Headed north today for the next round of sight seeing. We started in Avignon. Thankfully getting there and getting parked was nowhere near as traumatic as we feared it might be. Everything we had read said that driving in Avignon was a complete nightmare. We decided to make use of one of several free car parks on the outskirts of the historical city. Apart from a slightly confusing bit when we were trying to get onto a bridge it was ok. At this point TomTom went a bit crazy and kept saying “bear right, turn right” when we actually needed to turn left. As you can imagine Tim was very calm at this point and never swore at TomTom! As we headed into the city (there is free shuttle bus but it really isn't that far ... read more

Day 7 Just thought, you don't know who's writing do you? Here's a little quiz, you have to guess each day who has written what! Last night we got to be about as rebellious as we get now we are in our dotage. In the sixties we joined the revolution and manned the barricades, now we giggle as we break hotel rules and picnic in our room! Last night was another one of incredible thunder and lightning with the concomitant floods in the carpark and garden. We walked into the nearest village and had coffee beneath plane trees in the square then walked through a tunnel up the hill behind the village - the views were stunning down to the Rhone.{ See Sue Bish- we can do tunnels and views too! Later we drove to Le ... read more

Day 6 After a hot and steamy night (weather that is,) it was still raining when we descended the old stone stairs to breakfast. To start we were the only ones partaking of the choice of delights but were then joined by folk who got up even later than us. We left 'Auntie Yvonne's' in the rain and having decided we were not yet wet enough, we stopped in St Peray to have lunch and searched for a suitable eating spot out of the downpour. On the way we stopped to try out the Croze Hermitage and after an unnecessary diversion we hit upon an up market 'cave', making suitable purchases to mark the tasting. After lunch we continued south in the search of dry weather and after passing through, slowly, both Montelimar (singing appropriate Beatles ... read more

Sue and John met me at the station and it was so good to see them again, sit out in the garden and have a glass of gin and tonic with Sue, and finally get a few swims in the pool! They looked after me so well, just when I needed a break from traveling and to get a few good nights sleep, it was perfect! We spent a lot of time around the house, sunbathing and in the pool, it was so relaxing. We had a few days out; I went to explore Avignon one day. I saw the Pont d’Avignon, which is a bit useless as it only goes half way across the river, and no one was dancing on it either. I saw the impressive Palais du Papes, with its lovely gardens ... read more

Had another interesting breakfast with Dominique as we again struggled to communicate ha. It was also complicated by the fact that Gonzalo brought a little Spanish into the conversation so we had to add another translating dictionary to the table for a grand total of 3. Said goodbye to the two of them and made my way over to the train station. I stopped at a kebab place on the way for a doner kebab. It appears I have entered the stage of my trip where kebabs and other cheap sandwich shops from these ever popular sandwicherias has begun. I think I have had 5 kebabs in 5 days as well as a few other paninis and sandwiches. Its just so easy and cheap and good for you as well. Wait, maybe not that part. I ... read more

Started my day off right with a typical French meal. Hit up the local supermarket for a baguette and a wheel of munster cheese and headed over to the park near where I would meet my host a little later on. Sat out on a bench and enjoyed my meal on a beautiful morning and enjoyed how many other people I saw either walking around with their own baguette or having a little meal similar to mine. My host, Christophe, picked me up in his car by the tourist office at noon and we drove out to his place in the suburbs. I had noticed that the weather here was a little cooler than I expected and after talking to him I found out why. The Provence is notorious for its strong winds which the locals ... read more

June 9 We woke up and left Nice early this morning and were able to walk through the main streets with almost no people. Our train made it into the Avignon TGV station around 9:30 and we made it to a central bus station from there and found our hotel about an hour later. Getting here so early is nice, because it will give us almost 2 days in Avignon. Since our room wasn’t ready yet, we left our things at the hotel and went walking around and made our first tourist stop at Palace of the Popes. Although an impressive palace from outside, there was not much to see inside, since it was plundered during the French revolution and used for barracks. It took about two hours to look around the area, and then we ... read more

Today we leave the South and return to Paris for a day and a half before we return to the US. Blogging has been light while we've been in the south because we've had so much fun relaxing and soaking up the Midi sun. Some highlights of our time in Provence include: 1) A trip to Cassis, a small fishing/beach village about 20 km east of Marseille. Cassis is known for the beautiful coves, or calanques, that mark the coast. We took a boat ride to see the inlets dug into the chalk cliffs over millions of years. In the 1980s, a diver found underwater caves in this area that bore the markings of prehistoric man! Drive time from Avignon - about 2 hours, depending on how lost you get. It's probably better to take the ... read more
