December 24, 2015 Another early morning today. Everyone was up at 5:30 am, breakfast at 6:00 am and then meeting our tour at 7:00 am. We are in the famed city of Ho Chi Minh City, aka Saigon. Today’s tour is focused on visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels. These tunnels were famous during the Vietnam War. Included in this tour was a countryside visit on our 3 hour drive to the tunnels. We boarded our bus around 7:30 am and then drove through a small part of Saigon and then to the countryside. While driving, the tour guide promised we would have time to drive by some of the major sites in downtown Saigon. For the next three hours we drove through the countryside north of Saigon and our port. We passed miles and miles of ... read more

December 23, 2015 I did not write a blog for our time at sea yesterday, I decided this trip to just share our adventures of each port. Today we are visiting a country on our bucket list, Vietnam. We actually are visiting to two ports in Vietnam. Today we are visiting Nha Trang, tomorrow Ho Chi Minh City (aka Siagon). The tour that our entire family was doing today is Ponagar Cham Tower, Long Son Pagoda and Embroidery. This is a half day tour. This is the first port where all seven of us are touring together. We are very excited. Since we had an early morning tour, everyone was up at the same time, 5:30 am. We ate breakfast around 6:00 am and then meet our tour group at 6:45 am. Today was our first ... read more

Asia December 20th 2015

Sunday, December 20, 2015 Today is our first port stop. No one in our family has ever visited Brunei. There is no expectation of this country other than it will be warm and humid. Todd was up at 4:30 am, surprise. But I have a good excuse; I did not sleep well last night. But getting up early has its advantages too. Since I am teaching a class I needed to grade papers and post grades. This is what I did for 3.5 hours. We didn’t arrive at the Maura, Brunei port until 10:00 am, so it was good for everyone else to sleep in. It also allowed us to eating breakfast in the dining room. As I have mentioned in a prior blog entry, we love eating breakfast in the dining room. Our family signed ... read more

Saturday, December 19, 2015 This is our first day at sea. In usual fashion, Todd is up early, 5:50 am, everyone else was up at 7:30 am. Today is a day of celebration. First, Todd and Cindy’s 28th wedding anniversary and then we are celebrating the life of Marcy’s life by spreading her ashes at sea. This blog will be short since we are at sea and most of the first part of the day was prepping for spreading Marcy’s ashes. Cindy, the kids, Erv and I went to the international dining room this morning for breakfast. We always love the cook to order meals. We love our muffins and other breakfast selections. Today, the seas were rough. Jenny, Michael and I ended up wearing patches because it was too much. One of the staff members ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Singapore Harbour December 18th 2015

December 18, 2015 As expected, Todd is up before everyone else, however he slept in somewhat, 6:45 am. I guess I needed to catch up on my sleep from all the travel. Michael woke up briefly at 6:45 am, however he went back to bed, he got up again around 10:00 am. Cindy and Jenny were up at 8:00 am. This morning we had not major commitments other than being at the cruise ship this afternoon. Jenny and I needed to run this week. With the travel over the last few days, it was not possible. We never left the flat until 9:00 am so it was already very warm this morning. Jenny and I only made it a few miles and then had to quit. Not only was it hard to run with all the ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Sentosa Island December 17th 2015

December 17, 2015 We all slept in this morning, even Todd, the early riser. I was up at 7:45 am and the rest were up by 8:30 am. Earlier this morning when we first arrived at the flat, Michael and I visited the 24 hour grocery store to purchase breakfast items. Once everyone was up, we ate breakfast (cereal and wheat bread), were dressed and ready to set out for the day. We weren’t meeting Erv, Tim and Gayle until 11:00 am so we took advantage of this downtime to check email and stare that the water canals outside the flat. Around 10:45 am we headed down to front of the condo complex where the flat is located (ironically it is called The Caribbean) to hail a taxi. The front of the complex looks like an ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Raffles Marina December 16th 2015

December 15 – 16, 2015 Our family is excited about our new adventure, visiting Asian countries we have never been too. The trip will also be a celebration of Marcy’s life as her wish was to spread her ashes at sea while we all went on a cruise as a family. We left our home around 6:45 am to head to the airport. Since we had several of us in the car we used the HOV lane to avoid the dreaded Houston traffic. After parking at the Parking Spot, we headed to Terminal D at the Houston IAH airport. Before checking in, we waited for Erv, Tim and Gayle to arrive. Since we were on the same reservation we thought it would be better to check in together. Once the rest of our family arrived, we ... read more

North America » Mexico » Sinaloa » Mazatlan March 18th 2015

Wednesday, March 18, 2015 As always, Todd is up and earlier (5:15am) to work on his computer before everyone else. Since this is my first morning on the ship, I needed to find a location on the ship that was quiet and where is a power source. Instead of going to the Piazza, I decided to head up to the Horizon Café. There is a coffee and the buffet should be slow. I was able to locate a place to hunker down for a while. It was quite peaceful, though I could not see outside because it was still too dark. I returned to the room around 7:00 am to get everyone up early. We were going to our first port, everyone else’s second port, Mazatlán. After everyone was up, dressed, and ready to go, we ... read more

Tuesday, March 17, 2015 Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Today is the big day, we are able to finally able to board our cruise ship. The day started early for Todd. He headed to the lobby of the hotel at 5:15 am to work on miscellaneous items. Today there was no rain, rather a cool Pacific Ocean breeze blowing through the lobby area. It was so peaceful with the waves crashing on the shore and the jazz music playing in the lobby. I went to the 24 hour coffee shop to get my morning java. Everyone was up by 7:00 am this morning. We wanted to ensure that we were packed and ready to head to the ship. Today we ate breakfast the Blaze restaurant. This was the restaurant we ate the first evening for dinner. This ... read more

Monday, March 16, 2015 Todd was up bright and early, 5:15 am to work on his blog. This is our first morning at the Hyatt Ziva. I headed to the lobby (open air) to find a location where I could sit with my computer and also find a plug. Bingo, I found one in the lobby. While I was sitting in the lobby, you could hear the Pacific Ocean waves crashing against the shore and the heavy rain hitting the hotel roof and dripping below. The lobby sound system was playing Broadway classics. I don’t ever recall having such a setting while in a hotel lobby. Absolutely incredible. Next to where I set up there was a 24 hour coffee shop. I grabbed a coffee. Everyone else was up by 7:15 am. We opened the blinds ... read more
