Geo: 6.32, 99.85 Prior to arrival at Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, the club confirmed a space and emailed our berth details however, on arrival it was very difficult to make out the exact location or even the dock names on entry. Despite trying to contact the Club by radio for assistance berthing, we received no response and in fact no help whatsoever to dock the vessel. I was starting to wonder how we were going to mange this on our own! We slowly entered the marina and thankfully spotted D dock after what seemed like an eternity and started maneuvering the boat slowly towards Berth 37. Drew did an incredible job of steering the boat into place despite it being a tight turn with other boats all around our berth and fighting the currents however, he ... read more

Geo: 7.97501, 98.3515 What an incredible experience... I left my bike in Bukit Lawang to join my friend Drew who kindly invited me to go sailing from Phuket, Thailand to Langkawi, Malaysia on his stunning 47ft Vagabond Cutter Ketch. Although a bit apprehensive as I've never been out sailing before, the whole trip turned out to be a magical experience that I will never forget. Thank you Drew for your kindness, patience and clear instructions on the whole trip down... and boy'o'boy what fun we had. I met Drew at Royal Phuket Marina in Thailand and found his boat by asking some of the local guys who were working. I couldn't believe the size of it... I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't this!!! I met Drew in Langkawi last year and although ... read more

Geo: 5.41123, 100.335I return from Medan, Sumatra to Penang, Malaysia but realistically it's only a pit stop. I jumped the bus from the airport into Georgetown and check back into the Rainbow Lodge where I've stayed a few times and it's nice to see familiar faces again as I didn't think I would return here. The staff at Rainbow arranged my journey onwards to Penang which was the same price if I booked it myself, and it was easier getting uplifted from the guest house instead of walking down to Komtar and the main bus station.I spent the day wandering around Georgetown and headed down to the Reggae Bar in the evening where I know the owner and staff. It's a great spot sitting in Labuan Chulia which is a main tourist area, I love sitting people ... read more

Geo: -7.83075, 112.697I returned to Bukit Lawang from Banda Ache as I had left my bike there, and I wanted to stay longer in the jungle. I've made some fantastic friends here and I love living in the jungle strangely enough, it's a beautiful place next to the Bohorok River.Once again I meet up with great local friends who take me around villages and local houses and it truly is a whole different experience than being a tourist and hanging out with other westerners. I've a couple of friends that are keen for me to stay and even go to the extent of taking me round plots of land that are for sale that I could build a house on and live in Bukit Lawang. Although I love it, I've too much traveling to do so ... read more

Geo: 5.55, 95.32My first experience of the Boxing Day Tsunami 2004 apart from seeing it on the news, was in Tangalle in Sri Lanka. The devastation and heartbreak encountered is beyond belief and now I find myself in Banda Aceh which was the worst hit of all the places affected.I had arranged with a friend from Bukit Lawang to meet one his friends, a Becak driver however on arrival he's broken his ankle and sends another friend to meet me at the bus station which was kind. His friend instead will take me around for the day to visit the many sites and places of interest and I had an enlightening visit packed full of information and reality. In the early morning of Boxing Day 2004, a 9.3 magnitude earthquake struck just off the western coast of ... read more

Geo: -7.83075, 112.697Stuck in the jungle Baby... yep that's me. Bukit Lawang has been incredible not only for the jungle and orangutans... the people, the villages, the cultures, the scenery, the mountains, the rivers, the flowers and fruits, the many animals, there's so much to see, do and get involved in that I've found myself staying much longer than I anticipated but it's all part of the adventure.I love being involved in local culture and love the fact that I'm invited everywhere with the friends I have made here. I'm not shy to explore and the be out in villages in the middle of nowhere on my own, normally via a motorbike that I've borrowed... all part of the fun. The shouts of 'bouley, bouley' go up to mark my arrival which basically means white tourist, ... read more

Geo: -7.83075, 112.697It took me a few days to cycle from Lake Toba via Pemantangsiantar and Medan to Bukit Lawang but the roads are crazy, really fast and furious with all sorts of obstacles and challenges along the way. I've been forced off the road several times with buses overtaking trucks on narrow roads, they give you no option but to get out of their way, dodging the potholes and other bikers! So it's been a fun start to cycling in Indonesia but on the plus side I'm always amazed at the people I meet along the way and the kindness of them although they can't believe I'm traveling out here on my own.Permatangsiantar and Medan were both cities with really heavy traffic and I didn't hang around too long although Medan had a fantastic Central ... read more

Geo: 2.60835, 98.9346The ferry from Melaka was straight forward and an extremely calm journey, very smooth which I was relieved about, maybe I'm finally getting more used to the ferries. On arrival I found a local shop and bought an Indonesian sim card for my phone so I had some maps and was welcomed by my warm shower host at the shop.I followed him out to my accommodation which turned out to be a room at the back of an English school, and despite the long day it became apparent that I would be expected to join in with classes as a native English speaker which isn't strictly 'warm showers' purpose. Thankfully I just took it in my stride and I ended up participating in 5 or 6 classes with the kids plus a couple of ... read more

Geo: 1.5059, 103.382I had decided to cross the Woodlands Bridge from Singapore straight into Johor Bahru and although I wouldn't stay here it was nice to cycle through and be back in Malaysia. It took a couple of days for me to cycle back up to Melaka as I had planned to stop in coastal places on route. The journey takes me though lovely scenery, beaches, farming areas and plantations, many Mosques and traditional Malay villages, fishing ports and I even met a couple of cyclist heading to Singapore on route. I had decided to camp on the way and I was fortunate to stay with a local family the first night who let me put my tent up under their garage area at their home, and gave me access to their toilet and wash room ... read more

Geo: 1.28941, 103.85I boarded the 'bum boat' from Tanjung Pengelih, Malaysia to Chiangi Port in Singapore, my bike was lifted onboard for the journey which would take around one hour. On route there are many cargo and other ships, they are working at filling an area from the land outwards with sand imported from Vietnam which in time will be an extension to Singapore and it's interesting watching how they are building. On arrival I got through border control and after scanning all my luggage they allowed me to push my bike through, gave me a map of Singapore and directed me towards my destination which was kind. I had been invited to stay with friends Ed and Emily who I met at the start of my travels in Nepal while trekking and again in Siem Riep ... read more
