Back to Avignon today to collect Geoff & Chery from the TGV station. We had stayed in the area for several nights at the beginning of our bike trip but hadn’t seen some of the major sights in the old town so we were keen to revisit it. The walled city of Avignon is quite magnificent. We had a delicious lunch there then a wander around, planning to return with our visitors after we collected them to view the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) and the Pont d’Avignon. It was very tricky finding parking and by the time we arrived at the station, Geoff & Chery had exited via a different gate from the one at which we were waiting. Eventually we found each other and headed back to the old city for a ... read more

Another perfect day – clear skies and not too hot. First stop was Remoulins, one of many small pretty villages in this area, where we had a coffee and relaxed for a while before a long ride to Pont du Gard. Unfortunately, Caroline fell from her bike and hurt her left knee – this was the third time in the past few months that she has damaged this knee! She soldiered on to the World Heritage listed Pont du Gard, a spectacular aqueduct built over 2000 years ago by Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus and still in almost perfect condition. We had a nice lunch by the river Gardonne and then headed off to meet our barge at Vallabregues on the banks of the Rhone. Altogether we cycled 62 kms – a big effort especially with a ... read more

The day dawned sunny & cool for our first day of riding. We headed off as a group with our lovely German guide Claudia towards Avignon, then the vineyards and cellars of Chateauneuf-des-Papes. The grapes are fat, juicy and ready for picking next week. A cave in this hillside town (home to several Popes in the 14th century), provided us with the opportunity to taste the local wines and purchase a couple of bottles of their excellent drop. Had lunch and made the climb (on foot) to a beautiful vista of the surrounding countryside. Visited a number of towns including Roquemaure and returned to the boat, still berthed in Villeneuve, to cool drinks, a relaxing time on deck & an excellent 3 course dinner. Turned in early…45km proved to be completely exhausting…how will we cope with ... read more

A very hot and humid day dawned. We need to fill this day in with activities prior to joining our much-anticipated barge/bike trip at 6pm. We climbed to the top of Philippe Le Bel Tower built at the beginning of the 14thCentury to control access to the Avignon Bridge. It had wonderful views over the Rhone Valley. We spent some time at a smallish local food market in the town square then wandered down to a large “flea market” that turned out to be hot & fairly uninteresting. After searching unsuccessfully for a shady spot to spend some “down time”, we ended up going back to our car & turning on the air-conditioning before heading to Avignon on the other side of the River Rhone where we found some shady trees under which to have a ... read more

Set off early to collect our leased car (a new C2 Citroen) from a site beyond Barcelona Airport. All went smoothly and we took off using its excellent GPS for Villeneuve-les-Avignon in Provence, France. Our Citibank Plus debit card (free from any charges!) had worked perfectly in Singapore & Barcelona (inc an automatic tollway payment). We were pretty confident when we approached the next major toll booth (in France this time) that it would work. Not so…the card needed to be Visa with a chip. We had Mastercard with a chip (useless!) and Visa with no chip and we were 80 cents short in terms of cash. As traffic banked up behind us we were asked for our details so that a bill could be sent to us in Australia, even though we explained we wouldn’t ... read more

The last couple of days we have spent visiting tourist locations in the morning, and having a siesta and relaxing in the village at night. It is school holidays here and very busy, even arriving at 10am as things open there are heaps of people and lines and no parking. But...everything closes from 2pm to 4 for everyone to have naps - how very civilised :) Tuesday we headed out to Les Baux de Provence. This was an amazing old castle with the most beautiful little village up the hill to the castle. The village was tiny cobbled walkways with shops and cafes coming off it and at the top was the old castle. In the 1400's the Duke of Barcelona owned the castle and area and although not as good as some other castles in ... read more

Bonjour! We have made it safely to Rochefort Du Gard in southern France and it is absolutely beautiful :) Rochefort is a small village just outside of Avignon where my inlaws have a house and have retired for 6 months every year.... so we are visiting for 8 days over the school holidays. It did take us 28 hours to actually get here so i'd better mention that. But the kids were fabulous with no screaming or crying (abnormal for the little miss) and although they have had quite a few naps in the last few days to catch up with sleep they are doing really well with none of us really having jetlag. Thai airways was really good with huge meal selections so everyone had heaps of choices, and on the longer 12 hour flight ... read more

Apr 23, 2013 Avignon. Our run today would take us about 200km due south, down the scenic Rhone River valley to Avignon. The valley is many kilometers wide in places and supports a wide variety of agriculture: field crops, orchards, vineyards and livestock were evident. High speed trains travel at up to 300km/h between Paris and Marseille. The valley is framed by rising lands, some quite dramatic in places, particularly toward the south as the Italian Alps are over the eastern horizon. Cindy pointed out the Cruas nuclear power generating station on the west bank of the river, just north of the city of Montlimar. She reported that more than 75% of French electric power is nuclear, generated at 58 stations throughout the country. She mentioned in passing that the French have no idea what to ... read more

My weekend in Provence was fantastic! We visited 4 different cities in just two days, and packed in an amazing amount of site seeing. Everywhere we went was incredibly beautiful. The first day, we met up at the train station at 6:30 AM to go to Avignon, which is almost 700 km away from Paris, in the South of France. We had a beautiful sunny day (although quite chilly and windy--uncharacteristic for the South of France). We visited the Palais des Papes, which was the official residence for a few different French popes in the 14th century who chose to move away from the Vatican and into France. We also got to take a walking tour around the entire walled city, which was very interesting. We got some pretty amazing views of the famous Pont d'Avignon, ... read more

Hey everyone! Time for another instillation of this blog. This past week was a blast. If I remember correctly, last I wrote was on my main tench day just after my weekend in Biscarrosse. What fun that was. I must apologize for the last post as I posted it before saving my final changes, so it had some spelling errors. I promise you this post will have no speling errors whatsoever. So alright. Where to begin. Tuesday I had my first outing if this voyage. I took my rail pass over to Gare St John (Bordeaux train station) and had it activated. Then I hoped on one of the regional trains heading to Bergerac. For those of you that are familiar with the story of Cyrano de Bergerac, this is indeed that Bergerac. This is a ... read more
