Note: All the events in this entry occurred back in April 8, 2007. For more updated entries or trips, please refer back to this blog at a later date. An updated entry or trip will NOT include a note like this. Thanks and enjoy! Since my move from Dijon to Aix-en-Provence (please refer to my blog entry entitled "The Move to Aix-en-Provence" for more information) my travel within France became infrequent, however my life was very different (for more information, please refer to my blog entries entitled "A Day in My Life" and "A Typical Day in My Life While in Aix-en-Provence"in order to see more specific details). There were several reasons why this happened. First, I now had my carte de sejour or residency card, so I was more interested in travel outside of France, ... read more

Our last day in St. Remy, Matt and I went back to Joel Durand Chocolaterie. The chocolate man himself was there in the shop, and gave us each a sample of a couple of his famed seasonal chocolates. Vinegar with honey truffle covered in dark chocolate, and dark chocolate with cinnamon. We bought some of his letter chocolates that spelled "Matt Robyn," and said our goodbye. Next, Matt and I visited the must-see still-functioning asylum where Van Gough stayed. It was very interesting and a little creepy, walking through his actual room, and looking out the barred window to the wilting crops in the backyard. Psychiatry has taken off since his time, and doctors back in the day used to treat their patients with shock-therapy, throwing them in a bathtub filled with cold water and covering ... read more

From the moment you depart the old train station in Avignon and enter the fortified walls, the town feels like a petite Paris. The pedestrian friendly (and car un-friendly) streets are fun to stroll, full of shops and cafes. In fact, the main avenue leading from the train station to the Palace of the Popes was widened and modeled after the Champs Elysees. The park atop the hill near the palace of the popes makes for stellar views of the river below. For a great time find local café Celestine. Robyn and I imbibed for hours here while our laundry tumbled dry in the nearby Laundromat. Across the square from Celestine you can get a great tart from Ginette and Marcel. We day tripped over to nearby Arles but it failed to impress us. The small ... read more

Sep 19 Avignon City Tour We have spent the day walking. There are 4 walking tours around this city – one that climbs a hill even and we did them all. It didn’t seem difficult at all because the shops were open. I walked extra steps in quite a few even tried some clothes and shoes on but prices are rather high and what looks good on all the young French girls doesn’t look quite the same as on me. But I did buy some rather unusual things – drinking straws to impress A&A because they are 70 cm long and just fit the suitcase, a fruit dispenser and drinking glass markers. I did try the usual tourist purchase of L’Occitane products but I can get it cheaper in the States. My hands are nice and ... read more

Sep 15 to 18 Enroute via TGV Never got a chance to write in Paris – too busy eating and sightseeing. Now we are flying through the French countryside on one of the super fast trains and we will be in Avignon in half an hour. Great views out the window until about 20 minutes ago when it started raining. Black and grey clouds ahead of us. Our flight from Moscow was slightly delayed and we had a very short turnaround time in Munich to catch the flight to Paris. I only started my minor panic when we were taxiing to the terminal and I realized we only had 10 minutes until boarding time and our plane was not stopping right at the terminal. We were deplaning in a large parking lot with accordion buses to ... read more

We left Les Boisset early since we had been warned about the large Market Day in Apt plus holiday makers heading both north and south making the roads very busy. As it turned out it wasn't that bad and we arrived in super-time. Figuring out the Avignon TGV station wasn't exactly intuitive. It is a brand new futuristic setup just for the TGV line. The lines have fast trains coming and going on a regular basis and it sure does beat travelling by plane with all its checkin's and delays. You can see why populated countries choose to build bullet trains or dedicated lines for fast travel. So it was goodbye to our good friends and a great week with them, and hello to several hours on trains. Because the trains were so full we had ... read more

We arrived at Carcassone late in the afternoon, and probably made a foolish decision to walk up the hill (Kansas mountain) to the fortress. It was a very long walk, involving marital snarkiness. Finally we reached the top; at least one mile and possibly two. I have wanted to visit Carcassone for a very long time. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site because there are so many intact medieval buildings inside the old walled city. Printed guides claim it is worth it to spend the night inside the old city walls because the town retains its character after all the tourists have left for the day. This is very true. We entered the main gate after the last busses were pulling out of the parking lot. The rest of the night was charming. Carcassone has ... read more

Today it was to be a trip to Avignon, another of the cities in this part of France with a great historical past. Once again we were armed with a city map showing all the carparks, both paid and free. All was uneventful on the drive, having successfully negotiated one deviation and several tempting offers to take the toll road. Once in the city we discovered the officials had taken it upon themselves to dig up many of the free carparks, perhaps in preparation for the summer tourist season. With a bit of patience we finally succeeded in nabbing a park near the famous bridge. Arriving in Avignon at lunchtime presented us with an opportunity we couldn’t turn down, a cafe lunch in the main square, Place de l’Horloge. France always seems in party mode and ... read more

Bonjour mon petit dejeuner, this is almost a year ago and happened before the last blog I published but the news of Ella’s arrival was too exciting not to write about so I’m going back in time to June 2011 and our last summer holiday. We spent two glorious weeks travelling from the South East corner of France, along the South Coast then cross-country to Bordeaux, via a couple of days in the Spanish Basque country, a brilliant time was had by all, well - definitely by Lois and I, Fiona was 5-6 months pregnant at the time and as sick as a dog to so it wasn’t the best of teckle for her if the truth be told… We set of from Montrose about 10am on a Saturday morning for a two hour drive to ... read more
