Bonjour from Avignon, It’s actually a few days now since we left Avignon. We were in Avignon for only 2 days and we packed a lot into those 2 days. Avignon was our last stop in France and we stayed in a really luxury hotel as a kind of present to ourselves. The hotel was a real treat and some of the photos show the courtyard of the hotel. We wanted to visit Avignon because it is a walled city with lots of history. Avignon was the centre of the Roman Catholic world from the late 1200’s- to the late 1300’s. 6 Popes held court in Avignon and built a Palace that indicated their wealth and power. The hotel we stayed in was inside the walled city. Avignon, at least the walled city, is recognised by ... read more

On Sunday, we left Carcassonne for Nimes. When we arrived, we set out to explore the city. Our first stop was the Roman Arena. It is a smaller version of the Colosseum in Rome, but apparently it is the most intact in Europe. The entry fee included an audioguide, which gave information at 19 stations. However, at each point, it explained the history of the arena briefly and then continued with a gladiatorial story, which went on at infinitum. It nearly drove us mad! We then went to La Tour Magna, another Roman monument that gave us great views of the city. The final stop for the afternoon was the Maison Carrée, which is an intact Roman temple, dedicated to Caesar Augustus. That evening we discovered a light and sound show, which included waterworks in time ... read more

The cruise departed from Arles while we dined last night and cruised 3 hours to Avignon. We went through one lock on this journey. The captain indicated that we would go though 15 locks on this cruise from Arles to Chalon sur Saone. Not too bad. On our previous Uniworld river cruise we went through 80+ locks, some changed the elevation of the river by 85 feet. Amazing feat. Today we decided to take the ships walking tour this a.m. because they take you inside the papal palace. Built after the papal moved from Rome in 1309 this extremely large multifaceted building included meeting and conference rooms, dining hall to serve 100+, a chapel for services, and many other rooms. 7 popes resided here before they returned to a safer Rome in the late 1300's. We ... read more

It is an absolutely beautiful day in Avignon. We enjoyed the typical european breakfast and rested some more. About 11am we took a taxi to the cIty centre of the old walled city searching for a telecom/phone store to try and buy a sim card for our iPad. We went to 4 stores and no one had one. We gave up the search and walked to the popes palace and gardens. Fantastic. The roman catholic pope resided here from 1309 to 1377 when he returned to Rome. We walked and walked and walked some more through the narrow-streets of Avignon. In the gardens of the pope we found a nice bistro near a fountain and we stopped to have lunch, formage and jambon pizza and salad with shredded carrot and corn and a glass of rose ... read more

We had a fantastic travel day. We were picked up at home by Anthony's limo at 3:00pm and went to DIA. Everything went perfectly. We were the 1st in line at the Lufthansa counter to check our bags, walked to gate A45 and waited for boarding for our long flight to Frankfurt Germany. Jim activated his old blackberry storm to use on this trip because it has a sim card that works internationally whereas his HTC thunderbolt does not. He totally forgot features of the phone because he has not used it in over a year so he had to quick call Verizon to remember how to turn it off! Too funny. Boarding began and we now always board with the special needs group. Works for Me! We were in seats 27 H&K. We really wanted ... read more

After spending two lovely days in Florac we drove to Avignon. I really wasn’t prepared for how spectacular Avignon was. We had a campsite on an isle in the Rhone directly across from the historic Avignon centre. Saturday was our first day of culture, we toured the papal palace and it really was stunning. – it was the home of the popes from 1309 to 1403 don’t you know. At night we ate diner there, and yes I did have to have a go on the big wheel just outside - lovely views even at night. After Avignon we headed towards Montpellier and stopped just outside at Clapiers.... read more

We are sadly now half way through our van trip and what's changed? Not much- We still get lost every day and everyone still thinks Michael is Dutch; however we have now had to invest in swimming caps so we can legally swim in the campsite pools. This week we have continued along the coast of Spain, back into France to the French Riviera. The Spanish coastal City of Valencia was our first stop- we managed to see some hookers on the roundabouts before we even found our campsite. We explored the old city- seeing some more pretty churches and architecture before heading to the port to check out the Americas cup village, Grand Prix race way (which was getting ready for the upcoming race) and to try some Paella. Paella was first made in Valencia ... read more

Swiss, Lake Como, Monaco, Nice, Avignon Leaving Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland was an adventure in itself as the lack of sleep and extremely windy roads did not mix well and I was most seriously queesy for most of the first 2-3 hours. I moved myself to the front of the bus to avert being sick. Our next country was Italy! Only for a couple of hours, but we srove to Lake Como to drop off a few busabouters and pick up some more. We had only 20 mins in town to have a quick look at the shoreline and grab a sneaky first gelato before getting back on the bus to head to Nice. Before we arrived in Nice qe had to pass through Monaco, which is still its own country while there is still an heir to ... read more

Well it's been a week of hit and miss, of farm country, wild white horses and flamingos, and of course the blue, blue sea. I think the last blog posting came from Nice, so we will start from there! Marseille was nothing like I pictured, though honestly that was no surprise considering in my head I was dropped off at a port steaming with the smell of fresh and rotting fish, the sour stench of sailors just back from a year voyage, and Edmund Dantes as my guide through the back streets. Ah, if only. Instead I was met with steep, narrow streets dominated by dirty brown and beige buildings. I initially critiqued the designer's choice of the latter (not a color that inspires poetic inspiration) but then I saw the city in the last rays ... read more

Provence On leaving Jujols we moved onto Provence and to a small town called Apt. On route we stopped in Carcassonne, an old fortified city. Here we continued the village tour and had a chance to see another example of a walled city after Villefranche de Conflent. This really is a town within the walls with its own castle. Once again much of the city was shut for winter but you could imagine how busy it could be. There are so many shops, restaurants and hotels and this is only the old town, the new town has even more. We did intend to stay here but time allowed for us to get to Avignon for the night. We spent a day here looking through the city, buildings and of course the bridge, Pont Avignon. It was ... read more
