The in and out and back to Africa Safari for Bald, Blonde and Barb in 2012 Well, as I believe,---most of you know, we did have a rather challenging and in some parts, very sad trip,-- this time----it was a bit like a fireworks display, with a spectacular opening and then came a pile of, what seemed like ongoing defunct crackers---, and then some fizzing Tom Thumbs---and then eventually(by about week 4 of the planned 7)--- that really colorful, finale came through,--- you know,----the one we all wait for and go ---ohhhh, ahhh !!! Equalling in the end a really good, ----last 3 weeks !!! I think nearly all the recipients of this blog---know what happened, so on that note , we will from here on, try to keep the blog--to the travel diary , as we ... read more

When our 4x4 Isuzu with our very own canvas chateau on top, was delivered to our guest house in Pretoria and I knew then that everything we had planned, talked and dreamed about for the last few years was really now about to come to true. We were about to go camping in Africa----with the animals!! While Ian and Hennie (the owner) got immediately into the mechanics etc etc I just stood there recalling all the wonderful memories of camping around Aus (and remembering my initial thoughts of snakes and spiders)and then began to get very excited about the next and last stage of our “1st taste of Africa” trip, camping out there with elephants, giraffes and cats etc etc …….! Then suddenly I looked up at our bedroom on top and remembered why I had ... read more

Capetown  Arriving in Capetown was like arriving in another country a complete contrast to what we had seen so far.  As Rovos had pre-arranged our transport to our accomodation we were still living in a somewhat rarified existence. Our apartment for the next 4 days - Leisure Bay - was 15 minutes north right on the coast. Gee it was good to see water, clear clean Atlantic Ocean. A bowl of soup for dinner and a twelve hour sleep and then a morning walk and we were well back into reality. Grocery shopping and Emails and phoned NZ to Aunty Iz and Uncle G to see how they had faired in the Earthquake and Emailed all Relos and friends linked to Christchurch before a nice simple chicken sandwich for lunch enjoying waves and the sand from ... read more

Rovos Rail  From the Sublime to the. 'Cor Blimey' now a 1600km Train Safari following 160 year old trail forged out of the African Bushveld on - "the most luxuriour train in the world" - owner Rohan Vos. The night and morning in Pretoria we spent busily trying to make our 29ers look like Louis Vuitons and spit and polishing ourselves and the best of our gear so we didn't look like we had been backpacking for the last two months- we didn't really need to worry as we looked just as good as everyone else and occasionally better.  And as the 'Pride of Africa' departed from Rovos' Capital Park private station  we sat on our bed in our suite having our first of many glasses of Champagne (on the train) we just put our heads ... read more

Kruger Heading south and our self drive Safari-Kruger After our 4 hour Rwandan flight we taxied into Tambo International airport at Jossie in South Africa. Bought a nice big bottle of Absolut, changed some dollars for Rand and jumped the shuttle to our overnight accomodation. Caught up with Rita and Ros, two of our fellow tourers from our Morocco tour and it was really good to see familar faces. They took us on a city tour of 'Jossie' short for Johassesburg which looked a bit old and yes dark in spots, but did have some beautiful old heritage buildings and it was a great opportunity to get a locals insight into living in South Africa in 2010. We crossed the Nelson Mandella bridge to a local Portugese restaurant (ex Mozambique) - probably the best meal since ... read more

If your planning a trip to the third world of Rwanda make sure you have the 60 dollars US for your visa, but don't worry if you only have the copy of your application on your iPhone - that's no problem in Rwanda. The acceptance of the iPhone for our visa verification was just the start of many wonderful surprises about this little land locked "jewel in the crown" in the heart of Central Africa. But we were both just a little worried when Ian was still inside immigration and C was escorted to the other side to try and cash a travellers cheque! Eventually a cash ATM prevailed - we got it sorted but it made for an interesting start. The rest of the first day we just slid into afternoon siesta in our sort ... read more

Jambo, Jambo (hello) Kenya and Tanzania. Our Qatar airlines flight from Morocco to Kenya via Tripoli and Dohar- a 25th century of Los Vegas with Oil and no concern for Electricity - was a long long flight but seemingly the only route from North to East Africa. This is a very modern airline with excellent cabin service reminicent of the heyday of Singapore and Lauda air. First impressions of Nairobi was a grey dirty and dusty big city with the second biggest slum in the world after Soweto. Our tourist hotel was surrounded with security and we were advised not to walk down into the city. Kidnapping, shootings and robbery are seemingly quite common and especially targetted at tourists. But after 24 hrs in the air we were quite happy to rest and not explore before ... read more

"Here is looking at you kid!" Mahabah- Moroccan for hello, A late departure with Webjet from Madrid to Morocco gave us time to make our switch from our Spanish dictionary to a small dictionary of Moroccan, and the flight over treated us to a beautiful blue clear sky day, so we were able to see how narrow the Gibraltar strait was between Europe and Africa and could see all the boat movements in the busy passage. Mid afternoon we arrived in Casablanca. The cultural change was so evident the European fashions had suddenly been replaced with anything between traditional Burkas to bright and colourful kaftans - it even smelled different. Once through customs we spotted Canadian Judy with a "Insight " tour tag on her bag. She like us had missed the tour pickup due to ... read more
