All good here thanks.
A couple of people has asked recently if I enjoy my walks. Obviously my blogs have not been explicit enough. Yes I do enjoy my walks. I love putting my walking boots on in the morning as I leave our accomodation and I love taking them off in the afternoon after we arrive. That’s not to say there aren’t some tough sections but even in the difficult parts there’s a sense of satisfaction and a degree of accomplishment that is satisfying. Here on the Menalon Trail the terrain changes quite often, although rocky paths seem quite prevalent, so a sense of walking rhythm is difficult to achieve. The last 5 km or so (excluding last 500 m uphill) was smooth and easy walking and was probably the first time I experienced here on this trail. But doesn’t matter. Most of the time I’m a happy walker.
Last night our host cooked for us. She sort of had to as there was no restaurant, no taverna, no cafe and no supermarket leaving really no options for us. Good Greek salad (I even like the tomatoes here!), beer and that Greek favourite ‘spaghetti’! But we were hungry
and appreciative.
It had rained overnight and more was forecast during the day so we were prepared for wet, and we got it. Most came from the shrubs and bushes but we had enough rain to make it a nuisance. Managed to dry off pretty well before arriving at our accomodation but our coats and boots need a good drying and airing.
We combined 2 days into one today so the walk was 15 km. That’s the company we walk with making that decision but that’s fine. Julie’s location app though broke it in 2 and because we went for a drink in the village we were off track. She managed to get us back on track but heading in the wrong direction. It was after about 20 minutes when I asked ‘should we be walking back on the track we came in on?’ that we realised the app had us on track but going back to where we came from. Not a big deal but an extra hour or so walking! Any other time, other than a break in the trail number, the app has been really good and very handy.
So after about 7 hours
walking we arrived and found our accommodation. Again very nice but with a spiral staircase that will just about give us a nose bleed. Julie has not yet ventured up spiral but she will have to at some stage as the beds are there. We should have the Dutch couple we met last night staying here as well. The units are large and self contained and we could even cook here (apart from the fact we have nothing left) so they may be difficult to locate. More likely we run into them in the local taverna. We will be heading there pretty soon as I‘m getting hungry.
Menalon last day tomorrow. I think the distance is only 14 km which is very comfortable and really pretty cruisey but there’s nothing wrong with that. We walk to another super cute village but one that big enough to have a couple of places to eat.
So all good here. And yes I’m having a good time. Caio for now.
