So, We got up at a decent hour, checked out of the Souvenir Hotel and headed via train to the last of the five Cinque Terre towns, Riomaggiore. We had heard from on of our friends who had gone there over Spring Break that there was a cheap hostel there, so we wanted to check it out. We were on the train at 11:30. Well by about 12:00 we had decided we liked where we were staying in Monterosso better than the hostel and the town of Riomaggiore. So, we began hiking back to Monterosso. The hike was about 6 hours of gorgeous sites and towns. We went through all four of the other towns and hiked on a path that wound it's way through the mountains along the coast. It was long, but very ... read more

Buon Giorno! If there is any one place in Europe that I could spend the rest of my life living in (besides Granada of course!) it would be located somewhere along the tranquil western coast of Italy. Carla and I made a 5-day trip to Italy, but instead of our typical "gung-ho-run-around-and-see-everything-we-possibly-can-until-we-are-dead" style of traveling, we both agreed that this one was going to be different. We wanted to be washed up on the Mediterranean shore ina quiet location in what could actually be classified as a "vacation". We really just wanted some R & R away from the city, so we took some excellent advice from Rick Steves (courtesy of WSU Cable 8) and booked a trip to the Cinque Terre. I knew that this was going to be a fantastic trip from the ... read more

So, Day four was Sunday. So, Laura and I got up and went to church. I'v now officially gone to church in four different countries! And only in two of them did I understand the service! lol One good thing about Catholic churches, they all follow the same basic pattern, so you can understand what's going on without necessarily understanding the words. After church we hit the beach again. And that was pretty much our day. I went for a short hike around 7-9pm, but didn't go far because I didn't want to be out on the trails after dark. Other than that Laura and I bought little bottles of "Cinque Terre" liquor (which we poured down the sink) to use the bottles for collecting sand. We had sandwiches for dinner, gelato for dessert, and ... read more

Friday April 27, 2007 - Jacqueline, Monica, Meggie, and I flew from Vienna to Zurich, Switzerland on Friday. We were immediately greeted by friendly people, even at the customs check in. We had a 10 minute conversation with the lady that checked our passports at the airport. She didn’t really care that people were in line. She wanted to know where we were going and wanted to tell us her favorite parts of Switzerland. It was great! Then we took a train to the main train station in Zurich. There was a sand volleyball tournament going on inside of the train station. We sat and watched for awhile and then met up with another friend from our program. Monica went with him to a town 20 minutes south of Zurich. Meggie, Jacqueline, and I stayed ... read more

Saturday April 28, 2007 - Meggie, Jacqueline, Tom, Ross, and I left Zurich together around 6pm. We headed for Interlaken. I hadn’t heard much about Interlaken before we got there, but Jacqueline insisted that it was the “Adventure capital of the world”. So we went, and even the train ride there was amazing. The mountains were incredible and the sunset over the lake was even better. We checked out a couple hostels and decided on the one that was a little more pricy because we would all share one room together instead of sharing one with 5 other people. Even though it’s Switzerland, security of our stuff is still a priority. Jacqueline, Meggie, and I went on a run along the river later that night and then we all tried to find a place to ... read more

Wednesday May 2, 2007 - I arrived in Zermatt at 8:30pm Tuesday night. I made it to my hostel just in time to check in. The guy at the desk was typing up a note for me as I walked in the door, so that was lucky. It was soooo good to be back in Zermatt. It was the one place that I knew I absolutely had to get back to while I was in Europe. I loved it so much before and there was still so much there that I hadn’t done or seen. It has been almost 6 years since I was there last, and not a whole lot has changed and I loved it. Once I arrived I just got cleaned up and went to bed pretty early because I wanted to ... read more

Sunday April 8, 2007 - We left Nice at 5am to head for Barcelona. We finally got there at about 6pm. We immediately went to find our hostel. Well…we found out that you get what you pay for. We made a reservation for 2 nights in a hostel that costs 12 euro a night. We quickly realized that no one spoke English at this hostel. We were put in a 20 person room with only 2 bathrooms (only one of which was working). Bathroom is somewhat of a loose term when describing what this was. It was a shower stall about 2.5ft by 2.5ft and a toilet. This was all covered up by one big, mostly transparent curtain. It gets a little better… They over booked the hostel so they did not have any sheets ... read more

Thursday April 12, 2007 - We got into Granada about 9am after a 12 hour overnight train from Barcelona. That was one of the worst train rides I have had because we were in regular seating and had to sit up straight the entire time and the chairs did not lean back or anything. It was hard to get any sleep on that train, but it saved us some money so we didn’t have to get a hostel for the night. We found our hostel pretty easily and walked around for a little bit before we went to meet two of our friend from Drake, Libby and Lauren. They are studying in Granada for the semester and we wanted to see where they are living in Spain. They each live with a separate seniora. Their ... read more

I went and saw another doctor about my leg today. The good news is that my ankle isn't fractured...the bad news is that I do have torn ligaments. I guess if it's not one thing it's another, oh well. :) Can't wait to see you all in a few weeks time!... read more
