Another day in Slovenia. Sounds like a bit of a put down but anything but. Slovenia is beautiful. The rivers, the mountains, the villages, the towns, the people have been terrific. We’re very comfy in the hotel now, early check in, showered and feeling quite human again. It’s a half board arrangement and we have selected evening meal from soups, carpaccio of beef with homemade breads, hand made sheep curd with pumpkin and honey, ‘pork fish’ or veal ribs and salads and deserts. Not sure what pork fish is but I’m having it! The half board arrangements have provided us with home cooked offerings which have been good but pretty basic. Here local trout is a treat but we have missed it so far. Not all our accommodations have offered half board so often we are ... read more

Stage 12 but day 8. True. We commenced in Bled which is not the official start of the Juliana Trail but because it’s sort of circular it did not matter where we started except the signage is numbered although it takes a trained eye to spot such a relatively minor detail. Tomorrow we take a bus through a section of the trail that has been closed for ages for road works and track maintenance. No argument here as though today was quite easy the heat is starting to affect us. Once it gets above 30 degrees we feel it unless we are in the cool of the forest. Today had us on minor roads and through small but cute villages so it was a hot and sweaty trek. I’m stuck in the circular process of sweating ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Slovenian Littoral » Tolmin August 13th 2023

Tolmin, the only Slovenian town I can pronounce. At least I think I can. I will admit that I’m not practicing much. A tourist approached me today and asked if I spoke English! I answered ‘of course’ in my best European, she asked a few questions and I answered. I’m sure she thought my English was rather good. Short walk today but still plenty of up and plenty of down. The track designer must share that Wainwright trait of not going where you expect to go. Starting destination and finishing destination are both at lake level, literally 24 m of vertical separation yet we do ten times that in elevation! You would think a scenic route around the lake and along the river. Well you would be very wrong. Up the hills, through the forest and ... read more

Well we are close to Tolmin, so I think I have the region correct. Last night’s accomodation was a private home very much in the BnB category. Run by a husband and wife team, he searched for and picked the mushrooms, she did everything else. With little English (but enough) and lots of graciousness she managed to look after both of us. She even volunteered to drive us to the town where we thought we would have to take the train. That saved us a walk of a couple of km and it was quicker than the train - win/win for us. About 17 km distance wise with the now standard loading of almost 900m ascent/descent made for another day of really sweating it out as the temperatures have again risen. It is delightful in the ... read more

Apparently we are no longer in the Upper Carniola region. But until I stumble upon an answer as to what region we are really in that will do. I like the walk that commences and finishes with a little train trip. That‘s a little in time not little in train. In fact the locomotives here are super size. I suppose the gradient and conditions dictate that size is important here but they did the trick for us for sure. The morning train from Bohinj Bistrica was the reverse trip of yesterday’s and we got what we expected. A short trip through the tunnel that lasted 7 minutes and returned us to the destination that had taken us 6 and bit hours to walk the day before. The afternoon train we made with no time to spare ... read more

It’s déjà vu all over again. We are back at the Eco Hotel in Bohinj again. Yeh we walked but we caught the train back here. Took us almost 7 hours of slog to get there and 10 minutes via a tunnel to return! But that’s no grumble as it is pretty good here. We are about to go for a swim in what looks like a very attractive outdoor pool and I’ve just had a cold lager in the shower (well they said not to drink the water at the hotel as a result of the recent flooding). Today was officially described as a difficult day and although it was only 7 hours it was quite tough. Ascents and descents were tough and at times the track was that rock strewn obstacle course that I ... read more

You win some, you lose some. Very easy day of walking (win), big day of washing (lose). Only 4 hours or so and over some very friendly terrain makes this an easy day for walkers. Met 2 Australians (from Dunkeld) and the same 4 Swiss that were at the Sports Hotel 2 nights back. They’re greeting ’hello Melbourne’ must be for us. All very cheery because for everyone this is an easy day. Julie has found some way for the app to speak to her so navigation errors are becoming fewer and fewer (is good but not perfect) although I am constantly tricked thinking it’s someone coming from behind. Again the signage is excellent and after walking the stage you realize it could probably be done without the app. That’s almost sacrilegious saying that in this ... read more
The 4 brave men, first to climb Triglav. That’s Triglav in the far distance over the right shoulder.
Bohinj Lake, just beautiful.
I’ve been photobombed!

Wow! Bohinj is breathtakingly beautiful. It is also breathtaking getting here. Officially described as moderate the walk is tough and upon reaching the sort of final destination our hotel was a further 2km away. Probably worse mentally than physically but… The receptionist at the hotel was suitably impressed that we had walked so far and still looked human enough to allow in. She was very quick to point out that our booking included time in the wellness and spa centre. Unfortunately there no knee transplant facility here which is something that may assist. Anyway getting here. The route is well signed although the app that comes with the Juliana Trail is also super useful. Bluey and Bingo were right when they told ‘grandpa’ that ‘there’s an app for that’. The signs are on posts, pillars, pylons, ... read more
At times they are found in unusual places.
And at times shared with other walking trails.
But always welcome.

We walked, we perambulated, we strolled, we ambled, we strode out, we slogged up, we stepped in and we paced. Over gravel, pebbles, stones, mud, grass, pavement, streams, puddles, streets, roads and plenty of countryside but we are here. Not sure why that number 1 is in the blog but I can’t get rid of it. Consequently it stays as a point of interest. Plenty of those today. The shot of the beehives may be imbedded in text if I manage to write enough and that is possible because I’ve left our room and come downstairs to the most comfy chairs. I will drop a photo to sort of show you what I mean. The fact that I have a super cold draft lager to go with the chair helps as well. These numbers are ... read more
First Juliana Trail sign. We know what it means but can’t pronounce it.
Goodbye Bled. We will see you again in 16 days.

Bled, Podhom and Zasip. Roll off the tongue like London, Paris and New York don’t they? Well if you’re walking Bled to Zasip it’s about right. We are warming up with a walk to the exit of Vintgar Gorge which is accessed on the St Katherine’s Walk just out of Zasip. And the sun is out, the sky intermittently blue and the temperature is rising. Us and Bled are warming up (at last!). It was an hour and a half wait for the bus so we walked the initial 3 or 4 km to the start of the walk. Some surprises as far as hills were concerned but delightful walking through the countryside and up and up and up to the church. Then its down to the ’slap’ or falls which was well worth the trek. ... read more
