Dublin to Avignon Hard to believe we started in Dublin this morning and were in the South of France for lunch. It just emphasises to us poor antipodeans how isolated we are. We arrived to a lovely little room with an enclosed balcony in the old walled part of city and went down into the square for lunch. I was very excited about my salad with goat’s cheese. The traditional food of Scotland and Ireland was very nice but it occurred to me I hadn’t seen much green in two weeks. Gobbled down a whole palate of lettuce. My escort (with driving duties now over) was not that impressed. Then it hit us… OMG, have spent the first two weeks worrying about having enough cool and wet weather gear. Now! Just hit 34oC! Attempted to do ... read more

Warto jeszcze wspomnieć, że ... read more

Thursday 14 July 2016 Technical issues finally overcome! The drive south to Avignon on Sunday took us through varied and beautiful countryside (along with hundreds of others possibly travelling to Marseilles for their summer holidays!) A welcome stop at Marcy-l’Etoile for our delicious picnic lunch prepared by Madame Smith was greatly appreciated. We wandered along the path and onto the soft green grass of the parkland surrounding Domaine de Lacroix-Laval. Several family groups picnicked under shady trees, bike riders made their way through the parkland paths; a restful and refreshing time. One needs to be prepared for ‘the squat’ at public oblution blocks in France! We spied some lavender fields as we got closer to Avignon, but not the expanse we had hoped. Perhaps they are all further east. Sunflowers were in abundance, their heads turned ... read more

Not going to give food details today after last night's degustation.... Anyhow, wake up to another blue sky day, and high temperature prediction. We walk the city and papal palace today. Interesting old information that we hadn't heard before. Up stairs, down stairs, into old Rome, out of old Rome, getting the picture yet.... Finish off by going the light the book shop to get out and eventually back to reality.. Do the Pont D'Avignon (for all those Emma wiggle fans) and then back to the ship for more food. Today is special coz they have a baked leg of ham. Special....... Lunch with Rose done then Chris is off to the Pont Du Gard and I am off to the laundromat... it has to be done so I'm happy to take one for the team.. ... read more

New day, new things to see. Today we have a full day of visiting the Camargue where we will see Bulls doing what bulls do and special Camargue horses doing whatever they do. On the bus with our picnic lunch bags to an area we have just left. That is we go back past Arles to the Camargue region and the Mediterranean Sea. Hmm, how does that work you might ask, so did nearly everyone on the bus. Ahh, the joys of an organised tour. Any hoo, off we go. Get to the horses/bull farm and get ushered onto the back of trailers behind a John Deere tractor. Out into the paddocks with horse people following. Beautiful looking horses and the riders look well in control. Get to a paddock and they move the bulls into ... read more

Little bit of a sleep in today. Our first tour starts at 0900. Do food again then onto our bus to an olive farm and then to the asylum where Vincent Van Gogh spent a year just before he committed suicide. Olive farm had their own press which they then serviced all the locals as well as their trees come harvest. Interesting to see how they harvest and then press for oil. They also had a commercial kitchen where they produce jams, tapinades and other stuff. Very interesting visit. Onto St Remy to the asylum. Van Gogh spent a year here and painted over 200 paintings in that time. We saw places where he based his paintings from. Interesting to see that side of his works. Back to the ship for lunch theN free time to ... read more

We had a big day yesterday so we sleep in. Breakfast is a bread stick and some croissants delivered to our room in a basket, and we again feel very French. I'm not sure why; based on last night's experience we can't even speak enough of the language to order basic food and drinks. We decide that today we'll go to Avignon. I decide to trust my sense of direction, so we leave the GPS turned off. Within a few minutes we turn into a side road and come to a dead end, so we decide to give it a second chance. It tells us to turn left, which we do, but it then tells us to turn around because we've gone the wrong way. That hammer that Issy mentioned yesterday would have come in handy ... read more

Saturday 11 July San Sebastián Settled into our apartment and awoke on Saturday to an overcast and mild day for a change. We are here for three days so a good chance to catch our breath. We walked along the promenade at the main beach of playa la concha. Not much happening in town. Did some washing and looking forward to some relaxation time after a pretty hectic 10 days in Spain. We were also pleased it was a bit cooler. Julie not feeling great so she was resting and I decided to spend a few hours catching up on the blog. Phillip and Julie walked the town and also spent some time relaxing and reading. Quiet drink and dinner. Sunday 12 July San Sebastián The weather was fining up and Julie felt a lot better ... read more

So sorry I am so late with this post, what an intense last week and a half! I have been ridiculously busy, as I will explain in installations. First, the weekend just following my last post: What a successful Sunday! Hailey and I lazily rolled out of bed Sunday morning excited to have our daily delicious pastry only to remember that basically NOTHING is open on Sunday’s in France (it actually costs owners a fee to be open). We managed to get into the city center of Avignon running on some green tea as fuel and found a tiny little bakery with the best croissants we have had yet, which is saying something! He pulled them out of the oven while we were there and they were flakey and buttery on the outside and soft and ... read more

Got up 9 just in time for breakfast, the car is jam packed we have extra stuff as well because we brought food yesterday but we are going to have to purchase another bag just not sure how we will fit it in the car, that will give us 5 large bags and 3 carry on (plus the two camera bags) then when we get to Singapore we pick up our bag at the Whitau's and we have a nice round number of 6 bags... Yes that works it's just getting another bag to fit in the car without having to leave someone behind... We squished everything in by 11ish and headed off to Millau and the largest viaduct in the world, it took just over an hour it is quite high but you don't notice ... read more
