Having made a visit to Salone, the Ruins of Roman City, we returned back to Split in the afternoon. It was a hot day and idle place to spent the afternoon was, this massive Forest Park near city central. Apparently the citizens of Split are very proud of Marjan Forest Park, and with good reason. Marjan Forest Park is a wonderful retreat for foot weary visitors. Towering pine trees shelter multiple walking trails and a pleasant escape from the sounds of the bustling city of Split. Why not have a look around and call it will be all over after Split. By any chance, I may return to Zagreb near future. ... read more

We actually had a decent nights sleep last night! We drove up to Siatista today to do some errands. First we dropped Magda off at the bank and parked the car. We met up with her at the blanket store and I picked out one for me and one for my mom. Steve got one for his bed too and he also bought a rug for his room that’s really cool. It’s kind of like bronze shag with chenille alternating rows in cream color. It’s gorgeous! We also went to the post office, bakery and to Vodaphone to buy a phone to replace the one Steve took swimming. The bakery had a vast array of exquisite confections and I was overwhelmed trying to choose. I ended up picking out some Boston Crème like things and tried ... read more

6-26-07 I got up at 6:30 so I would have plenty of time to get to the train station for my 15 € ride to Bern, Switzerland from here in Barcelona, which left at 8:45. Everything went very smoothly and I arrived at the train station with about an hour to spare. I decided to go for breakfast and as expected no egg breakfasts anywhere to be found. Consequently, I walked around looking for a grocery store. I found one and almost bought something I thought was milk but the person told me in broken English that it wasn’t. This was not a normal grocery store as they had some fresh fish and large containers of sauces, seasonings and stuff like that. They had no milk only fruit juice so I bought a couple juice boxes ... read more

Today we did the famed drive along the Amalfi Coast. I had been planning on sitting on the right side of the bus to get the best views, but by the time I got down there, everyone had already boarded. Luckily, Chris offered for me to sit next to her by the window since she's tall and can see over me. The coast is amazing... at one point we saw a swimming pool carved right out of the side of a cliff. There's a cute miniature version of the town of Praiano set into the cliff by the highway. We saw another one of these mini-towns later in the week also, I wish I could have taken a picture, but the bus was moving too fast. The traffic on the road to Amalfi is almost as ... read more

Beautiful, my GPS expired at Exeter, so had to do the final bit on my own. Had a pretty reasonable journey on the way down, especially considering I had been sent pretty close to Glastonbury! Got stuck for ages on the road not that far from the Eden Project, but eventually found my way to Penzance and down a narrow, potted track - impressive looking building! Managed to park, and made way inside to be greeted by enthusiastic Jon Laurie, our trainer for the weekend with Travellers' Tales… people were either photographers or writers, and I was looking for writing ideas! Found my room, and unpacked, nose adjusting to the rather musty smell! Went for a walk round the headland, and looked out to Sea, across to Lizard Point. In for a lovely first meal, with ... read more

Hey Everyone, I just had a good olde fashioned English Breakfast Thai style in 31degrees heat, an saw a Internet Cafe on the way back to guesthouse so I thought I better get this whole Blog thing going :) So the journey has begun an yet nearly got delayed in Switzerland of all places. We flew Swiss Airways from Dublin to Zurich on Tuesday 26th June, about 3hours of comfort aboard a very plush airline, well for backpackers anyways. We got fed about hour into flight which consisted of a swiss cheese sandwich and swiss chocolate - we decided this was the perfect oppurtunity to start our powers of bargainng an asked the airhostess for belguim chocolate an cheddar cheese - the good olde swiss humour got the better of us as she smiled, said nothing ... read more

As we left Mondello for the last time, we picked up our guide Sabrina in Palermo for one final visit to the historic center. So technically speaking, I did drive in Palermo and lived to talk about it. The blackouts were in full bloom and wildfires continued to burn. We parked the car near Teatro Massimo and walked to the Museo Archeologico only to find by way of a hastily scribbled sign that it was closed due to blackouts....the best we could figure was that the staff closed the museum after the first blackout in the morning and never returned (after the power came back on). Oh well.....time for a lemon granita. After we said our goodbyes to Sabrina we headed on to A29 towards Trapani and arrived in Segesta about 40 minutes later. Segesta, founded ... read more

Our host Peter drove us into London and dropped us off at Buckingham Palace just in time for the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. From there we had a scenic walk through St. James Park over to Trafalgar Square. We spent a long time in the National Gallery and made good use of the audio guides. Julia and Dad's favourie was Sampson and Delilah by Rubens. Mom was particularly thrilled by Rembrandt. I can hardly choose... I enjoyed the pieces by Turner very much. After the NG we walked around London, seeing Covent Gardens and Leicester Square. We finished the day with a gruelling 3 hour drive back to Chalfont St. Giles. Mary's dinner was all the more enjoyable for it. -Erica ... read more

Leaving IndiaAfter Varanasi we spent a few days in Kolkatta, and a few hours in the early Monsoon rain. Here's what our last few days in India entailed transport-wise: Two 12 hour train trips, on of which was delayed for 5 hours. A 3 hour wait at the airport in Kolkatta (but I did meet the whole national malaysian football team which was a bonus!) Then a 4 hour flight to Bangkok followed by a 19 hour (yes, 19!) wait at Bangkok airport, followed by a 12 hour flight to Zurich. We really did need our $10 showers when we arrived in Switzerland! We looked at flight deals within europe & booked ourselves on one to Crete that left a few hours later - rather spontaneous, but we definately didn't regret it. After hiring a car, ... read more
