Day 12: Wed, May 9th First thing this morning we walked over to see the Cathedral. It was raining and gloomy pretty much all today. When we got to the Cathedral we joined a tour that was just starting. It was a really good tour, the guide was very efficient in explaining the building process and history. It ended in the Chapter house where the Magna Carta is located. It was so cool to see, very old, with tiny writing. This Cathedral is a very impressive structure. The whole thing was finished in less than forty years. So, it’s all in one style, very uniform looking. And it has the highest Spire of any Cathedral in Britain. We then headed back in Market Square. I thought there would be a farmers market, since it was Wednesday, ... read more

After a funny little 12 hour interlude in Frankfurt airport where we enjoyed our first meal in Germany of luncheon sausage and cheese slices bathed in extra mayo we landed in Berlin. A very very cool city. We stayed at "John and David's Cozy Little Backbacker Hostel". The young man who checked us in was an indication that things were going to be a little different in the continent of Europe. Asia - or at least where we've been in it - is in many ways extremely conservative. After 4 months we had almost forgotten what alternative culture looked like, but Steve in Berlin was an excellent reminder: platinum blond mohawk, perfect uber punk outfit and he thought New Zealand was part of Europe... alright! As soon as we arrived we discovered Berlin is absolutely filled ... read more

On our second complete day in Dublin, there weren't a lot of big-time "sights" to be seen... but in short, what we DID see encapsulated the best and worst of Dublin tourism. First, we stopped at the famed "Georgian house" (No. 29 Fitzwilliam). Georgian homes were built up in the 18th and 19th century by the English inhabitants. They've very British. They're also known for their colorful doors -- while the exteriors are classic brick, the doors might be bright red, yellow, blue... whatever color they choose, as long as it doesn't match the neighbors. The houses themselves weren't very wide, since they couldn't get much property... but they built upward, so they're usually four or five stories of house with a larger basement area. Anyway, in the Georgian House, you get a tour of the ... read more

Bog everyone (thats pronounced Baug although nobody actually says hello in Croatia they just wait for you to buy something so it was really hard to learn the pronounciation. In fact the Croatian are always eager to speak English and so I've found it hard to speak or learn much Croatian but i have been trying and always at the least say thanks in Croatian - Hvala). I had a look at my last blog and because I was in a hurry when i wrote it the time that i spent in Split was really rushed so I've extended that section if anybody can be bothered re-reading it. I've already responded to some e-mails however internet access is quite expensive here so responses will probably be slow coming. However i haven't forgotten about anyone i need ... read more

Guten Morgen! So we thought we would just write a quick note on here to let you know we arrived safely in Germany and are settling in quite nicely. We drunk Litre beers last night for about 3.15 Euros...dirt cheap and wonderful...we had 2 each...yes I (Jo) was a little shmammered (thanks to Kate U for the word) and that was the day before my birthday...:S. Today is my 21st so we will be celebrating tonight with a meal and maybe some more drinks before the program starts tomorrow. We have a few pictures to put up but i forgot the CD that we had the pics transferred to...sorry little tired at the moment. I know this is short and sweet but will write something again later! Toodles! Jo and Sarah (she's in the booth next ... read more

Just arrived into Manchester, felt like it took forever getting here, can't complain too much about the fligts (Swiss Air was better than Cathay Pacific though). Although tempted to crash, as its only midday I will soldier on and head into town to buy a few necessities and start looking for a job and somewhere to live. Oh and if you want to know when I've updated my blog, there should be a subscribe button somewhere which will email you when I make a new post. Bye for now P... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Zürich May 9th 2007

After only 4 hours of sleep, me and Rod left the other 4 behind and took off to Zurich. The train ride from Amsterdam to Zurich took about 8 hours and it was difficult to sleep on the train with all the starting and stopping at each station. Plus we were delayed and missed our connecting train and were late to meet Pascal. Once we got to the train station we could not find him and really started to get worried (since he made the hotel reservations for us, and we really didnt know where the hotel was). After walking around and finding a pay phone we managed to find each other and go to the hotel. Its actually pretty nice. But having a room to yourself after sharing a room with 14 loud annoying people ... read more

Europe » Greece » Ionian Islands » Corfu May 9th 2007

-more like it destroyed us. Now where was I? The four of us parted ways as Steve, Sas and I planned our Greek Island adventures, with Steve heading towards the Cyclades in the Aegean and Sas and myself heading for Corfu in the Pleiades which was on the way to Italy. Our decision saved me from a night camping on the beach near the port in Athens, but as far as I know, Steve still did it on his own. We packed up, ate a tasty spaghetti dinner which Seb cooked up, picked up our giant backpacks and headed towards the Athens metro - without any Greek translators this time. We had to make our way to the Hostel Aphrodite to meet the Pink Palace Express bus which would bring us across the country and directly ... read more
