All good here thanks. A couple of people has asked recently if I enjoy my walks. Obviously my blogs have not been explicit enough. Yes I do enjoy my walks. I love putting my walking boots on in the morning as I leave our accomodation and I love taking them off in the afternoon after we arrive. That’s not to say there aren’t some tough sections but even in the difficult parts there’s a sense of satisfaction and a degree of accomplishment that is satisfying. Here on the Menalon Trail the terrain changes quite often, although rocky paths seem quite prevalent, so a sense of walking rhythm is difficult to achieve. The last 5 km or so (excluding last 500 m uphill) was smooth and easy walking and was probably the first time I experienced here ... read more

No we are not in Valtessiniko as it says above but really we are nowhere! More precisely we are 2 km or so from a village named Nimfasia, which we walked through and saw no-one! We heard some people but saw not a soul. You could have fired a cannon in the village square and only disturbed a cat. The church was deserted and there was no movement at the cemetery! It’s a shame because for a couple of km we have been getting glimpses of the village and it looks good. I’ll drop a couple of photos as I thought it appeared quite ‘magical’. We left Vytina in bright sunshine but with a forecast of thunderstorms. The forecast proved correct, as a couple of hours into the walk the lighting commenced, followed very closely by ... read more

We get up. We have breakfast. We walk. We arrive in a cute little village. We go out for evening meal. So far 4 out of 5 ticked off and here there are a few tavernas so the last on the list should not be too difficult. Big breakfast spread particularly considering we were the only guests. Far too much for us even taking into consideration the lunch we take. The host even supplied take away bags and still we hardly made a dint in the offerings. Then it’s on the trail. We re-walked the last 20 minutes of yesterday’s trail as the first 20 minutes of today’s. Quite frustrating but here necessary. Then it’s along the river for quite a while. Picturesque and quiet delightful really and as it is heavily forested it was cool ... read more
The other half. There are only 15 permanent residents in the village, we could have fed them all!

Not really still in Dimitsana, although the first few photos are. We are currently in Elati, a village of only about 15 people (few more on the weekend) so it’s no surprise it doesn’t feature on maps and location entries. It’s cute but after 8 hours walk the last thing we wanted was another 600 metre climb to our homestay. Sampled a boar sausage last night. To absolutely no surprise it came with chips. Julie had the kebabs and pita bread and both were OK but nothing special. The tzatziki was good though, very creamy and plenty of garlic. The beer was really cold and even served in a cold glass so 2 out of 4 ain’t bad. Later went looking for baklava and coffee but couldn’t find any. Greece is in crisis! Couple of food photos first. Our last night in Stemnista was back to the only restaurant in the town (surprise, surprise!) but not for a a whole grilled chicken-we Made that mistake last night. I’m not sure how they cut the chicken up but there must have been at least 20 portions! Some identifiable, some not so but all good. It was spanakopita and lamb cooked in lemon, served with the ubiquitous chips. Vegetables are very hard to come by here. There are virtually none on the menu except for tomatoes. Our accomodation has a great morning breakfast, most of which they were happy for us to take away. So a couple of s cheese and spinach rolls, a couple of egg and bacon bakes and a couple of sweet biscuits went with us. Still managed ... read more

Geography first. Drove over the Corinthian Canal, pretty close to Kalamata, into the Menalon Hills, close to Sparta and … Well how good is that? But we are here in Stemnista, not big enough to register a mention on the app here but big on the lovely scale. Welcomed into our new home, made to feel very welcome, feed via ‘lunch from breakfast’ program that has been instituted on an almost compulsory basis for quite a while. In Greece it works well as in addition to the cheese, meats and pretty good bread you also get some pastries such as spanakopita which travel surprisingly well and eat surprisingly well cold. Getting here was a 2 hour bus from Central Athens to Tripoli then a taxi with Mr Andrianous. The taxi drivers for the village have their ... read more

You gotta eat but this is ridiculous (almost!). It’s not long after breakfast so the legacy of a few pastries, some fruit, a good measure of yogurt and honey, a liberal supply of juice and of course some coffee have not worn off. The 3 minute walk did not exactly compensate either. But we were off on the Athens Food Tour. After some chicken and cheese, spinach and cheese, ham and cheese and of course some cheese and cheese pastries followed by some donuts with cinnamon and honey (they are seriously good but I could only eat 2 of the 3 we were offered), some Greek coffee, then helpings of beef meat balls, zucchini and carrot balls, tzatziki, stuffed capsicum, fried cheese, chicken cooked in garlic and lemon, some pork cooked in garlic and tomato, some ... read more

Looks good, is good. No it is not the punch line from some rude joke, well really it is but I’m not using it in that manner. The Acropolis and Parthenon look good and are good from any and all perspectives. We, and a few hundred of our friends, ventured up to the Acropolis and Parthenon and happily took photos of this unique historical and cultural monument. We went at a time with supposedly few others yet it was still a busy place. Using the Western Gate helps as the throng of people use the main, more easily accessed gate. It is a great place to visit, you don’t spend ages there but it is interesting at every turn. There’s a beauty is the symmetry and geometry of the buildings. I read about the golden ratios ... read more

Greet from Greece. In fact from the base of the Acropolis, near the Plaza, between the 2 main squares and near the old Roman Agora. The location is ideal for any activity in central Athens although our hotel which was terrific last year is showing signs of its age. Admittedly our room is smaller and lacks the balcony I had last year so it’s decreased in size but the prices has inversely risen. We paid more for a small bottle of sparkling water than I did for a souvlaki on the streets! And the souvlaki was good. The same bottle of water is less than one fifth the price at the supermarket 3 doors away! But… The view from the rooftop garden here is probably worth the inflated drink prices. There’s not a bad view of ... read more

Almost the last of Ljubljana. Very casual day as tomorrow we need to be up at silly o’clock in order to catch a flight to Belgrade. Not only is the flight at silly o’clock, we are taking the circuitous route! Apparently there are only 2 flights a week directly to Athens, so we fly significantly further but we fly on a date that suits us. Our hotel said the the airport here only has 10 or so flights per day so we are not expecting a JFK or Heathrow. But we will be on our way to Athens. Had a little walk, hard to believe but true.
