Apparently we are no longer in the Upper Carniola region. But until I stumble upon an answer as to what region we are really in that will do.
I like the walk that commences and finishes with a little train trip. That‘s a little in time not little in train. In fact the locomotives here are super size. I suppose the gradient and conditions dictate that size is important here but they did the trick for us for sure. The morning train from Bohinj Bistrica was the reverse trip of yesterday’s and we got what we expected. A short trip through the tunnel that lasted 7 minutes and returned us to the destination that had taken us 6 and bit hours to walk the day before. The afternoon train we made with no time to spare (dumb luck as we had not intended catching the train) but it was perfect for us. It €3.20 but we would have paid 10 times that as we had just walked about 20 km in pretty tough conditions and in quite hot conditions. Our accomodation is 6 km from our final destination and originally I thought we would miss the 6 km and walk off
track the 2 km to our accomodation but as we arrived at the turn off I thought let’s do the 6km and get a taxi back to the accommodation. Good plan? Yes but there’s no such thing as a taxi here. OK get to the station and ring our accomodation and figure something out. Thank goodness a train was literally just about to depart. I showed the conductor the place on the map, he nodded, we run. Just as well as our accommodation hosts speak about much English as I do Slovenian! But we are here, feed and happy. Good homemade soup, chicken and freshly picked mushroom pasta, some fruit and coffee.
Appears to be some problems uploading photos again. Consequently I’ll drop heaps in Facebook again.
Lots of panoramic shots today as I was really impressed with the scenery. It very big here. Not big sky like in Scotland but literally big. The mountains are big, the valleys big, the trees are big, everything is close and big.
Track conditions vary as they have in the past few days. Road surfaces were proportionally less but the sun and a top temp of 27 degrees made even that
surface a bit of a test. Always there are rocks but today probably more so than usual as a result of landslides following recent storms and flooding. Much of the track has a lovely layer of Autumn leaves underfoot and that is quite lovely to walk on but here no condition last for ever. Today we walked over 20 km and we can really only average just over 3km per hour (at home I manage over 5km an hour) as the conditions are tougher. Mt Lofty would be a joke here! Our walk started at 8:30 so we could catch the train and we didn’t arrive until after 5 o’clock so that’s a serious day for us. Both of us we quite popped as it was hot although in the forest the temperature was pleasant. Plenty of good, cold water was available from copious waterfalls and springs which helps but we were sure happy to see a train heading our way.
Tomorrow we catch the train back and have about 17 km of moderate to difficult walking and the expected temperature should reach 30 degrees which will be challenging.
But again caio for now.
