Geo: 43.9486, 4.80597 GÜN 30, GÜNLERDEN PAZAR Avignon'a vakitlice vardık . Kampımız şehre çok yakın olunca, önce oraya gidelim dedik... Ben biraz Internet'e bağlandım ve sevgili bankacım Nalan Hanım'a durumumu anlatan bir mail yolladım.. Istanbul haberlerini aldım...memlekette neler oluyor ? biraz bilgilendim. ... read more

Geo: 43.9486, 4.80597 GÜN 29 ,GÜNLERDEN CUMARTESİ Ayşe'yi bıraktığım kahveden kaparak, yola devam ettik. Avignon yolu Rhone kıyısını takiben devam ediyor. Park y... read more

An aside on the experience of travel on the children… Thomas has quite taken to French mannerisms – his gallic shrug is a sight to behold and will doubtless get us in to trouble soon – see picture. He has also decided the Oui and Non are his stock answers to all parental requests for help… Miles, of course, retains his aloofness and prefers to keep his counsel on all things foreign… Both are sleeping well in their bunk beds in “the Major”, loving the swimming pools at every campsite we stay on, learning to play ping pong – watching the locals play Boules (and bawling when they cant play along themselves) and generally wrestling the days through… Unfortunately the mountainous roads are inducing our travel sickness tendencies, even Mummy is succumbing to it, thanks to ... read more

Today would not be spent in Marseille but rather the small neighbouring town of Avignon. I booked my train tickets last night and made sure to arrive at the Avignon Centre station. The other is on the TGV and comes in a little out of the centre of town (although much faster it is also much more expensive). On the TER (Train Express Regional) it takes about an hour and a half. Not too bad. I had been looking forward t o having some time to read on this trip (the Kobo is loaded up with tons of books) so I delved right into The Da Vinci Code. I have read it a number of times but under the circumstances of where I find myself, I was in the mood to read it again. While waiting ... read more

Thursday 21 April - Avignon. Arrived at Avignon TGV station which looks more like an airport than a train station. As the name implies, the TGV is VERY, VERY fast (Train Grande Velocite) far better than driving and less hassle than flying. After the rail delays in leaving Nice the information desk said that our hotel, Le Laverin was 5 minutes walking - BIG mistake as the airport exits pretty much straight to the freeway so we had to go back and catch a taxi. As it was the taxi took about 10 minutes to get there - certainly much more than the "2KMs from train station" quoted in the hotel book. Settled in to a nice room (also with tea & coffee making facilities!) we went exploring Avignon. Decided to try the bus but after ... read more

On our last day in Provence, we decided to slow it down after our “crazy” trip to Monaco and the French Riviera. We slept in, had a leisurely morning and caught an early afternoon train to Nimes. There we got a glimpse of a well-preserved (and still in-use) Roman stadium (similar to, but smaller than, the Roman Colosseum), did some people watching at a street cafe, and returned to Avignon in time for dinner. Afterwards, we ventured out to find some nightlife. With the university on break, not much was happening and all we could find was a laid-back French karaoke bar. Picture typical karaoke combining American pop music with a French accent. They sure do love their Lady Gaga here. For our final day in France we strolled the streets of Lyon as we awaited ... read more

A couple baguettes and a high speed train through the French countryside and we arrive in Avignon ready to tackle the seat of Provence. Our home for four days is a quaint, relaxed little hotel in the city center run by owners Paschal and the ever-energetic, bubbly and knowledgeable Sylvie. Shortly after settling into our chambre, the hospitable Sylvie introduced us to the many wonders of Avignon, and how to approach the city through the back door. While Paris was more of a blitz of monuments, avenues and world-famous structures, Avignon is more a stroll where one can enjoy the antiquities of the middle ages and the subtleties of French culture. The city once was the seat of the Avignon papacy and hotly contested antipopes. The remnants of the papal palace still remain, but as a ... read more

We left at 8.15am with the mistral still blowing. However, as it was moving with rather than against us it actually helped us move a bit faster and didn't cause too many problems – unlike its sister scirrocco a few weeks earlier! We chatted, watched Tv, listened to music, continued to transfer music to my laptop and looked out at the windswept landscape as we raced down the Rhone. Our second lock of the day was Bollene at half one – the deepest in Europe. I took the ropes to lasso this one as it was a momentous moment for us … and I hit the target first time. As we entered the lock the depth gauge on our fishfinder read 104 feet. Once secured we took only 10 minutes to drop 82 feet. There were ... read more

The wind had really gotten up by the time we'd showered and changed and were ready to hit the town. Timing climbing off the boat was an issue as it was pulling away from or pushing into the wall with every gust. We all got off in one piece and went across the road, our hair (well, mine and Becky's, Fred and Mike are both members of the shaven head/ 'combover for the 21st century' club) being whipped across our faces as we struggled against the wind. Inside the town we were sheltered somewhat by the city walls (Avignon is a fortified town) and wandered around looking for somewhere to eat and drink. We found a funky little latino bar on the corner of a square and ordered food and cocktails. It was rammed and we ... read more
