It's lovely, we are going for a fun day at the Hainich National Park.. we pack everything for the picnic, but forget the cheese, meet etc (happy we have fruits and leftovers left...) the canopy walk is amazing. the wheelchairs take the lift up, we climb the stairs. it's wide, stable, beautifully done and highly recommended. Geo: 50.4646, 11.536In the 1700s, the Wurzburg prince-bishops had enormous power and wealth. The Residenz palace was built between 1720 and 1744 by the architect Balthasar Neumann. It contains a famous grand staircase over which is the largest frescoed ceiling in the world painted by Tiepolo. It shows the 4 continents and is quite breathtaking. The next 4 imperial apartments are astonishing in their decoration over the top marble, gold stucco and mirrored walls and ceilings with more frescoes by Tiepolo. This was a building made to impress and it certainly does. Outside there are also beautiful gardens and a large fountain. The centre of town is only a short walk from the Palace and contains St Killian,s cathedral and a market square which are worth a visit. On the entrance to the very nice bridge is ... read more

So waking up early this morning I figured I would check out Buchenwald, it is only 8 Km from the ccentral station. There was an hourly bus that ran there so if you were late by 5 minutes you had to wait an extra hour. But arriving to the camp you go into the information center and they send you first to a short 30 minute movie showing hourly. It was very interesting and my school actually a few months ago had a survivor from Buchenwald come speak, he was a Polish Jew sent to multiple work camps and survived the death marches too. What surprised me about Buchenwald was how isolated it was, the Nazis chose this location because of that reason and to keep things away from the public. The camp started small but ... read more

It seemes everytime I get oriented with a city I have to leave, Dresden was fun but off from the ruins of the 3rd Reich to the start of democracy of the short lived Weimar Republic. The city is very quaint and quite fun to travel, my hostel is near the Goethe Platz and everything is right by me which is nice! I find myself getting lost in the downtown area here, though small the streets are windey and around each corner seems to be a small market square, beer garden, statuee or museum. My goal was to get acquainted to the city, see Goethes and Schillers house and watch Germany move on in the world cup. I ended up watching the world cup at a bier garden with an Irish lady who was also a ... read more

After visiting Erfurt, we made a quick stop in Weimar on the way to Dessau. Weimar was the former intellectual center of Germany, the home of many famous German writers, philosophers, etc. Dessau, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, is the home of the Bauhaus architecture style and a city that clearly exemplifies its (grubby) East German past.... read more

So, I've started a blog for my year abroad, which you probably gathered since you're reading this :D This first entry's a bit long - promise any further ones will not be anywhere near as arduous. Three weeks ago, on Saturday 27th August, Mum, Dad and I travelled to London Waterloo by train and crossed London to St Pancras station in a taxi. There was a long wait for my train to Brussels (I was going on the Eurostar!) but eventually it was time to leave. The only thing very remarkable about that journey, apart from the fact that it was the EUROSTAR, was a very nice young French chap, who was visibly wriggling next to me as I laboriously struggled to complete a basic su doku. In the end, he couldn’t contain himself and helped ... read more

A nice straightforward drive today and a lovely suprise when we entered the hotel - it was fantastic. The cheapest so far but with a swimming pool and sauna. The perfect relaxation after quite a lot of driving. The hotel was just off the motorway so easy to find in a nice rural setting and it also had bikes to hire for free so me and Sam went for a spin this evening but didn't quite make it into the town centre. Another gorgeous sunny day but at some point during the night we had a huge downpour. Feeling like we have made good progress and had a buzz when we saw signs for Berlin.... Lovely to know we will be there tomorrow and will be meeting Paul at the airport. ... read more

Rise and shine, 530am, in morning was the way the day started, however this is a good. My daughter was celebrating her 20th birthday on the cruise. What an awesome way to spend your birthday. Great memory maker. The weather in the morning was foggy, drizzle, and very cool, jacket weather. Our port was Warnemunde, Germany. Just an interesting point, about 90% of Berlin was total destroyed during WWII bombing. It is amazing how they have rebuilt after so much destruction. Today was to be a long day, leaving at 645am and arriving back at the ship at 8:00pm. After eating breakfast at 6:15am, we met for our tour at 645am and then proceeded to the port area. From there we walked about a ½ mile to board a charter train. The train was scheduled take ... read more
