Geo: 6.29514, 99.7242 After arriving in Malaysia I visited the Tourist Information Center, picked up some information and decided to start my touring of Malaysia in Langkawi. I had recently looked at visiting from Koh Lanta but the boats were off season, so I'll start here before traveling south to Penang, Cameron Highland then onto Kuala Lumpur. So, as soon as I'm over the border I hang a right and head straight for the coast although making it a pretty long day. It's very different crossing into Malaysia, I've switched from Temples and a Buddhist culture to Mosque's and a Muslim one, this is going to take some adjustment together with the currency, the language… everything again but hopefully I will settle in soon. The journey over to Kuala Polis was beautiful, from the lush rice ... read more

Geo: 7.00166, 100.47 It was all a bit fraught leaving Koh Phi Phi, because I had stayed an extra day I'm going to have to think of how to cross the border in time but the ferry to Koh Lanta doesn't leave until 11am plus I really picked the wrong route. From Koh Lanta I need to get another 2 car ferries back towards Krabi direction before I can head south which means I'm not going to make it but I'll try the best I can. My bike was secure on the ferry but I was really paranoid as there were no sides where they tied it only the back rail they tied it onto which meant I spent the whole journey watching it as the sea got choppier and we were getting more tossed about. ... read more

Geo: 7.73944, 98.7733I was incredibly lucky with my timing when I arrived in Krabi, I asked for directions to the port and a ferry was due to leave within 30 mins, so I booked on, got organised and carefully rolled my bike across a plant to the ferry where I tied it on. I realise there won't be much cycling on the island but I don't know how I will get off the island so I need to have my bike with me. The trip over is lovely and I remember all the islands at Krabi from a few years ago, which I enjoy seeing again and lovely memories of being out here in a long tail boat with a silly big grin on my face at the joy of being here. It takes a few ... read more

Geo: 8.46848, 99.0788Although the weather was a bit overcast it's fine for me cycling, it only takes me a couple of days to get over to Krabi and across to Koh Phi Phi which is where I want to stay for a couple of days after my last visit which only lasted a few hours, it gave me a taste of the place. So basically I cut straight across the country heading for Krabi and thankfully manage to stay off the main highway altogether until the last 20km. It's a nice couple of days through many rubber plantations, stunning scenery and lots of shouts and waves from the Thai people. Initially I thought of heading to Koh Lanta and across but after my hotel told me to head straight for Krabi which is the main route ... read more

Geo: 9.14, 99.33Thailand really is the ‘Land of Smiles', on leaving Hua Hin and heading south I continually get shout out's, waves, thumbs up from the locals, the passing jeeps, motorbikes, cars, lorries etc. no-one can believe that I'm cycling out here on my own. I travel through beautiful scenery on the road south to Surat Thani and I am continually rewarded by kindness. On leaving I cycled through one of Thailand's many National Parks with the limestone mountains lining my road and the palm filled beaches by the sea which are stunning. As I'm on the bicycle and traveling much slower than other forms of transport, it gives me the opportunity to chat to the locals on my route, and visit many places of interest that you just wouldn't see otherwise Ike the strangely giant ... read more

Geo: 12.569, 99.9524On leaving Kanchanaburi I visited the War Cemetery which sadly is a vast affair which stretches out in memorial to the many POW victims who died on the Burma Railway. There are around 7000 victims buried here who are mainly Australian, British and Dutch, two of the graves alone hold the ashes of 300 men who were cremated, and a plaque details 11 Indian men.  Next to the cemetery seems to be a Chinese cemetery and there are many more of these on the way out of town however many appear to be more mass graves… Getting off the main route I headed into the mountains on the opposite side of the river and was rewarded with stunning scenery, interesting monuments which seemed to be in groups, massive staircases up the mountain with my favorite ... read more

Geo: 14.02, 99.53I could see the limestone kirst mountains from a distance when I was cycling in, and prayed that the end of my day wouldn't be all uphill, thankfully it turns out the mountains are on the opposite side of the river (I'm such a wimp) which saves my weary legs. In saying that if I had no option then I would soon be up and over, you just don't have a choice and glad that I have a certain stubborn streak. The mountains make a lovely backdrop on the approach to Kanchanaburi which turns out to be a really lovely place, with a nice feel to it. I'm staying at the Jolly Frog which was recommended by friends as is in a great location, with a big garden area and access to the river ... read more

Geo: 13.82, 100.06It was a busy road out of Bangkok which didn't let up all day, I feel like I don't properly breathe in the chaos and actually have a long drawn out sigh of relief when I hit a quiet spot which is how I know I'm under pressure. It was like a motorway leaving the city and I find it extremely hard going when I have to use the off ramps when joining new roads, it's like cycling on a spaghetti junction. At least the first 30km out of Bangkok was just chaos before I managed to get off and onto a single track country road full of banana plantations, palm trees and rice paddies which was a welcome relief from the traffic. At one point after losing my bearings I visited a massive ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Bangkok is a fascinating place, what an incredible visit… minibus, bus, sky train, ferry or water taxi, moto taxi, rickshaw, moto, cycle, you name it, they've got it, and I loved it.My first trip into the big smoke was via minibus, then sky train, then ferry, all of which went very smoothly and I thoroughly enjoyed. I had a trip north and south of the Chao Praya River most of which I had my head stuck out the side of the 'water taxi' as we careered through the city, what a wonderful experience and I had no idea that it was here. I'm blown away by the Bangkok skyline which is incredible so much so that I stayed on the river until the final stop of Nonthaburi Pier where I got off and found ... read more

Geo: 13.9833, 100.617I've split my Bangkok entry into two parts with the first entry from north of the city and second part slap bang in the middle of the big smoke. After fixing my puncture from the journey into Bangkok, I decided to look for a bike shop as the gears were slipping I think, on the way in. Although Nawin suggested a place nearby, the woman in the shop purely wanted money from me the minute she saw me, she could speak English well, but she was just nasty! She had no interest in me telling her what the problem was with the bike and before she even thought of touching the bike wanted 1000 TBH to change the chain or she wouldn't consider doing a thing. After getting a new chain while on the ... read more
