So, what can I say about Glasgow? Well, to begin with it is an absolutely beautiful city, but that kind of goes without saying for this part of the world. Sadly, by the time we got there we didn’t have much time to scout the place out before dinner and bars (not a statement tied to my alcohol consumption, it’s just that everything over here closes early as hell). There is good news to this. The reason we didn’t really have time to check the city out before the shops closed was because we spent the doing damned near everything you can imagine. For starters, we hit up Loch Ness. It is rather stunning, as one would expect, and sadly, stunning lakes, while stunning, do not leave a hell of a lot to write about. There ... read more

I am tired. This has been one of the longest days ever. I’d like to point out that a total of 2 hours of sleep have been had since my last entry yesterday. And that’s a generous figure. I just did the math: I’ve been up for 27 hours, with at least one more to go. The upside to all this consciousness is that I had a long and eventful day in Madrid. I arrived about 8:30am Madrid time and promptly met several of my U of I companions and also some from a few other states (Nebraska and Michigan.) Universidad de Deusto Staff took us to the Hotel Tryp by bus, close to the heart of Madrid. My roommate Dan and I went out into the city immeditately because he still needed to convert ... read more

We’ve been living in Greek time, staying up late and getting up late, which is very unusual for Daniel and I. However, the heat seems to necessitate it. Rachel is in heaven. This morning is all about packing anyway, so there is no rush. We tell Brian that we will leave around 10am, but somehow that turns into 11am easily. Boy, did we string things all over the place in a short amount of time. While packing, I notice that Daniel’s Australian hat that my mother bought him a year or two ago is missing. Daniel loves this hat because it lets the breeze in and protects is face and neck from the sun, not to mention that it makes Rachel happy because she laughs every time he puts it on. Today, we are heading ... read more

Day 7 (6/27) See photos from our travels today url="http://picasaweb.google.com/kosmatka/NiceFranceCoteDAzureDay2?authkey=2Y11jRZPh-I" target="_blank"here Seeing as how we stayed up until 3 in the morning watching a scary movie (in French of course), it seemed only right to sleep in until 11. When we finally finished getting ready to start our day (just slightly after 12 noon), Michael thought that it would be a good idea to ask something only a silly American would ask. “Are there any good places where we could get breakfast around here?” The Frenchman at the front counter seemed puzzled. “Breakfast?” he asked, checking to make sure he had heard right. He looked at his watch and chuckled. That’s when we decided to go for a walk in the local square to see what we could find for eats, sans a recommendation. As ... read more

So Im back in the states. I miss the UK. My last day at the flat was really bittersweet. I got up at like 11 and just laid in bed for a while, enjoying one last morning in my room. I then watched my favorite episode of Veronica Mars because I knew I would need to give season 1 back to Jonny. Eventually I got up and ready to run errands. I showered and then went around campus. I tried to pick up the movie Bobby from the Humanities building but the woman I needed wasnt there, so I then went to the Arts Center to pick up some cards for my flatmates and thank you cards for us to send to parents for letting us stay at their houses during the road trips. The cars ... read more

*still catching up on missed entries!* We caught the train from Waterloo up to Edinburgh on the 27th, and just happened to get lucky with our choice of day to travel on. The two days before we left, all trains had cancelled service up to Edinburgh due to excessive flooding (typical Scotland summer..), so the trip was a little bumpy, but at least we made it in time! All seat reservations were cancelled as the past few days had been a bit of a mess, so there were quite a few unhappy people demanding others to get out of the seat that they had reserved...etc etc... but luckily we had made it into our original seats so we escaped that bit of drama. We had to stop once and transfer trains due to a technical difficulty, ... read more

There was no way I would go to Munich without visiting the BMW showroom and museum. I apologised to Elsie beforehand as i had a feeling she would be bored (she did enjoy it a little, I think :) ) BMW - Bayerische Motoren-Werke, or Bavarian Motor Works in English. I was in heaven. I will let the pictures do the talking... We were lucky (?) enough to be in Germany during the World Cup (soccer that is)... unfortunately there wasn't a match in Munich at the time, but we managed to get to the main Olympic Stadium (conveniently not far from the BMW showroom) to watch Australia v. Italy. Yes that famous match, with the famous dive.. and the famous penalty. Big sigh. There were Italians all over the place chanting 'Italia Italia' 'Aussies go ... read more

BONJOUR!!! Tonight we went to a concert at Sainte Chapelle, which was built in 1248. It is going through a reconstruction, but we were able to sit in the upper chapel. The stained glass windows were magnificent and the music was soothing and listening to Vivaldi in such a historical and beautiful venue was breathtaking - a true Parisian experience. Classes are alright, but it is quite difficult to be inside for three hours when there is so much to explore and experience right outside the classroom. The UF Paris Research Center is located in Montparnasse, which is also where our hotel is located. The area is very bohemian and is very similar to NYC’s Greenwich Village, minus the skyscrapers and plus the Parisians. I ate a crepe for dinner and a crepe for dessert, ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London June 26th 2007

We started our class yesterday. Behavior Modification with Dr. Madsen. So far I love it. I've been trying to do something new and "cultural" everyday. Yesterday after school a few of us walked to the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. It was cold and rainy but that seems to be the norm lately...The museum was incredible. They house some pretty famous works, and of course I didn't get to see them all but it's free and is in walking distance. (-: I stuck with a mostly French theme and looked at Cezanne, Gaugin, Monet, Manet, Seurat...also some Van Gogh, Picasso...Turner. I loved every minute of it, can't wait to go back. I had to buy a jacket on my way home because I've been freezing!! I split up from my group and walked all the ... read more
