Untitled 1st May, 5am. I arrived at Heathrow with an hour to go before the flight to Caracas via Milano. This means I was late, and the Alitalia ladies were very inflexible about letting latecomers on the flight. I hung around for an hour. Then I missed the flight. I slept in the airport until 9am when the travel office opened. I called them, explained the situation and my ticket was changed to this morning, 6am. But I'm still in London. I also missed the flight this morning. The reason this time: I left my bag in the luggage deposit place. It doesn't open until 5.30am (actuay it didn't open until nearly 6am). So I couldn't check in although I was sort of on time. Now I fly on Tuesday 8th May at 6am. The STA ... read more

I am very fond of Windmills. Those quaint relics and remenents of bygone civilization have always held my mind in sway. My very first encounter with European windmills was in 2002 when I noticed in our Internet photo club "www.usefilm.com" a member from Holland Mr.Teunis Haveman, started to post beautiful images of windmills. He has collected so many to make a large portfolio dedicated to windmills http://www.usefilm.com/photographer.asp?P=2&ID=17434&PF=4676 . I was drawn into it out of curiosity and by their sumptuous beauty. So I wrote to Tuenis if I could visit his country side to see all those magnificent relics of the past being fervently preserved by the 'Molen' volunteers. Teunis was pleased to play my host and so I packed my bag and off I went to Gronegan, northern most province of Netherlands next to ... read more

It's been a while since we've written, much has happened. Stonehenge, a night out in the town of Andover, Salisbury Cathedral, and a day trip to London, followed by an early twenty-first birthday party for Jo, with her dad's side of the family. Our first day in Andover, Bob and elaine took us to Stonehenge where we took many a photo. It's kinda boring, just a lot of big rocks in somewhat of a circle, with a whole lot of legends and myths. What surprised me (sarah) was that immediately beside the fenced in and gated stonehenge were pastures with sheep grazing. I thought if they were trying to preserve this supposed sacred site, why let sheep shit next to it? The most fun we have had was going out to the bars and "Life" ... read more

Rise and shine… we both woke up early at 7:45 am. It was a beautiful morning and we took our time to get ready. Both of us enjoyed a nice warm shower in our cute little bathroom. By 9:45 we were out the doors looking for a new adventure in the city of Athens. I brought my camera and enjoyed the serenity of the warm spring morning down the streets. The sounds of many birds were chirping and you could hear church bells and choirs in the background. A very peaceful and glorious morning. After a little exploration and finally finding a map, we were able to see where we were going. Our trek led us to the flea market. Although it was interesting at first, it became repetitive and irritating after awhile as both ... read more

On our first cloudless day for some time, we continued our journey south, but before we left we visited the Convento de Christo in Tamar. The convent was the headquarters of the Knights Templar and contains and elaborately carved and decorated temple known as the Charola and several impressive cloisters. Our next stop was at Óbidos a small attractive town enclosed in a perfect defensive wall. As we arrived on a Sunday there were many tourists visiting, but we were able to avoid the crowds by a walk around the full perimeter of the wall which was quite hair-raising at times as there was no handrail on the narrow path. We stayed the night at Peniche, a fishing port east of Óbidos. ... read more

It was a good thing we had a huge dinner because today was Fast Sunday, and boy was it a long day. We were checking out of our hostel in Grasmere, but we wouldn’t be able to get to the Preston Temple accommodations until 9 pm that night, so we spent to whole day in church or outside. We went to church at a little branch in Kendal. Their meetings were held in the town hall, and it was an awesome experience. Our group of 28 people doubled the size of the meeting, and I really liked hearing the gospel in a British accent. They picked a lot of hymns that I had never heard of, further confirming my theory that the most sung hymns vary a lot by region. I really also liked the ... read more

Weather Report Fine and sunny at dawn - overcast by 9am Occasional sunny periods from mid-afternoon. Although ready to depart at 7am the sky was unpromising so ….. anyway by 8.30 with some suggestion of the sun coming through I decided to set-off. In case you are wondering, then yes sunlight is rather critical for this project. Villages, churches and other attractions look rather uninteresting in a dull light. I do not need complete blue sky and indeed prefer a backdrop of the classic ‘fluffy white clouds’ (cumulus to the uninitiated). Past few days have been mostly stratocumulus - not a lot of use. Made for Devils Ditch which is similar to Fleam Dyke seen yesterday although more recent as it probably dates from the seventh century. It would have been built by one tribe ... read more

I started writing this blog in Prague, but am finishing it weeks later in Stuttgart. So the contents have been edited to fit the time of posting. I arrived in Prague Thursday morning, April 19th (I think), after taking an overnight train from Frankfurt. I’m not totally sure that I arrived that Thursday, but at the time I thought it was a Wednesday and looking back Thursday makes more sense. This time my overnight train experience was much better because most of the time I had the whole cabin to myself and was able to spread across the chairs and put my feet up. Although, I did keep waking up with various limbs asleep because of the contorted positions necessary to get comfortable. I decided to stay at the Boathouse Hostel outside of the city because ... read more

Ah Aberdeen, the granite city. I spent a good three days wandering around this pretty city, admiring the old granite buildings and nice parks. Tons of cool looking churches were everywhere, and a lot of the stores I passed had interesting names like “The Snuggery”, or “The Cheeky Monkey”. I pretty much saw everything a tourist could see in this city with exception to most of old Aberdeen and the university district. Seeing places like Castlegate and the Mercat Cross make me realize how young Canada is. Taking a stroll throughout downtown on streets like Union make me wish I lived closer to a city as well. Everything is made of granite it seems, and I was lucky to have two good days of bright sunshine to make everything gleam. One day of rain turned ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236This afternoon I headed down to the Tower of London for a view of Tower Bridge going down. When I arrived the bridge was up and a few minutes later a yacht came through and then the bridge went down. In less than a minute the bridge was down and traffic driving over it again. Was a bit of a disappointment, I was expecting it to take longer to close and to see a more impressive boat come through. Oh well, now it was time to hit Oxford St!... read more
