We ate this ice cream today. And that's all we did today. Just kidding! = ) Here's a short note I wrote my mom about today: "Hey Mom! I like German church. We did a lot of singing, which I love of course. It's not the WUMC, though, and I thought about you all this morning. The service was (of course) in German. Ellie and I read the scripture (Acts 2:42-end). It made me miss Mr. Wilson's class quite a bit. We had communion this morning, and it's different too. We get in groups of 5-10 people and share the bread and a cup. And we did it in the middle of the service. After church they have coffee and cake, and this sweet little girl kept peeking at us. She kept staring at me and ... read more

This morning, we had breakfast together, as usual. I had my first soft boiled egg, and I really liked it. It reminded me of taking a fried egg sunny side up. When I looked out the window, it was 10 degrees and raining! BRRR! But I'm sure we'll be getting some warm weather coming our way soon. After breakfast, everybody cleaned up a little. After Ellie and I finished our room and the bathroom, there wasn't much else for us to do so I looked up ideas for the last two weeks we have in Germany. url=http://www.germany-tourism.co.uk/EGB/attractions_events/events.htm?foo=1&template=dztneu_e&BSUCHEN=1&SUCH_BUNDESLAND=0&SUCH_DIREKTDATUM=01.08.2009&SUCH_DIREKTDATUMBIS=18.08.2009&SUCH_ORDERBY=E_DATUM_VON&SUCH_ORDERBY2=KATEGORIE_SORTORDER&SUCH_ONLYDZT=1&SUCH_ONLYENGLISH=1&showid=131614 Inexpensive Tour in Brandenburg (IN ENGLISH! Last night I went to my second Youth meeting in Germany. Ellie and I started chilli con carne during Teenies, and we went out to play volleyball afterward. We played one game with random teams and another game girls v. guys. Before we finished the second game, we went in to check on the chilli. There were 14 people there in total, which is more than we expected. We had enough food though, so YAY! Ellie and I led a Bible study on Psalm 139:6-16. The group was a little rowdy, but Louisa did a good job translating, and we had some good conversation. We talked about what it means to be alone, how we can't be away from God, and God knows everything there is to know. Then we brought up the point that even ... read more

Leipzig is a big city in Thuringia with a population of about 500,000 people (a little bigger than Lexington). Louisa needed to take an exam at Leipzig University, so Ellie and I tagged along to see the city. Some of you may know Bach, the St. Thomas Boy's Choir, St. Nicholas's Church (where the PEACEFUL movement started to end communism). It was a really interesting city, and everything was within walking distance of the train station. I'm having a little difficulty uploading panoramas, but I'll work on that.... read more

Just a few more, I promise. We took a train to Leipzig, and I was really impressed. They were clean, and I felt relatively safe. We spent about 4 hours on trains one way, and we had a nice view the whole time. I saw a lot of the country side and a few towns on the way.... read more

Don't think I'm not keeping track of what's happened just because I haven't uploaded it! Here's a rather brief description of Tuesday and Wednesday: Tuesday we went to the Regular School ("Realschule") in the morning. We entered the school, and people were using the words "American" and "English" a lot. They were so excited they were running around and jumping up and down. Keep in mind, this is middle school age. So we went into a 7th grade classroom with 11 students. They sat in a circle with us, and we showed them pictures of our lives. They understood a lot of what we said, and we got to tell them about prom and homecoming. I pointed out Courtney as the homecoming queen her senior year of high school, and they all said she was very ... read more

May 27th 22:38 Wow. This has been a long day. I flew into Frankfurt, and I was so scared the whole time. The girl I sat beside on the plane was a University of Arizona student named Becca. She was a complete idiot, and she (who openly doesn’t speak German or understand the culture at all) is a German minor. Even though she’s flying into Germany only speaking English, she had the audacity to complain about “those Mexicans.” It took a lot on my part not to tell her what I thought of her. Besides, it was a pretty full flight so the only other place for me to sit would have been the toilet. I realized the majority of the people I flew in with were Americans, so I just followed them. Even still, it ... read more

Amber's Journal: We managed to survive the flight and arrived safely in Frankfurt at 11:30 this morning. We were originally supposed to take a taxi to the downtown Budget office to avoid airport fees but they were kind enough to let us rent from the airport without the extra fees. Apparently they only allow certain car models to be taken into the Czech Republic so we were given a free "upgrade" as well. Our "upgrade" turned out to be this totally ugly granny mini-van. It seats seven and is way bigger than what anyone else here is driving. We laughed about it all day but we were grateful to have a car, especially one that is diesel and has a GPS system. I was glad I let Preston do all the driving. He handles the stress ... read more
