Beautiful, my GPS expired at Exeter, so had to do the final bit on my own. Had a pretty reasonable journey on the way down, especially considering I had been sent pretty close to Glastonbury! Got stuck for ages on the road not that far from the Eden Project, but eventually found my way to Penzance and down a narrow, potted track - impressive looking building! Managed to park, and made way inside to be greeted by enthusiastic Jon Laurie, our trainer for the weekend with Travellers' Tales… people were either photographers or writers, and I was looking for writing ideas! Found my room, and unpacked, nose adjusting to the rather musty smell! Went for a walk round the headland, and looked out to Sea, across to Lizard Point. In for a lovely first meal, with ... read more

Hey Everyone, I just had a good olde fashioned English Breakfast Thai style in 31degrees heat, an saw a Internet Cafe on the way back to guesthouse so I thought I better get this whole Blog thing going :) So the journey has begun an yet nearly got delayed in Switzerland of all places. We flew Swiss Airways from Dublin to Zurich on Tuesday 26th June, about 3hours of comfort aboard a very plush airline, well for backpackers anyways. We got fed about hour into flight which consisted of a swiss cheese sandwich and swiss chocolate - we decided this was the perfect oppurtunity to start our powers of bargainng an asked the airhostess for belguim chocolate an cheddar cheese - the good olde swiss humour got the better of us as she smiled, said nothing ... read more

As we left Mondello for the last time, we picked up our guide Sabrina in Palermo for one final visit to the historic center. So technically speaking, I did drive in Palermo and lived to talk about it. The blackouts were in full bloom and wildfires continued to burn. We parked the car near Teatro Massimo and walked to the Museo Archeologico only to find by way of a hastily scribbled sign that it was closed due to blackouts....the best we could figure was that the staff closed the museum after the first blackout in the morning and never returned (after the power came back on). Oh well.....time for a lemon granita. After we said our goodbyes to Sabrina we headed on to A29 towards Trapani and arrived in Segesta about 40 minutes later. Segesta, founded ... read more

Our host Peter drove us into London and dropped us off at Buckingham Palace just in time for the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. From there we had a scenic walk through St. James Park over to Trafalgar Square. We spent a long time in the National Gallery and made good use of the audio guides. Julia and Dad's favourie was Sampson and Delilah by Rubens. Mom was particularly thrilled by Rembrandt. I can hardly choose... I enjoyed the pieces by Turner very much. After the NG we walked around London, seeing Covent Gardens and Leicester Square. We finished the day with a gruelling 3 hour drive back to Chalfont St. Giles. Mary's dinner was all the more enjoyable for it. -Erica ... read more

Leaving IndiaAfter Varanasi we spent a few days in Kolkatta, and a few hours in the early Monsoon rain. Here's what our last few days in India entailed transport-wise: Two 12 hour train trips, on of which was delayed for 5 hours. A 3 hour wait at the airport in Kolkatta (but I did meet the whole national malaysian football team which was a bonus!) Then a 4 hour flight to Bangkok followed by a 19 hour (yes, 19!) wait at Bangkok airport, followed by a 12 hour flight to Zurich. We really did need our $10 showers when we arrived in Switzerland! We looked at flight deals within europe & booked ourselves on one to Crete that left a few hours later - rather spontaneous, but we definately didn't regret it. After hiring a car, ... read more

We kinda just walked around the hea around the lake for the afternoon. Canyoning started at 3pm. London Part II Thursday, June 21 This morning we had a presentation on WAGGGS and their purpose. We were then divided into two groups—half of us went to The National Gallery while the others went to Camden Market. The National Gallery was amazing. It was incredible to be standing directly in front of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. It was mind-blowing to be looking at one of the most famous painting in the world and it was so close I could stick out my hand and touch it. Monet’s Water Lilies painting was also cool. When you got close you could see all the individual brush strokes but when you backed up and admired the picture from afar you got to see the whole thing. I also enjoyed Picasso’s Child With a Dove. This one he painted ... read more

I´ve now been on Tenerife for a week and have gotten into the rhythm of the program. I can´t believe I only have 2 weeks left here, it´s going really fast! My favorite days are definitely when I´m out on the boats, the weather has gotten really nice, so I´m getting lots of sun! Yesterday I did 3 2-hour trips, we saw pilot whales on each trip. Actually, I haven´t had a trip yet where we haven´t seen them. I like people watching on the boats almost as much as I like the whale-watching. Most all the tourist here are British, they are just as bad as Americans when they travel, if not worse! I love talking to the kids on the boats, although there aren´t many yet because the schools in Europe don´t let out ... read more

Le kite, ca kiffe grave!!! Apres ma deuxieme journee de stage kite.... Oups.... I am so into French right now that I already started thinking and dreaming in French again (like if I ever stopped...). I wanted to say that the kite surfing poison is in my veines; as one of my very close friends would say.... hehe.... I already love it (too bad I have such white skin) and I know that I will definitely continue. Such an excellent complement to parachuting - when the wind is too strong to skydive, I just take my kite and go to the ocean. During our second day we all (we being a group of six with the instructor Julien) tried to use the board. Haha, what a joke. It was reallky hard, but a lot of fun ... read more
