On the first weekend of October I went to see my friend Christiane in Meiningen. The town is rather small and located in the centre of a triangle between Leipzig, Kassel, and Würzburg, surrounded by forests and meadows. It took me a while to get there by train, also because the journey was kind of chaotic with delays, but finally I arrived and Christiane and I had a sundowner on a roof top bar, Fronveste, a former prison. Then we went for a fantastic vegan dinner to Sächsischer Hof. In Meiningen it is not common to be a vegetarian or even a vegan, but Christiane apparently was such a great ambassador of veganism that the cook was more than happy to suggest a wonderful vegan meal to us. The next day we went to Auenland, ‘The ... read more

Ralf made the drive from Trier to Eisenach reaching speeds of up to 220 kilometers per hour which he loves to do since he is accustomed to driving on the autobahn but it still usually results in me putting my seat back, closing my eyes and trying to sleep through it all! But we reached the cute little town of Eisenach by noon to achieve the highly anticipated “Third Castle in Three Days” itinerary (well... technically fourdays but the first and third castle tours within 72 hours of each other!) For a castle loving, fairy tale dreamer Pisces girl from Minnesota, these have notably been some of the most exciting 72 hours of my life. Once again the Wartburg castle is situated on the top of a rather steep hill surrounded by woods. They obviously didn’t ... read more

Wednesday 1 July 2015 After a peaceful night and a rare hotel breakfast we packed the car and took the road to Buchenwald. What an enjoyable drive through thick forest. The road in takes several forms, cobbles, concrete and smooth hot-mix asphalt. What a contrast. The concrete had been laid by the inmates of Buchenwald and was nicknamed "Blood Road". We wondered about the cobbles. It took us back four years to a time when we drove on a Polish cobbled highway. On reaching the camp we noticed most of the buildings have long since disappeared. Standing there looking over the site we had mixed feelings. If a holiday camp had been built on the sight it would have been perfect, such were the views across the open countryside. This camp was a work camp, strange ... read more

Tuesday 30 June 2015 What a great stay in Dresden. Great hotel, great weather and great sights. What more could we want. But today we have to move on. This time we have a 2 o'clock appointment in Weimar with the sister-in-law of our daughter. Our GPS friend says we'll get there in plenty of time so we will have time for a coffee break and lunch. After a quick stop at a Netto supermarket for some fresh bread rolls and drinks we head off for another fast and furious drive. We drive at a sedate pace and our arrival time doesn't alter too much. At a McCafe near Munich we received two €1 coffee vouchers so why not use them. "Sorry sir these are not for this region". Oh well, perhaps we might need them ... read more

Well, it finally happened, and knowing that it was coming didn't make it any easier. I'll keep you in suspense, for now. I've been in Jena for 2 days now, and it's been a good break from the normal touristy thing. The main thing is I've been able to spend it with good (old) friends. They're not old, but we've known each other for a while. Erica lives here and teaches at the university while finishing her doctorate. I've spent the night on her couch for two nights, and she has been a gracious host, as always. Katie came up from Bamberg last night, and we went out to a nice East German tavern before walking around downtown at night and ending up enjoying reminiscing in Erica's office before coming back to Erica's place and laughing ... read more

I actually got going this morning and walked to the train station. If you follow my Facebook page, I had an interesting experience this morning at the Erfurt train station. I began seeing clusters of 5-10 Polizei standing around, the closer I got to the station and once inside, they were everywhere. Of course, I'd been thinking about how less than 25 years ago this was “East” Germany, and under communist rule, I was more than a bit concerned. So not having any problem asking what was going on and if I were safe, the nice officer said I would be safe for another hour or so but after that, “No.” So I asked if it were a demonstration or something and he said, “No, it's football!” Well, that makes perrrrfect sense being that it's Saturday! ... read more

Geo: 50.9737, 11.0224Thursday morning, we had a delicious breakfast offered by the hotel for €10 each. The restaurant was just around the corner from our hotel. We were all packed so we relaxed a bit before returning to the hotel to get our taxi to the Hauptbanhof. I had it planned to use public transportation whenever possible but find it almost impossible with Mom's luggage requirements on these trips. We haven't bought much but already the suitcases are on double expando and well over their original 50 lb. airline limit. The cab comes and we take the 7 minute journey to the train station where we wait for the 9:34am to Erfurt. Karen is always a "Nervous Nellie" until she gets on the train. Every train that arrives at the platform brings the same, "See if ... read more
