Who knows what region I’m in Slovenia? That’s not a quiz question but a desperate plea for help filling in the categories above. I know I’m in Bled but…
The country is literally being flooded with flood warnings. Constantly my appreciation of Slovenian traditional folk music was interrupted with emergency flood warnings. Consequently I’m not the authority on the subject and may have to defer any questions on the subject to our GoOpti driver’s dad who we were told listens to nothing else. Nobody has heard of GoOpti I know and how I booked via them I’m not sure but they were excellent. Very good communication prior, punctual, comfortable and significantly cheaper than a taxi they provided just what we needed. The floods caused us some consternation as we thought roads may be blocked but our driver took some detours and managed to get us to the door in about the expected time. In addition to the floods there have been ‘orange’ weather alerts (that’s nothing to do with sunsets either!) and landslides that have taken quite a toll here. Our walking company sent email warnings regarding conditions and the hotel asked us to stay indoors (we didn’t but conditions
are miserable). The gorge we planned to visit is flooded and closed until further notice and really things are a bit grim. But don’t worry about us. Julie bought a bottle of wine and I purchased a 6 pack of local lager.
What we have seen of Slovenia is delightful. It’s green, lush and picturesque. The landscape is dotted with churches whose spires reach into the low clouds. Bled is very touristy, it has a casino. The mix of languages we have heard and the people we’ve seen reinforce the fact that it is a Mecca for walking tourists and outdoor enthusiasts. Obviously too many of them want to go to Vintgar Gorge. We will probably go and hope for ‘no show’ tickets because the floods and landslides may have put off some (not everyone is an Australian!) so we will see. As I type that the thunder rolled overhead and the rain has started again. God is obviously not an Aussie either.
Our hotel provides half board meaning breakfast and evening meals are included so it will be interesting to see what evening meals mean. Evening meals are in the next door hotel (our sister hotel) so
at least we can say we went out to eat. The facilities are pretty good, maybe not the 4 star we have become accustomed to but still good for us. The internet access everywhere has been surprisingly fast and surprisingly available. The Zagreb center had free access everywhere so it will be interesting to see how things are here in Slovenia.
The clouds have descended and those hills visible in one of photos are now longer visible. After the sunshine of the previous days it is a bit of a shock. But our plight compared to some here is nothing, so here’s hoping things are OK and the evening meal is the same.
That’s all folks.
