Geo: 10.3812, 104.486I leave for Ha Tien the next morning which isn't far away, it's a lovely cycle along the coast and I realise I'm going to miss Vietnam. Just before I get into Ha Tien there's a big billboard for the 'Superfast' ferry over to Phu Quoc so I decide to go down and try and get a refund on my ticket. I was pleasantly surprised when I did get a full refund although they never gave a reason for my boat being cancelled, but I had to be back on the mainland as my visa is due to expire tomorrow.Ha Tien looks a lovely place so instead of heading straight into Cambodia I spend my last night here as my refund paid for my room. Ha Tien has a lovely riverside and walkway which ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta » Kien Giang » Phu Quoc Island February 8th 2013

Geo: 10.3041, 103.997I had a nice journey over to Phu Quoc Island on the superfast ferry which had us there in no time, the only downside is having no view, and you can't get outside and you sit too low to see out of the windows easily. Anyway on arrival I made my way to Duong Dong on the opposite side of the Island but it's only around 12km away and is fairly flat. On arrival I met Angela who I met in Saigon, and enjoyed hanging out for a few days.First stop after checking in was the beach, and I wasn't disappointed. The sun was just starting to set and it was just beautiful, colors of a red and orange sun, setting on a green, blue sea turning it purple on the waves, stunning. We ... read more

Geo: 10.03, 105.78What a place! From Saigon I took an organised trip down the Mekong Delta before cycling down, the trip only cost $6 and was well worth the money. I was collected from my hostel to catch the bus to My Tho where we were put on our first boat of the day. This was a fairly large boat which took us across the river to one of the many islands, I love boats however this one felt quite unstable with them balancing the people either side, but when someone moved the whole boat moved to that side! Once across we walked down through a village where they showed us bee hives and coconut candy making and we had an opportunity to buy products. We were given a demonstration on how to open coconuts (although ... read more

Geo: 10.7592, 106.662After arriving in Saigon to a 'Hero' welcome from the Taiwan Tornado team I settled in and chilled out for the best part of two weeks, staying in a hostel just off Pham Ngu Lao. On arrival I met Michelle again literally in the street, when I was looking for a place to stay and ended up in the same hotel which was great. She's leaving tomorrow down to the Mekong Delta before going to Phu Quoc Island which means I can get her room with a view which will be nice. Only problem is, the woman from the Guest House has taken a dislike to me and my bike, and wants me to move my bike or leave! I tried to explain to her that on arrival I had discussed my bike safety ... read more

Geo: 17.0849, 107.111It's a relief actually to get back on the bike and moving again, the weather is fantastic, clear blue sunny skies and lots of lovely scenery. These are cycling notes really so won't interest everyone but even have a wee look at some of my pictures, the beaches and scenery down this part of Vietnam were beautiful. On leaving Nha Trang I passed all sorts of resorts and ended up out on a peninsula as I am trying to stick to the coastline as much as possible. I pass Diamond Bay resort which has a golf driving range in it, someone is using it at the minute swinging and whacking golf balls out into the sea, I didn't expect to see that here in Vietnam. The road is pretty remote which I like, it ... read more

Geo: 12.2453, 109.199After a long day (138km) I finally arrive in Nha Trang, it's just starting to get dark and the traffic is really busy so I slow my speed down and take my time navigating to the hotel I plan on staying in. The first sights are magical, there's a real festive feel here still with lights everywhere, the bridge coming in is blue's and red's and way in the distance I spot what looks like half a dozen Eifel Towers? I head through the Happy New Year signs and manage to find my hotel before darkness sets in so I'm quite relieved, I give the bike a quick wash down and dry off before putting it away for a few days. So I manage to meet up with Michelle which is the reason I ... read more

Geo: 11.7501, 108.377Because I've missed part of the Ho Chi Minh trail by cycling down the coast, when I got to Nha Trang I decide to extend my visa and meanwhile head back into the central highlands to see the Rong Houses up in Kon Tum. It's a bit of a spur of the moment decision, and really out of my way to Kon Tom, so I arrange to leave my bike at the hotel and jump the local buses up to where I want to go. It will probably take me a couple of days alone to get up to Kon Tom, where I will need to find accommodation etc. before heading back to Nha Trang via Da Lat. What a journey, I love local transport! I walked up to the bus station and managed ... read more

Geo: 12.2453, 109.199It was a wild day leaving Hoi An but I've stayed here way too long already, I must admit it's a thought getting back on the bike but I'll make my next main stop at Nha Trang and maybe catch up with Michelle again. No sooner said than I got a message from Michelle saying she's had an accident on the motorbike and is now in Nha Trang so I'm going to try and get there as quickly as possible and it's a tough few days down the road. Tam Ky, Quang Ngai, Quin Non, Tuy Hoa to Nha Trang… most days over 100 km and the weather really hasn't been great either! The road round the coast though is brilliant and I do enjoy my days even if it is tough going, it ... read more

Geo: 15.875, 108.336Hoi An is a stunning place, from the beautiful beaches to the river boats, markets, stalls and temples, I ended up spending New Year here with a number of friends I made in Hue which was really good fun, I had good company in Michelle, Jessie, Rory and Cormac and hung out either on the motorbikes or for food and drinks! The photos really speak for themselves, I love the fishing down on the beaches and the funny 'round' boats they use which I loved watching, and could all day I even spotted some of these with engines which look like a chain saw with a pole and prop added (probably use less fuel). I rode out to De Nang for the day with Rory and Cormac and was in awe at the size of ... read more

Geo: 16.7, 106.883Even though I love my bicycle and riding through this fabulous country, it was time for a wee blast up the mountain road on a motorbike, to take on the real challenges faced by this mode of transport… and what a ride it turned out to be!So I hired a bike from the hostel for 4 days and decided to head west once again into the most western part of the Ho Chi Minh Trail which I was desperate to see, and one of the girls joined me. It was great fun riding up into the mountains but we were no sooner starting up, when the road turned into thick red sludge! It was really challenging trying to keep the bikes upright and keeping the momentum going, men were working on upgrading the road ... read more
