So close to DISASTER.
Mr Silly left his iPad at the restaurant of our hotel and was happily on the way to the airport when the driver received a call. Well we turned back, the hotel host drove towards us, we met in the middle and everything was fine (apart from losing 5 minutes). But the scary thought of how close this was to a disaster will haunt me for a while. As it was we were told the drive would be 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes but it took 3 hours and the only hold up was with iPad and really that was less than 10 tops. We stopped for photos at the Corinth Canal and for driver coffee and pastries so I don’t know if he was unaware of the time schedule or what.
Our flight was scheduled for 1:05 and we arrived just before 12. Not a great start. But there were huge queues because so many flights were cancelled yesterday because of the fierce storm and then rescheduled for today. We had an hour and the queue was not an hour long but several hours long! Fortunately I heard an airline representative shout
our destination and miraculously we were whisked to the front. Good? Well no, our flight was overbooked so no seat allocation for us. We saw our luggage checked (with not a little apprehension) and we’re told if you can’t get on we will compensate you. Then there’s a change of boarding gate so we scampered to join the queue knowing without seat allocation things do not look good. Present the tickets, another Aegean rep told us the obvious but must have been swayed by our ‘puppy dog’ expression because he held up the line, printed passes for us and wished us all the best. The plane took off over an hour late but we didn’t mind because we were on it. Good? Well no. We had transport to Vamos, where we are staying, but the transport commenced 30 odd km from the airport. So a friendly taxi driver (surprising how friendly they are when there’s €50 fare) took as to Vamos. Good? Well no. The tourist office we were told to go to did not have a car and could not take us to our accommodation (as was arranged), so bags back in the taxi, a few blocks drive and
here we are. The driver was not happy and with some justification. Good. Well no. This trail is not really a trail and it looks like it is not marked with any trail signage. We have step by step instructions but it seems our faces will be buried in the iPad rather than looking for signage. Good? Well no. Breakfast is at least a km from our hotel! The hotel has a monster swimming pool and looks the part but…
Enough. You get the idea.
So I’m hoping that something to eat and something to drink will put a different complexion on things. See you soon.
