Relaxing inside Hotel de L'Atelier
Set off early to collect our leased car (a new C2 Citroen) from a site beyond Barcelona Airport. All went smoothly and we took off using its excellent GPS for Villeneuve-les-Avignon in Provence, France. Our Citibank Plus debit card (free from any charges!) had worked perfectly in Singapore & Barcelona (inc an automatic tollway payment). We were pretty confident when we approached the next major toll booth (in France this time) that it would work. Not so…the card needed to be Visa with a chip. We had Mastercard with a chip (useless!) and Visa with no chip and we were 80 cents short in terms of cash. As traffic banked up behind us we were asked for our details so that a bill could be sent to us in Australia, even though we explained we wouldn’t be home for 3 months!

The charming small hotel we had booked in Avignon for the night turned out to be very charming but also very hot. It had a rattly old fan which we ended up having to turn off due to the noise. In spite of this we slept reasonably well & the breakfast provided next morning in their lovely courtyard was excellent. A superb French meal the night before at M’Elodie des Thes also made up for any problems we had with the heat.

PS Sorry for the publishing delays...we have been pretty-well "off-line" for a week!
