Well, after making my way out of Rome, which turned out ot be as easy as I thought, but a much longer train ride than planned I arrived in Pisa. I was able to get in in the early afternoon so I took the rest of the day to head across town and find the tower. Pisa doesnt have all that much to offer, not that its not a nice city, just mostly the major touristy areas. After taking in what is one of the largest churches Ive ever seen, and a giant building that was a good 7 stories high and taking up probably about half a baseball field that was used soley for babtisms I took the regular pictures with the tower. Pushing it, holding it, standing in front of it (by the way ... read more

Hi everyone! I've arrived safe and sound in Dublin (though slightly air sick- it wasn't a particularly fun 24 hours of flying!) and have had a brilliant first week and a half! For starters, our supervisor at the hospital is very keen for us to have fun and explore Dublin, so is not at all strict about how much time we spend there, which is great! We're spending plenty of time in the operating theatre, and because it's a big paediatric hospital, we've had heaps of interesting surgeries that you don't get to see in good ol' Murray Bridge. The rest of the time we've been doing heaps of sight seeing, which has included seeing the inside of every single shopping mall in Dublin except one (but we're going to the last one tomorrow afternoon); this ... read more

hello there. ok, first things first i suppose. today is bethans birthday, and she would have been 11 years old. its a well documented thing and i wont dwell on it, but suffice to say my thoughts have generally only been about that little bugger, but thats no different to any other day. so yes, despite me being fully aware that you never used the internet and that heaven still only has dial up, i love you, you little bugger you. so yes, an emotional day. gareth, danny and minor went to berchtesgaden today, and im sure they had a quality day. today being today however, i decided that i wanted to spend a day on my own, far away, and be able to be all clear headed and not have to talk to anyone. so ... read more

Apparently, Florence has a bunch of painting and sculpture. Good for Florence. With all the emphasis on preserving the treasures of the past, it's easy to forget about the best part of Florence, the consumables. It took us about three days to find I Frattelini Wine Bar. This is not like a hole in the wall, it literally is a hole in the wall, like someone took a cookie cutter and pressed it into the side of a building leaving enough space for two guys to stand behind a little bar. No tables, no wine list, no salads with miniture corn. Instead, you can try a couple of glasses of their best red for only a few euros each. We just had the staff pick out a couple and we bought a bottle of the ... read more

Today we went to the Tate Britain to see an exhibit called How We Are Photographing Britain. It was all about Photography through the years in Britain (obviously). It was absolutely incredible, I spent 2.5 hours in there and I didnt even realize it. Usually I get bored in museums but this exhibit alone held my attention and blew me away. It was crazy to see how photography has changed and improved from the beginning. After seeing the exhibit Bill, Alec, B-Town, Ellen, Meg, Mary Rose and I went through the rest of the museum (kind of in a rush). This museum is huge and we were all a bit tired. It was interesting though because there was this black line painted on the floor in the middle of the museum in some exhibit rooms ... read more

Last Sunday they sent the entire school group to Venice. In the bus on the way I realized I had left my map of Venice that came in my orientation packet in the room. Fortunately, in the seat across from me on the bus was Luca, who lives in Milan and goes to Venice frequently. I asked if he would be a tour guide and he was more than happy to show around some of the "foreigners." There were 5 of us who ended up discovering Venice together. It was very crowded, but somehow the line for palace tickets was very short when we walked by, so we immediately bought tickents and went inside. It was amazing. The palace is connected by 3 bridges to the prison just across the "street." Luca has fair skin ... read more

Ah, France. I was up at 7am and made a pot of coffee and basked in the silence and stillness of the day. It was the only peace I would have until I sat down to write this at 9:45pm. But what a day. The rest of the family got up at 8:10 and we were all dressed and out the door at 8:35. Caught the bus to the train station and a train to Brussels. All smooth sailing. We brought waffles and yogurt drink for a breakfast on the go. We were 45 minutes early to Brussels Zuid station so we sat and had a cup of coffee. We caught the 10:15 Thalys train to Paris. Boy did it go fast. It was only one hour and a half to get there. The kids ... read more

Julia wasn't feeling entirely well today, so we decided to do something that she wouldn't mind missing quite as much. This happened to be one of the places I was most excited about seeing- Oxford. We visited the Ashmolean Museum and I was very disappointed to find the floor where the pre-Raphaelite collection is kept closed for renovation. A few were still being exhibited, and with all the other fine art and antiques it was well worth going. We stopped for lunch at The Eagle and Child (meeting place of the Inklings) and enjoyed some good pub fare just outside of the Rabbit Room, where Lewis and Tolkein, among others, met every Tuesday. After this we went on a 2 hour guided tour of the colleges and university. Our guide was fantastic and I could have ... read more
