We are not at Two Bridges, I don’t even know where it is, but I saw 2 Bridges today so that near enough. We’re in Westward Ho! It’s the only place name I know that really has an exclamation mark. I’ve used them for some ‘exclamable’ places before but this one has an official one. Dined at the Wayfarer Inn in Instow last night and I had some delightful mussels. The sauce was garlic, a little browned onion, some butter and slightly thickened probably with Devon cream and it was delicious. Also had some scallops that were sweet and pretty good but the mussels were a tough act to follow. Because we were so close to the sea Julie had some nachos! The pub is full of ‘kitch’ seafaring icons but it’s not coy or fake. ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Devon » Bideford August 22nd 2022

Well really near Bideford at a small seaside village called Instow. Very comfortable in our room at the Wayfarer Inn. A pub so old it does not have to try to be ‘olde worlde’, it just is. There are enough knots and rope splices on the walls here the place could be training central for Boy Scouts. Mix that with those old bronze diving helmets, model ships complete with rigging, porthole windows and any other maritime memorabilia that seems cliche and you’ve got it except the stuff here is real. The Cindy Lauper music is not exactly in keeping but sea shanties may be a bit over the top. The stairs here are super steep, I think in an effort to counter our easy day’s walk. For the first time there was booking mixup with the ... read more

Same sort of story as usual, lots of photos (Julie takes them as her camera has better resolution) and a bit of blog in an attempt to explain what’s happening. We are back in day 2 time, so we are walking from Combe Martin to Wollocombe through Ilfracombe. Due to a very tight BnB market our walking company arranges a return taxi for us so after slogging our way over 23 km with an elevation gain of about 850 m we were driven straight back again. Out of Combe Martin the path unsurprisingly goes up and up and along and down and up and along in the usual manner. The path meanders through a plethora of holiday parks, holiday camps and even some holiday ‘paddocks’ with some pretty primitive facilities but all seemed busy. It is ... read more

Brutal day but spectacular. Some (too many) very steep and quite long ascents meant the pace was pretty slow although surprisingly in line with the guide book recommendations. There’s an instant replay tomorrow with similar distances and similar ascents so this may be my final blog (PS Jake can have my golf clubs). Thank goodness for 2 pints of cider and a fish stew. Again there will be more photos than text but there haven’t been too many grumbles about that. Thanks Francis for getting us the our start at Lynton this morning. It was important that the luggage be dropped at a BnB address prior to 9 o’clock. That done Francis was again good enough to take us to the SWCP path. Our final chance to bail out was dismissed without thought, we had chocolate ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Somerset » Simonsbath August 17th 2022

Wow, thought that Simonsbath would be too small to register but it has come up in the location finder and it also made an appearance in Facebook in their ‘places’ section. Admittedly Facebook had some ridiculous comment like ‘within city limits’ attached but I was still impressed. I have dropped a heap of photos in the blog here but you will need to access them via photos. Really they are the same as those broadcast through Facebook but there’s a little description that accompanies each here. We walked about 22 km today which sounds like the real thing but ‘false start’ we were not actually at the starting line. More precicely we we’re almost at the finishing line but doesn’t matter. We walked to Withypool and back but our return route was a little too circuitous ... read more

Been planning, been training, been undergrounding, been escalating, been lifting, been walking and really been enough. We are both ready for the last car trip into Simonsbath and it’s that not far away. Just waiting for our train and because McScrooge booked the cheaper non-transferable ticket we have actually seen a train depart that could have taken us to Taunton and to our new mum and dad. But it did give me time to Facechat Lee and because I haven’t had time to do anything wrong or misbehave in any way I’m at least temporarily in the good books. It was 28 real degrees (not those American ones, Capt Matt) here at 7 o’clock in the morning. Bizarre. The locals don’t think it will last and I’m hoping it won’t! We are prepared for rain and ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Abu Dhabi August 15th 2022

Currently enjoying the romance of travel, that esprite de corps that comes from shared experiences and that spirit of adventure as we head off as Julie, I and 500 of our closest, new friends await (in the wee hours Abu Dhabi time, the silly o’clock Aussie time and the unknown hour UK wise) for our connecting flight. The airport here is huge, there are 62 gate in this terminal alone. We however as transit passengers experience just a small section although already it has seen us go through 2 security checks and all that’s got us is into the departure lounge. I think we have only 15 minutes or so more to wait but it’s difficult to tell as there are so few clocks in the terminal. Julie’s smart phone is smart enough to know where ... read more

15th Aug 2019 Spooky! Three years to the day that Julie and I sat here waiting to depart for a big walk. That time destination UK and the walk was the Pennine Way. 15th Aug 2022 Spooky! Julie and I are sitting here waiting to depart for a big walk. This time destination UK and the walk is the South West Coast Path and the 2 Moors Way. Where does the reservoir of excitement, anticipation and eagerness go when you’re at the airport. Is there a corner somewhere that‘s overflowing wth all the emotions that travellers bring to the check in queue? Met and chatted with 3 girls off to Edinburgh for a wedding (not theirs!) whilst in the check in line but by the time security, passport control and duty free is behind us any ... read more

Ahhh English. ‘Common’ topographical terms used on the maps and in the guide books I’m using at the moment include the following: a barton, a beare or beer (and no it’s not a drink!), a bury, a cleave, a combe or to further complicate things a coombe, a cott, a dean, a down or dun, a ham, a lan, a leigh, a lyn, a mew, nose and a mouth, a pil or pill, a stoke, a ton, a tout (but only used in Dorset), a warren, a wide or wake and then there are the particularly and specifically Cornish terms of bal, bod, bos, carn (a walker’s favourite in any language or spelling), Carrick, cos, close, ty, che, Dina’s, du, shut, envy’s or ennis, gwyn, hal, hen, hayle, ken, kernow, lis or liz, loe or looe, ... read more

I’m kcab. I think due partly to a change of email address and more probably to my lack of blog skills my previous travel blogs are floating somewhere in the internet ether. They are findable and may give you some amusement although if anyone does locate them it probably means they have too much time on their hands. To anyone likely to take umbrage at my intentional double usage of the word ‘ramblings’ I give you warning there are more to come and you probably should run away now, delete any bookmarks to the site and put some some kind of block on the site. The reference to let the games begin is not meant to point towards any Hunger Games dystopian fiction and I certainly hope (for Julie’s sake) that it’s not the case. Julie, ... read more
