that this one was going to be different. We wanted to be washed up on the Mediterranean shore ina quiet location in what could actually be classified as a "vacation". We really just wanted some R & R away from the city, so we took some excellent advice from Rick Steves (courtesy of WSU Cable 8) and booked a trip to the Cinque Terre. I knew that this was going to be a fantastic trip from the ... read more
