Geo: 1.3532, 104.224The road from Mersing to Singapore was interesting to say the least... sh*t I know how to scare myself!!! I'll keep this blog brief but for me it was one of the most fascinating, interesting and scary journey's that I've had. It started off well with a plan to sick to the coast route of south east Malaysia as much as possible but like everything I do on a whim, it proved extremely challenging. It started off well and I managed to find my route out of Mersing towards Kota Tinggi which was pretty much on the main route, but although a fast road I didn't have any dramas. After 50km or so I managed to find the coastal route I was looking for although I then proceeded to get lost a couple of times ... read more

Geo: 2.845, 104.16I had heard so much about Tioman Island from many Malay as well as tourists and ex-pats alike that it was in my plans to visit while here in Malaysia. So after booking my ferry ticket and storing my bicycle at the hotel I was staying at in Mersing I headed off for a new adventure. I've been on several of these ferries now and although dreading the first few that I caught (thanks for looking after me Danny), I have to say I'm getting a bit more used to them although they can be really rough affairs.Tioman Island's Salang Beach was actually featured in the 1958 American musical movie South Pacific as the beach called 'Bali Hai' and is a stunning place to be... with crystal clear seas, white sandy beaches, tropical fish ... read more

Geo: 2.0251, 103.333The road over to Mersing was fab... I love getting back on the bike, I mean 'every time' that I get back on it, this feeling tells me that this is what I should be doing and to stop hanging around places for too long, new years resolution 'must do better'...ha ha you'd never guess I watched Bridget Jones last night (again)! From Melaka I only cycled as far as Muar before checking into a cheap hotel, although I really didn't feel well and ended up in my bed for a few days, and only managed a little exploring around. It's very like Penang and Malaka with the archways and style of houses and has a high Chinese population which is reflected in the style. It has many local fishing boats and each wee ... read more

Geo: 2.21594, 102.253I was pleased to arrive in Melaka a day early as I thought it was going to be Christmas Eve before I arrived, but the road down was great, it was an enjoyable journey and I loved being back out on the road. I managed to find my accommodation down by the river and it turns out that I'm not far from the main Jonkor Street tourist area which is nice and after check in I decided to take my bike for a service in a bike shop I passed on the way in as I desperately need new brakes plus the gears/chain etc. needs a good clean - first things first!Discovery Guest House is great and I manage to get lots of information from the staff of places to visit, where to eat ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684I've been back and forth now to Kuala Lumpur (KL) a number of times and I'm delighted to be staying once more with fantastic friends in their hill top condo which has a superb view of the city, honestly you can see for miles and miles with no obstructions, wow!Not only did I stay before I left for Brunei, Borneo and the Philippines but on my return, and for a spell over the Christmas and New Year period while I was trying to sort out an extended Indovisa. I feel like I have got to know the city quite well and have surprised myself by both cycling in, round about and out of the city which is no mean feat I can tell you, the traffic in KL can be chaos pretty much all ... read more

Geo: 12.9164, 123.604The overnight bus to Donsol was freezing... the air conditioning on these buses is always turned up full and I'm relieved that I have my down jacket with me which means I end up getting a great sleep, all cozy underneath. There are certain clothes that I won't part with and my thermals plus my down jacket are here to stay.I wanted to visit Donsol to try and see the whale sharks which are found in this area, these sharks are the largest fish in the world with some being recorded at 12-14 meters long. They are docile and slow moving filter feeding sharks that live primarily on plankton, but their name 'whale shark' is due to the sheer scale and size which is similar to whales instead of sharks so it should be ... read more

Geo: 14.6007, 120.982'Happy Birthday to Me, Happy Birthday to Me'... I've never flown anywhere on my birthday which makes the trip to Manila in the Philippines even more special, I never thought I'd visit here, it wasn't in my plans, but because I wanted to visit Borneo, well I was just next door... Before I arrived I had been looking into some volunteer opportunities to try and help aid the recent Typhoon Haiyan disaster and it looks like there are placements available while I'm here so it's maybe time to give something back!My first impression on Manila is fantastic, instantly I love it, it's chaos... I can't believe all the transport and in particular the jeepnays which are the coolest things ever, honestly I've never even seen a picture of these before and I don't know ... read more

Geo: 5.86667, 117.967I only have a short time in Borneo because I've booked onward flights to the Philippines then back to KL to continue cycling, I had planned to climb Mt.Kinabalu and nothing else and thought I would have no chance of seeing the Orangutans and Proboscis Monkeys (which are only found in Borneo) but it turns out, that wasn't the case. After climbing down from Mt.Kinabalu, I decided to get a bus back down to KK so I could head to Sepilock in the morning to see the orangutans...'eejit' I know, I could hardly walk after the climb and should have been resting but I couldn't resist the chance of seeing them while I'm here. The scenery on the long 6 hour journey was lovely with mountains and oil palm trees which fill every space, ... read more

Geo: 5.96596, 116.071My reason for visiting Borneo, wasn't to see the Orangutans which is why most tourist visit, but instead it was the challenge to summit Mount Kinabalu. At 4,095m (around 13,435 ft) over only a couple of days, I knew it was going to be a challenge considering I've not done any real climbing since the Rohtang La in India which was an interesting climb!I left Brunei on a ferry and stopped at Labuan Island which is part of Malaysia and once again we're through Immigration. Labuan is a Duty Free Island and everyone is stocking up on cigarettes, alcohol, perfumes, sweets etc. which is the norm. It's an early start next day leaving the Guest House (6am) for a bus to the port which is the quickest way to get to Kota Kinabalu (KK), ... read more

Geo: 4.94867, 114.951'I can't believe I'm going to Brunei... Brunei of all places' I repeated to Steve for the millionth time, he must be sick of hearing that by now but I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would ever... ever be here! Brunei... I had myself so syced up that just before touch down I felt completely overwhelmed as the tears run down my cheeks, honestly what was going on as I quickly got myself together! On arrival Steve and I got through Immigration with me once again trying to save the few blank pages left on my passport, and they kindly squeezed a stamp in another near full page. We got through Customs who seemed more interested if we were carrying cigarettes or alcohol, Brunei is a completely dry country, there's no alcohol ... read more
