It’s done and dusted, the fat lady has sung, it’s all over…the Menalon Trail has been walked.
But that’s the end of the story not the beginning.
Shared a meal with the Dutch couple we have been seeing lately. Stayed in the same accommodation, and will do so tonight and obviously walked the same route over the last 3 days. So enough in common to share a table at a very nice taverna in Valtesiniko last night. Julie and I opted for more traditional meals (I had the lamb in lemon again as it’s a proven winner) but the Dutchies had T-bone steak and grilled port which both looked really good. Such options aren’t cheap but they did look good. Good beer and good food in a lovely setting and topped with interesting conversation made for a good time.
Breakfast was what we have become accustomed to and it does not disappoint. There are a couple of shots of the breakfast room and then use your imagination to fill the picture. Yes there were cereals, yogurt and some prepared fruit but there was cold milk which we do not always have access to. Plenty of savoury and sweet
pastries and some juice and coffee filled any gaps. The host made some ’hot bread’ for the others but all in all a good start for our final day.
Then some serious up out of the village. Because the weather was inclement there aren’t a lot of photos but believe me it was up. Then the trail settled into the terrain and vistas we have become accustomed to. About 16 km which means a mid afternoon finishing time which is ideal really. There are a few shots I took when the rain held off. Inevitably we get the glimpse of upcoming villages in the distance and I think they look lovely. Where we finished and where we stay this evening, Lagkadia appears quite delightful. Significantly larger than most towns/villages it even has buses and several tavernas that are open. Prices seem dependent on the size of the town though. We often get Schepps soft drinks and from cafes you can pay €3 yet buy them for €1 if you can find a supermarket. Here we paid €1.50. There’s an excellent choice of flavours, the lemon is very good and currently Julie is big on pomegranate.
Walked through the
village with a little guidance from a local, found the official end of the trail, took the happy snappies, had a drink, found our hotel and made ourselves comfy. So all is good. Had to drink those Schweppes can because we can’t keep them cold. There’s a great fridge in the room but it can’t be plugged in! Sits there in purpose built cabinetry but it can not be plugged in!
Double checked and confirmed tomorrow’s arrangements so yes we are really off to Crete tomorrow. Then we walk again. We walk on a trail called ‘Crete - Coast to Coast’. Obviously more when it happens.
So from the Menalon Trail, that’s all folks.
