This morning I lay around until breakfast at 9:00 with Jim and Mary and Dave and Betty from my Rome tour. Then we all walked into town. The Duomois so extraordinary as to be indescribable. It is on the highest point of the hill of Siena, of course, and is itself tall and elegant, made of white marble with a tower striped horizontally black and white. The façade soars over a relatively small plaza. The shape of the front is a triangle on top of a square and the length of the cathedral recedes away from the plaza. Another set of unfinished arched building elements extend at right angles. When the plague hit Siena, the economy and population collapsed and the money ran out. I am hoping to visit the Duomo and the museum later in ... read more

Isques On Tuesday, we drove from Paris to Isques (a village near Boulogne sur Mer). Our GPS isn’t working as it should—it shows where we are, but doesn’t tell us where to go. When we try to program an address it tells us that there are no roads in that area; then it tells us what road we’re on, the road coming up, etc. It’s helpful but not what we hoped for. The cousin of the landlord looks after this place for him, and she told us everything about it. She kept me busy while Kevin unpacked everything—not a bad deal. There’s a picture of our living room (#1), a picture of our backyard (#2) and a picture of our rental car and the house. (#3). I asked Isabelle how old the house was, and ... read more

Hey everyone! I arrived in Athens on May 3rd 2007, Sas, Seb and Steve picked me up at the airport where I was ever so hopeful they would remember to come pick me up. They did! It was so great to see them, and have them carry my luggage as well as I was exhausted from the 7hr flight across the ocean, then my morning (1am-5am) sitting at Schipol Amsterdam Airport, and the next 3 hrs on the plane to Athens. Drinking? No thank you. Feeling a little knackered? yesssssssss!!! We went on the train, got threatened with a little fine by the train conductor because the boys like taking risks and chose to not buy tickets for their way back to Athens. They sweet-talked their way out of the fine, and were let off entirely ... read more

Friday morning we met our Busabout tour and began the 5 hour journey to Bruges in Belgium. Our guide on the bus was really cool and made the trip go by fairly quick by telling us all sorts of tidbits about what to expect from Busabout and as we headed into Belgium he gave us a brief history of the country and of Bruges. I didn't know what to expect from Bruges as I had never heard of it until we signed up with Busabout. We arrived in Bruges at 12:30 and after a lengthy check in (there was 70 of us that got dropped off) we headed into the town to wander about for a bit. The town was super cute, made up of cobblestone street and a canal ran down through the center ... read more

It's Saturday and has been pouring rain here in Siena most of the day -- complete with thunder and lightening. Our Guide, Carrrrrlito, picked us up at our hotel this morning and drove us to Fagliori B&B in the Tuscan countryside where we had a cooking lesson by chef Guilietta. We learned how to make homemade pasta, pesto sauce, a fresh vegetable dish, pork loin, and a yummy apple dessert in her kitchen. Fact: There are apples here named MELINDA! (She is VERY excited about that.) We enjoyed our creation and ate most of it ourselves. We have to tell you about this amaaaaazing B&B that's over 800 years old. Better yet, check out our pics. If you're ever in the middle of "nowhere Tuscany", you have to look this place up. www.fagliori.it She made ... read more

Here we go again! Since my last entry I have had still more hassle as tho' the van arrived ok I have found it much harder to handle than I expected.Time to departure date got steadily nearer and I waited and waited and waited for the insurance covernote to arrive. By 3/5 it hadn't.I then rang Dolmen(dublin) and they said it had been sent but (at my suggesion )they would send an e-mail copy. Great I thought now I can complete my errands('messages') in Ballymena and pick up the tax disc. When am I going to learn!! I continued to mooch around the farm, with occasional stops to relax in the sun(20C)and herding/separating heiffers (more anon) in between checks of the computer screen! At 2.30 I had had enough and tried to contact Dolmen again - luck ... read more

Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen, … in good old England - und in meiner leicht verqueren Welt. In den Kommentaren kann gern ein Vergleich zu JD gezogen werden, ich erwähne denjenigen welchen dann auch gerne lobend, wenn mir der Pulitzer-Preis verliehen wird. Also, ran an die Buletten, wa? Nun gut, ich fahr da ... read more

Trastevere & Parco della Musica!  Europe » Italy » Rome » Trastevere By carnellesMay 5th 2007Eric 05 May 2007: Trastevere & Parco della Musica! Starting at the top of the hill seems like a good idea after almost a week of cobblestone promenades. So, we took in a great view from the Monument to Garibaldi on the Gianicolo. Very nice, even though cloudy! Down hill through small windy streets and off to the Farnesia where Raphael painted an entire room with frolicking chariots and randy Gods, The Marriage of Cupid and Psyche and the Counsel of the Gods. Apparently he was in love with the local baker’s daughter when p... read more

What do a banker, hairdresser, chef and me have in common? Sushi! We are now all certified Sushi and Sashimi Masters - what ever that may mean! Friday morning it was a 6 am start at the Billinggate Fish Market down in Canary Wharf (to which I now know was named by all the ships transporting goods from Canary Islands) I was one of two women in a great big icy shed filled with slippery slimy fish wranglers and their latest catch! I was starting to reconsider what it was I was doing there!! Meeting first with the Chief Inspector, who explained that they were practicing on laws passed in the 1700’s, he took us on a tour of ‘his’ market to learn how to choose a quality fish - to which we needed to ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Mykonos May 5th 2007

Hey all! Mykonos est tres belle! It's amazing here. Picture perfect Greece. We both agree that when you think of Greece, this is what you think of. Sorry no photos today, we forgot to bring our camera cord and we are in a little cafe lost somewhere in the streets. We might head to the beach later today, but its already 4:30 and we have had a TON of sun already. But we are going to rent a quad soon (safer than those crazy scooters) and maybe we will jet around the island to find some beaches for tomorrow. We found a nice Catholic church here for mass tomorrow night at 7:30, we can't wait! It's white and with the blue dome overlooking the Aegean. So yesterday we took the ferry to Mykonos. As soon as ... read more
