Geo: 26.4002, 103.202I get back to PanZhiHua after a really enjoyable few days and get organised once again to get back on the road cycling down to Kunming, I'm in no hurry and being on my own I can just enjoy the journey, the locals, the scenery which is what it's all about, and why I'm cycling. The road after a while is in terrible condition, the gradient isn't too bad but it's a really dirty and dusty old day, but I can't get over the countryside I'm cycling through, it's not what I'd expected in China but it continues to amaze me. The people are friendly and kind and I enjoy the thumbs up and the smiles on the road which keep you going. I stop in at a village for lunch, double check my ... read more

Geo: 27.8205, 99.7074From PanZhiHua I decided to get the bus to Lijiang firstly which is around 9 hours away, from the hotel I tried to get a taxi but they were all full and I was getting tight for time after collecting my visa in the morning. One of the ‘minivan' taxi's said he would take me for 12 yuen but that's double the taxi fare so I declined, instead one of the guys hanging around the hotel (looking for work I think) said he would take me for 6 yuen on his motorbike so without hesitation I jumped on and I was handed a yellow hardhat to wear, I must have looked a picture! Although helmets are not compulsory here, many wear their work hard hats on their bikes as helmets, they're all red or ... read more

Geo: 26.55, 101.733PanZhiHua is a fairly industrial town, some roads are black with coal and the road in was full of road works and heavy traffic. I'm not staying at the fancy hotels in the city, instead I opt for a cheap place on the road out which is great, a big double bed, en-suite, TV and computer with 24 hours internet access in other words, everything you could want. It's a nice family who run the hotel and I find the owner funny, everywhere I want to go he literally takes me there. When I arrived he showed me a good place to eat and even sat at a table in the place talking with the owners until I was finished, then walked me back to the hotel, he's lovely. So my purpose here is to ... read more

Geo: 29.4951, 102.625So from Chengdu we only cycled around 50 km, when Jane said she wasn't feeling well again, so we holed up in a hotel for the rest of the day. While she slept, I went out and around town trying out my new cycle shoes and clips but it will take me ages to get used to them without continually falling off the bike because you're feet at clipped in! I found the next day really trying, the panniers were popping off the rack at every bump and it's not a good road, I feel I've just added a problem to the bike instead of making it better, I need to stop several times to fix the rack back into place. I know that front racks are difficult to fit with a suspension set ... read more

Geo: 30.67, 104.07It's a relief getting into the hostel and getting my own room for a few days, I sorely needed a wee bit of space. I've ordered a front rack and panniers to be delivered to the hostel here, as well as spare (folding) tyres and cycle shoes with clips and pedals for them hopefully to make my travels a bit easier. The bike has been a bit off balance so front panniers should help although I'm a bit daunted by having the capacity to carry more luggage which is why I didn't have them to start with , I will need to make sure I keep my weight down to a minimum. Once again however, customs have a hold of my parcels and it ends up another saga trying to get them delivered, especially ... read more

Geo: 32.443, 105.818Cycling notes mainly for reference…From HanZhong it's a fantastic journey, firstly we cycle into Da'an 85 km away which was mainly downhill but through a beautiful valley, it makes all the hard work of going up mountains worthwhile when you get to go down them. The valley is just breathtaking and I could take a million photographs, it really is picturesque. Unfortunately the downhill doesn't last and it's a steep switchback next day however more back tyre trouble, this time I was almost at the top of the mountain when I heard a bang a thought was a shotgun and jumped out of my skin! It turns out it I had a blow out in my back tyre, the whole side wall of had ripped which gave me the fright of my life. I ... read more

Geo: 33.0707, 107.025So the start of my cycling begins and I can tell you it's a shock to the system, I get the rear panniers on, my dry bag with tent on top of them which is tricky, my handlebar bag and get a quick photo in front of the hostel before leaving. Straight away the bike feels wrong, all wobbly but it's my first go with it all loaded up and I hadn't considered what it would be like with weight on it, it hadn't thought to do a test run. It means I find it difficult to steer and concentrating on the roads and the route out of Xi'an proves a challenge. It takes all my concentration not to run into anything as I gradually get more used to it but I'm grateful that ... read more

Geo: 34.27, 108.9I left Beijing and caught the train to Xi'an, I've been in contact through email to meet up with a friend of a friend to start cycling with and as she is on the road already I've arranged to meet her in Xi'an where she's due to arrive in a few days. Her plan is cycling from Beijing to Melbourne where she's from, and it follows the basic route I plan on taking which is down through China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and eventually to Australia, so why not by bike, it seems like an adventure to me. So I head off to meet her and redirect delivery of my bike that I just ordered online while in Malaysia, to the hostel in Xi'an after clearance by customs, fingers crossed! Geo: 39.9165, 116.391I've been really worried about coming to China for months now for some reason, but guess what, the second I'm here I'm okay. I come out the airport, find a proper taxi and head to the hostel arriving in no time at all and head to my bunk as it's 3 in the morning. So bring on my next adventures, I am hoping to be in China for 3 months in all, giving me a chance to see some of the vast and wonderful cities, the mountain areas, and get off the tourist track gaining a real insight into China and its people, first things first though, a few hours sleep before heading out to explore the incredible Beijing. The absolute, very first thing that strike's me about China, is the scale and size ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684I am really sad to leave Sri Lanka, it was never on my agenda to visit but once there I found it really hard to leave with one month turning into three months before I knew it. I leave behind lots of friends and happy memories and beautiful beaches, sea and scenery which I will sorely miss, but it's onto new adventures and Kuala Lumpur is some where I have always wanted to go since a friend from college who was from KL made it sound magical… another world. So I depart Colombo on a fairly short flight out to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for only a flying 5 day visit on route to Beijing in China, and I'm glad I did. From the airport I caught an express bus into the city and although no ... read more
