Far from Bled out. Despite having 60mm of rain in 24 hours here the place has much to offer. Listening to Geelong beat Port Adelaide probably put us in a good mood but we had planned to venture out and around the lake anyway. In the drizzle and some times more than drizzle we walked the 6km and thought we deserved the famous Bled cake. There is a before picture as there wasn’t much after. Like many regional specialities (Sacha torte!) the hype and expectations exceed the reality. For me the most impressive thing was that if all the cakes sold were stacked on top of each they would reach around the entire lake and exceed a height of 7 metres! For Julie she was impressed by the fact the place had robotic waiters! The fact ... read more

Those concerned with my dietary habits can rest assured as we have accommodation with an excellent breakfast again. Even the fruit juice is pretty good and they have pure fruit smoothies that even Owen would think are really good. They are also have excellent local yoghurts, jams and honey as well as good muesli and cereals and breads so the mornings commence well here. Then it’s up and up and along and up to the castle. Again we were not alone but it’s easy to see a bus load of tourists descend on some point of interest and we managed to work around them by walking around them and timing our viewings. The castle is quite fascinating and it concentrates on presenting historical depictions from an extended period rather than its 800 years of history. There ... read more

Who knows what region I’m in Slovenia? That’s not a quiz question but a desperate plea for help filling in the categories above. I know I’m in Bled but… The country is literally being flooded with flood warnings. Constantly my appreciation of Slovenian traditional folk music was interrupted with emergency flood warnings. Consequently I’m not the authority on the subject and may have to defer any questions on the subject to our GoOpti driver’s dad who we were told listens to nothing else. Nobody has heard of GoOpti I know and how I booked via them I’m not sure but they were excellent. Very good communication prior, punctual, comfortable and significantly cheaper than a taxi they provided just what we needed. The floods caused us some consternation as we thought roads may be blocked but our ... read more

Central Park, Zagreb. Maybe not the same aura as Central Park, New York but it’s quite lovely here. We’ve had the leisurely stroll around and are just having a break prior to picking up our bags, taking a short tram trip to the local bus station and hopefully getting our GoOpti ride to Bled. Yes we had breakfast plus so we are prepared, packed and ready to picnic. Walked through delightful fruit and veg market. Full of very local produce from very small farms, some selling just a few eggs, beans and some form of pickled marrow. But the colours of some of the produce is delightful, water melons have a deep red colour here and the tomatoes (of various breeds) look quite enticing. Even though other shops are just opening there’s numerous examples of snaps ... read more

Tricked you. It’s not hiking boots and poles (for Julie) yet but track shoes and sunscreen as we walk, boat and car/train around and over the Plitvice Lakes. But first, we found some pretty good ice-cream, not the best but pretty good. And that was after stumbling across an outdoor concert commemorating the Romani genocide. Yes I know that sounds as welcome as a pig at a Jewish picnic but it was surprisingly good. Probably 20 orchestral members (percussionist, harpist, violist…) and 4 excellent vocalists belted out some great sounds. Very gypsy/Spanish feel but fun. Now it’s today and breakfast and the customary raid on the rolls, roast beef, salami and cheese platters. Always enjoy breakfast then we were off round the corner to meet our transport for the day. It’s just over 2 hours travel ... read more

It’s the p.m. part of the post. Back to the upper town details of which were cleverly hidden on the back of the lower town map (who would have thunk to turn it over - don’t answer that I’m still getting over the flights here). Julie just read my blog. Big mistake for me as she’s busy correcting my spelling, grammar and details. She is upset by the fact that my Museum of Modern Art is really the Academy of Music. Pedantic as it may seem, it just means read ‘Museum of Modern Art’ as ‘Academy of Music’ except when it is really the Museum of Modern Art. The colourful one is the Academy of Music (go figure), the boring colour one is the Museum of Modern Art (go figure). Up the World’s shortest funicular railway ... read more

Here we go. Second leg and almost 5 hours gone and probably a little more than an hour to go. The ‘function of the information system’ is not (according to the cabin announcement) so I’m estimating but confident. So after boasting of Emirates entertainment and their range and quality of movies here I am with no flight information, no BBC news service and no movies. Additionally there’s no power for devices so use of the iPad has even been curtailed. That means only a couple of sudoku! Significantly smaller plane flying under the Dubai Airline livery rather than Emirates and in fact it’s an older 737, you remember them once upon a time they were state of the art but… Missed out on window seats this time so even the views have been cut. Here we go. Snuggled in, internet connection down, seats up, bags above and we are nearly off. Due to depart in 5 minutes and it appears we will. Strange how the few minutes seem important when the flight is scheduled for 14 hours! Good news is that if the wings fall off I’ll be the first to know as I’m almost directly above the port wing. Do you have port and starboard on planes? Boarding was seemless and easy but everything just takes time. We arrive and check in then we wait, we board then we wait but… The inflight info system has informed us that 2000 plus movies are part of the entertainment, that should mean 3 or 4 will be OK. Hope I find them. The safety details are currently displayed and have attracted ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Tullamarine July 31st 2023

We begin. Although it feels like the planning and preparation (in order to prevent PPP - cleaned up in some deference to my new and emerging audience, although truth be known they are already more corrupt than my small but loyal followers) has been going on for ages the necessary process through airport check in, emigration services and the almost obligatory 2 hours wait in the airport lounge has began. I’m always constantly amazed at just how many people are flying. The airport was a hive of activity and really abuzz with people, passengers and personnel. Obviously Tullamarine is not the only airport (otherwise we’d have nowhere to land!) and relatively simple maths (well at least no decimals!) would reveal just how many flights and flyers are out there. Our Emirates flight has connections all over ... read more

A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step... No it doesn't! The quote is often attributed to Confucius, probably because it's the only wise Chinese scholar most people know, but apparently it is not really from him. Not sure who it is really as I too do not know many wise Chinese scholars. Tzu, the Art of War author probably doesn't qualify. But whoever it was is still wrong. A journey even of less than a 1000 miles begins with heaps of time on screen booking accommodations, connecting flights, transport on GoOpti, insurance and the myriad of other details that need to be attended to. Jasmina, whose English is better than my Croatian, has become a pretty regular contributor to my email inbox. Julie, the travel agent and Yana from Traventuria who has organised ... read more
