Our day started by meeting Cedric, our Viatour driver and guide for the day to Les Baux, Pont du Gard, Avignon and Chateneuf-du-Pape. Besides the four of us, two Americans and two Brits joined us in the van. The day was cooler and cloudier than we had seen so far and under threatening skies, our first stop was Les Baux. We were already here two days earlier but spent the entire 90 minutes eating lunch. Today we were determined to tour as much of this mountain fortress as possible. We climbed to the top of the town and paid our 8 Euros admission to see the fortified area with the siege engines and admire the views over the surrounding valley. Dark clouds surrounded us and the thunder and lightning was a constant companion as we walked ... read more

This morning was mild with a forecast temperature of 30°+ so Tatiana served breakfast in the garden which was lovely. After breakfast we headed over the Pont Daladier ... again ... this time to visit the Palais des Papes (the Papal Palace of Avignon) that was created during the Great Schism - a split within the Roman Catholic Church during the period 1378 to 1417. Effectively there was a true Pope in Rome and an 'antipope' who ruled from Avignon. It's much more complicated than that, but I'm going to look it up again on Google if I want to remind myself of the details. The Palace of the Popes is the biggest building ever built during the Gothic period. Built in less than 20 years, the palace stands in powerful testimony to the presence of ... read more

Being considered as hopeless romantic by many friends of mine, it’s was about time to make myself on the way to the heart of the beast Romance, namely – Provence. Once you arrive in Avignon, one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Provence, and leave the Central station behind, right in front of you start/ end the well- preserved walls build in around 13-14th centure and currently surrounding the whole town. Once you enter the town, you may have the feeling that the time in here stopped sometime in the past - cobbled streets , leading to many many labyrinths ( easy to lose, but no better way of discover the secret beauty of the town) ,the many colorful boutiques, Alfresco’s painted and flowery decorated balconies of houses , the carrousel in the old ... read more

Well changing countries is definitely difficult from a language perspective when you keep slipping between "si" and "oui" , "gracias" and "merci"! We left Barcelona on the 9:25 am TGV to Valence which took us out of the beauty of Spain and into the French countryside. It was a rainy train ride but we were still able to see chateaus and towns perched on hills. The trip to Valence was about 4 hours and when we arrived we waited for about an hour and a half until our train bound for Avignon. That trip was a mere 38 minutes and when we arrived at the Avignon TGV we quickly found out where the local train to Avignon Centre station left from. We hastily purchased our tickets and ran, as we only had 6 minutes before it ... read more

It is interesting to see and read the rivalry between Avignon and Carcassonne. It is like Sydney and Melbourne. Here they have both ancient fortresses. We are sleeping inside the old walls of Avignon in a hotel of course. Avignon has a history of five thousand years. It 's strategic position made it of interest of to all. Such as the Phoenicians, and Romans. From the 14th century it became the Christian centre of the world. The famous Avignon bridge " from the song" was build in the 13th century. Many times the bridge was destroyed and rebuild because of floods. The Rhone that flows underneath has an island that divides the river for a certain length. Original it had twenty-three arches but now it has just five left. The Palace of the Popes housed the ... read more

Today I went to Avignon which is were some of the popes lived. But there were also some popes in Rome. The Catholic church in Rome thought the pope in Rome was the real pope and the Catholic church in Avignon thought the pope in Avignon was the real pope. So they had a big fight. I also went on the Avignon bridge and heard some French people singing "Sur le pont D'Avignon" which means "On the Avignon bridge".... read more

Sadly it was time for Geoff & Chery to leave for Nice, so we were up bright & early to take them to Avignon TGV station. We had some great times over the past few days which passed all too quickly. After farewells at the station, we went back to Avignon and were lucky to find a perfect parking spot (free & unrestricted!) near the Jardins of the Palais des Papes. We enjoyed morning coffee and a walk through the gardens which had spectacular views over the Rhone and the surrounding countryside. On our way back to Nyons we stopped at another perched village, Le Barroux, which boasted a massive chateau at the top of the village. We were going to grab a sandwich and a salad but decided to have a sit-down lunch at the ... read more
