Geo: 32.1024, 77.5619From the Golden Temple I managed to get the free bus to the train station and boarding the train, my plan is to get the Toy Train from here over to Dharamasala, then the bus to McLeod Ganj. Unfortunately the Toy Train isn't running as hasn't been for almost a year so I end up heading to the bus station and just caught the bus. I enjoyed the journey and it is nice seeing the mountains again, there are a few tourists on the bus and strangely enough I recognize them all from staying at the temple. I get into a guest house, unfortunately the restaurant is closed so I can't get even a cuppa on arrival, I head out to the town which is small and easy to find your way around. After a ... read more

Geo: 31.6331, 74.8656I arrived after a 36 hour journey all the way from Kathmandu, firstly I got the 18 hour overnight bus that would take me from Kathmandu to Mahendranagar at the west border with India. From here I got a local bus to the border and checked in with Nepal Immigration for my leaving stamp, then I walked a good 2km along a sandy road and up to the Indian Immigration were I was allowed to enter, after the paperwork was finished again I walked, maybe another km over a couple of bridges and into India. I threw my luggage on a rickshaw to take me into Banbasa for the Haridwar bus which thankfully arrived soon after, and I was now on a 10 hour local bus which would get me in early evening. It's just ... read more

Geo: 28.5483, 83.8037Trekking notes won't interest everyone… or they may just tear at you to get here! Be warned. From Kathmandu I meet up with my guide Nima and head through to Pokhara on the microbus, these small buses take 5 hours instead of 8 hours on the local bus, taking 3 hours off the journey time, but it's all down to the lunatics that drive them. They go at terrifying breakneck speeds on these treacherous roads and to be honest it's just better not looking to closely at the road, better to just quickly enjoy what scenery you can on the way past. Anyway thankfully I arrive safely and spend the night in Pokhara after hiring a bike on arrival and heading to get my ACAP and TIMS permits, that allow access into the Annapurna Region. ... read more

Geo: 28.1374, 85.5972During the night there was the worst thunder and lightning storm I've ever heard, the walls were shaking, and it didn't let up the whole night, I'm not looking forward to the 8hr bus journey to Shyabrubesi. I was picked up in a taxi and taken up to the bus park for the 7am bus and met my guide Lakba there. The weather is really wild; the roads are like rivers with debris everywhere and the bus is bouncing about the road… it's really quite scary! It had to ‘squeeze' past a few trucks on the cliff edge before we were stopped dead in our tracks by a huge landslide. Massive boulders landed on the road in front of us, closing it completely, and the fog is now so dense you can hardly your ... read more

Geo: 27.877, 82.5236 This really was an incredible journey, Santa from Thimi Ceramics had arranged for me to go and visit rural pottery villages way out in the west of Nepal. I left Kathmandu on the 'tourist bus' at 6:30am with Santosh who picked me up by taxi and was to drop me off in Lamahi where I would then be collected by Arun, and taken to his family home. The journey was around 12 hours and the road being Nepal was just chaos. We passed Chitwan and Bhutal, and started heading up the mountain roads until finally we arrived at Lamahi. Arun came to collect me by motorbike, and we rode out 20km to his family home taking in the most stunning sunset over the River Rapti. I feel like I've arrived in the African ... read more

Geo: 27.703, 85.3967 Now this is the place I really want to be, I walk from Braktapur but have to concede after a couple of hours that I can't find the place I'm looking for! I have a number for Thimi Ceramics and I stop and ask the man at a bottle shop (because it's at a main junction) and they guys are very helpful, with one of them calling the number for me, and before I know it I'm getting picked up on a motorbike by someone from the Thimi Ceramics place, I'm impressed. While I was waiting on him I must have looked really suspect sitting outside a bottle shop and was getting disapproving looks from the women and giggles from local girls… it was funny. So Laxba arrived and took me up to ... read more

Geo: 27.673, 85.4279 I decided to head off to Bhaktapur for a couple of days! Packed my wee day sack and went for the local bus at Ratna Park. Only 22Rs which is nothing to get here and the whole bus told me when it was time to get off!! I paid 1100Rs which is fairly steep for my ticket into Durbar Square but I did get them to validate it for one week as I'm going to stay overnight at least. I find it very similar to both Kathmandu and Patna's Durbar Square although the buildings are fantastic they all have the same theme. Braktapur has lots of interesting wee backstreets and really is a fascinating place all round but realistically though I have come in search for the Potters Square, which I am dying ... read more

Geo: 27.7029, 85.3182 This is now my 3rd time here but first chance to explore. I'm staying in Thamel which is the main tourist area and is filled with shops selling woolly hats, scarves, jumpers etc for the hills. Millions of felt items, prayer flags, maps, postcards, book shops, tea shops and lots of western restaurants and cafes... What a choice after a month of Garlic Soup, Sherpa Stew and Dal Baht! With no shops to speak of except for Manang and Namche Bazaar, which you could buy essentials for the trekking! So I've been pretty tired after all my escapades and decided to try and relax for a few days - although it took me at least a day and a half for my body to actually heat up again! It's been so incredibly cold ... read more

Geo: 28.1911, 85.2986 After meeting John and Lindsay in the Everest Steak House, I bumped into Chris from the Annapurna Circuit who's heading off white water rafting in the morning… and after a few beers I decide to join him, (even though I am completely exhausted... at least I can see again (that's another story)), sure what else would I be doing on Hogmanay. So much for a few rest days in Kathmandu! So up at 6am, packed and away! What am I doing… honestly? I went up to the rafting place and they could fit me in, so I signed up for 2 days, paid and I'm on a bus heading to the top of the Bhote Kosi River for a Grade 4+ white water rafting experience. I tell you ignorance is bliss, I couldn't ... read more

Geo: 27.7, 86.7333 More trekking notes... Okay, so despite being pretty done in from my Annapurna Circuit and Poon Hill expedition, I have, as long as I can remember, wanted to go to Everest Base Camp (EBC). Not only for the challenge to make it into base camp, battling against the altitude and climbs, but also for the views of the highest mountain on the planet, and the incredible Khumbu glacier. So even before I'm down from Annapurna, I have decided to take on my next challenge and head into Everest Base Camp. I met a lovely older couple in Ghandruk on the way down (who live in Stornoway) who educated me in this trek and provide me with details of a company in Kathmandu to contact, I think it would be a beautiful way to ... read more
