We arrived in Stuttgart as a stopping point on our way to visit Fritz. There didn’t seem to be a ton to do directly in the city of Stuttgart, but it had a lot of parks to walk around the next day in the surrounding area. The one thing we wanted to attempt is going to the highest point of the city (Birkenkopf). This is 511 m and is near city center. It is the highest point in the city is they took the ruins and rubble from the buildings during WWII and piled them to create the top of the hill. We had recently been talking about what cities did with all their destroyed buildings so it seemed ironic to end up in a city who had used its ruins. We had heard of others ... read more

A ... read more

All I can say is thanks Rose...Tick two of my bucket list off in one day: Driving on the No Speed Limit Auto Barn. Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Firstly the Auto Barn, not so intimidating as you would think, I topped at 150km, but what can you do in a 2.0 Diesel. Nearly at Stuttgart we passed a couple of car transporters with a range of classic cars including this super rear 23 window Kombi Camper van. Then at the end of that was the Porsche Museum, a spectacular place with all the cars you have dreamed about over the years. It was a car enthusiasts and multimedia dream. They have done it so well, see the photos for a few of my favourites, the obvious is the 356, but I have never seen a pre ... read more

I wake up in the room with Kirsten, Omi and Bea. I’m peeking above my covers making sure everyone is asleep, I bolt for the bathroom tripping over my shoes and suitcases in my way before Kirsten, Omi or Bea has a chance. This reminds me growing up in house with three sisters and two brothers. How we ever made it with so few bathrooms... I’ll never know, amazing. In less than an hour, everyone is ready and were walking toward Rudolf in the garage. Our plan is to cover as many Christmas Markets in the next two days as we possibly can. So basically, I going to list the villages, the highlights and let the pictures tell the story. We drank Gluewine, we ate brats and Pommefrits (German for French fries) which are the best, ... read more

It was one of those days when you walk out of the house at 7:30 in the morning and it is already hot. The news reported that this was going to the be hottest day of the year so far, and they were right. In addition, our destination was Stuttgart. It's geography places the downtown portion of the city firmly at the base of a large bowl, thereby negating any hope of a cooling breeze. Combined with the heat generated by the urban environment, the temps this afternoon easily climbed into the mid 90's. There were zero complaints or gripes from the kids however, and they made it a great day! Our first stop in Stuttgart was the Mercedes Benz Arena, home to Stuttgart VFB, he local soccer club, which was founded in 1893. The stadium ... read more

In 1956, a landmark was constructed in Stuttgart, Germany. At 711 feet tall, the Fernsehturm Stuttgrt, or the Stuttgart TV tower, dominates the city skyline, even though it doesn't technically sit within the downtown area, but rather on a hill adjacent to the main city footprint. It was the first of its kind and a model for others around the world. For decades it has been closed and shuttered. Just recently, it has reopened as a tourist mecca for this city. From its 504 foot high observation deck, one can see for miles around. It overlooks the city, the surrounding countryside, and on a clear day with the coin operated binoculars, one can even spot yesterday's destination, Hohenzollern Castle. We thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent views from atop this most prominent feature. It was like being at ... read more

Ok are you going to sing with me? Janice Joplin style - Oh lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz. My friends all drive porsches, I must make amends. Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends. So oh lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz. So where is Suzy today? On the german autobahns. Long straight roads, two or three lane motorways. All of them with roadworks. Miles and miles of them where the roads are being widened from two lanes to three or from three to four lanes. Trees as far as the eye can see. They are more boring than French motorways. The only break we had from them was to stop at a Rasthaus. First task find out how to get in. Us and other motorhomes were having ... read more

Since I have been back in Germany since being in England for Christmas, I have been doing quite a lot more than I did before. I go out with friends at least two or three times a week, and it's cool. However, last week was a stressful one. I had run-ins with the police, and someone ran-into me (in the literal sense), meaning I ended up at a hospital. It's a delightful little tale, so sit back and enjoy. It starts with a (not so terrible) crime, leads into a nail-biting dramatic crash, but has a pleasant to end it. I'll let you into a secret; I make it into the sequel. OK, well I have my car with me here in Germany. When I came in September, I drove down through France and into Germany; ... read more
