Geo: 5.41123, 100.335Sailing to Penang with Tommy on his boat Freya was a fantastic trip, what started out as a couple of days over and back to Langkawi, it turned into ten days sailing, exploring, sightseeing, partying, and generally having lots of fun. As Langkawi is a duty free island, we stocked up on food, drink and beer (well we're ole sea dogs you know), you just never know where you might end up and what facilities are available. Drew, Elliott and I all jumped on board Freya and settled in, got our stuff packed away and got ready to go. Friends helped us throw the lines off the dock and as we stored them, got out of the marina, got the fenders up and stored, it was time to crack a beer and look forward ... read more

Geo: 6.42512, 99.7937From the start of my time at the marina, every Friday a number of the guys have a day off the boat and head off round the island. Some weeks only a regular few head out, other weeks there can be quite a team.Normal starting point is going up to Scarborough Fish'n'Chip place up at Tanjung Rhu in the north of the island, from here there can be variations of heading to Drifters out by the airport, Rafii's in Cenang, Ray's Place in Kuah and back to the boat. We also started music on Monday nights in Drifters and the odd sing song at Ray's which was always fun. When I first started going, the crew was Johno and his son Michael, Neil, John and Phil, Jeff who always brought Ray's dog Ginger, and the ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684What a lovely surprise, my Aunt Lucy, Mary, Megan and Catherine were due to arrive in Kuala Lumpur on their way back from Australia after visiting family there. As I was in Malaysia at the time I had no hesitation to jump a bus down to see them for a couple of days, it would be the first family I've seen in 3 years! It's funny, people don't change a bit, it was like seeing them only yesterday and I couldn't wait to catch up on the family gossip (well there is a few of us you know)!I arrived on the overnight bus from Kuala Perlis in the north of Malaysia and thankfully managed to sleep most of the night, I checked into a Backpackers when I arrived and grabbed a shower and breakfast before ... read more

Geo: 6.62, 100.07I traveled over to Satun in Thailand, to see friends Jamie and Julie on their super yacht Thea which was in the boatyard for final touches. Jamie kindly came to collect me from the ferry station and took me out to the boat where I would stay with them for roughly one week.Jamie and Julie are a really lovely couple, fun, kind and friendly and really kind to each other, it's lovely to see. They are staying on the boat while working on it and they have a team of workers who come every morning, on time, and work hard all day which is why many boats come into Thailand for work/repairs etc. I've never been in a boatyard before and it's brilliant, what a fascinating place to see and watch the process of ... read more

Geo: 6.54652, 100.064Thea... what a stunning boat.I can't believe I have even set foot on a massive superyacht never mind becoming great friends with Jamie and Julie who own it, and being invited to stay. They are such funny, loving, genuine people and made the whole experience magical.Life at Royal Langkawi Yacht Club has been the most incredible experience, and I still need to pinch myself at some of the wonderful experiences I've had and the kindness of the people I have met. After buying the boat in Greece, they shipped it to Thailand for a total rebuild and ended up in the boatyard for two years. Employing many staff and having strict deadlines they finally sailed out on a test run which brought them to Langkawi where I met them through my friend Neil. Neil had ... read more

Geo: 6.32, 99.85Ooo what fun we had... Joe and Anita, (my neighbours on the marina) decided to tie the knot with a Pirate themed wedding. It all started with my brother Eddie's joke, 'Why are pirates called pirates? Coz they aaarrgh... har har'. Once the idea was set in motion, Anita, Joe and I set about getting every ones pirate names for the wedding using an on line Pirate Name Generator which was hilarious. With the groom Joe 'Sword Jugglin' Ted', bride-to-be Anita 'Gorgeous Connie Smythe' and me 'Filthy Sophie Smythe', we set about getting everyone's pirate names for the wedding. Anita's daughters Karina 'Pirate Kate the Parrotless' and Louise 'Cap'n Jen Beerbong' were due to visit for a few weeks from Denmark, so it was a lovely idea to have the wedding while the girls were ... read more

Geo: 6.32, 99.85 Tony & Santong invited a few of us out on a day sail from the Royal Langkawi Marina on their Cruiser 'Destiny's Voyager' or DV for short. Joe, Anita, Karina and Louise, Raul and Janine and myself all jumped aboard which proved to be a fun filled day... We all brought some food and drink on board and got ready to leave around 8am, we got the boat untied and smoothly headed out from the marina to explore some of Langkawi's 99 islands. It really is a stunning place and gives you a whole new feel of the island when exploring around. The cruise out was beautiful with great company and perfect weather, past the luxurious Best Western Hotel, floating villages, deserted beaches, local men fishing, yachts anchored off and watching the impressive ... read more

Geo: 6.29511, 99.726 Cenang is the main tourist area in Langkawi and is a real jewel. A beautiful beach, fabulous for swimming and the home to stunning sunsets on the island. I know I've written posts about Cenang before but it really is chillin' on the beach time. Cenang is normally a day off from looking after the boat and for meeting up with friends from all parts of the island. I have many ex pat friends who live in Cenang who I spent a long time with last year, and have thoroughly enjoyed catching up with them once more and introducing them to some new friends. Big Colin, who was a fireman in Glasgow for many years and a real character who loves his magic, and my friend Luan especially, her son Gabriel and I ... read more

Geo: 6.29511, 99.726 Well every Bride to Be has to have a bit of a doo before they get wed, so the girls and I arranged a wee outing over to Pantai Cenang to visit a beach bar or 3 (maybe 4) to celebrate Anita's upcoming 'Pirate themed' wedding. It turned out to be a fun filled night with everyone in high spirits. We all met at Charlie's Bar in the marina and after a couple of starter drinks we jumped a minibus over to the main tourist area of Pantai Cenang to take in the beautiful beach while watching the sun going down. Joe and the boys all met up in the marina bar too, their plan was to hit the hot spots in Kuah and by the sounds of it they had a fun ... read more

Geo: 6.32, 99.85 Well this is all new to me... I'm on the boat on my own, in a marina. and in a different part of Langkawi that I'm used to. I only stayed in a marina one night before so I've no idea what to expect. It's a bit unsettling being on my own and having the responsibility of looking after 'Malmuirie', but thankfully I soon settle in and get into a good routine of working away on the boat during the day and making new friends in the evening. It turns out we have great neighborhoods in the marina and I quickly strike up a fantastic friendship with Joe and Anita on ‘Coral Kuching' beside us which is a lovely catamaran. They use it as their home and we end up having regular coffee ... read more
