Geo: 28.5483, 83.8037 My trekking notes won't interest most, they are more a reference for me to look back on names, places, heights and what the day was like. Even though altitudes may not look like you're going far in a day these are almost all long 6-8 hour walking days up and down along the way. I struggled deciding which trek to do, it was between the Annapurna Circuit and Everest Base Camp trek but by all accounts Annapurna is the more scenic which I have decided on so I'll soon see. In Pokhara I went in and out various trekking places before making any decisions, trying to guage prices and what was involved. I decided on Annapurna to be inclusive of accommodation and food which saved me having to worry about anything while I ... read more

Geo: 28.2636, 83.9724 After a long, long 26 hour trip from Darjeeling to Pokhara with Tony, Janine and Lynne, and two blow outs later... I arrive in Pokhara, Nepal's second largest city thankfully in one piece. We got jeep from Darjeeling to Silguri which had a blow out coming down the mountain, which was changed on a very precarious part of the road side, we then got the bus to Panitanki, walked to the Indian Immigration to get our leaving stamps, and walked over an incredible bridge, and into Nepal. We went through an arch confirming our arrival to Nepal, and we checked into Border Control, I got a 3 month visa, although I'll probably not stay here that long. We then jumped a bus from the border town direct to Pokhara bypassing Kathmandu altogether but ... read more

Geo: 27.04, 88.2636 I've just arrived in Darjeeling and it's stunning, I got the sleeper train from Kolkata but there was a few dodgy going's on involving was seemed to be the police and prisoner (maybe 2) and some Indian guy being very aggressive with them?? Don't know exactly what was going on but it was right beside me! Anyway, I arrived and jumped a shared jeep with 3 young Canadians that I met in the Blue Sky Cafe in Kolkata, plus an Italian couple which made the numbers us to six sharing. I jumped the front seat of the jeep which I loved, the trip took us 3hrs 30mins to get to Darjeeling and my first views of the Himalaya's were snow capped and mighty! Strangely enough I don't feel like I'm still in India, ... read more

Geo: 22.6473, 88.3104 I really enjoyed Kolkata it was a real Cosmopolitan feel to it in comparison to everywhere else so far. Their doesn't seem to be any rickshaws in the center though instead it's all bright yellow cabs and old buses. These cabs and buses are great (I really am a petrol head) I love all the colors and take a trip on one of the buses to head over the Howrah bridge to the Flower Markets. The markets were lovely, I enjoyed just having a wander through. My friend Mary and I visited Mother Theresa's Mother House which was so peaceful, we visited Mother Theresa's room which was very simple and very humbling with litteraly her bed, a desk and chair, a picture of the pope, a crucifix above her bed, a clock and ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi November 11th 2011

Geo: 25.282, 82.9563Varanasi is an amazing place, the holy River Ganges, the Ghat's and the lanes, I find myself strangely loving this place!! Although death surrounds us and the sights and smells of the Burning Ghats will never leave me, it's also such a spiritual place for the people who bathe in it, wash their clothes in it, and ultimately give their dead to it.Families bring their sick to the Ganges to bathe before they die because it is their holy place. I saw a woman in a rickshaw all hooked up to a drip being taken by her family to the river before she died. Although I don't know enough about these religions, people come from all over India to bathe and be cremated here. Certain groups of people are not allowed to be cremated ... read more

Geo: 26.862, 80.9359Thankfully my hotel is just across from the train station so I manage to dodge the tuktuk's and just walk over to the hotel. I'm only staying here one night and I'm kind of glad as there isn't another tourist anywhere in sight! I went out to explore, jumped in a rickshaw (after I agreed a price) for a tour round but it doesn't look a very nice place, really dirty and no sights to see. I did stumble on a huge local market though which reminded me of the Barras markets, I enjoyed watching them shouting out what I presume was prices and deals of the day.I ate in a local dabba, but it was funny when I walked in everyones' eyes were on me, it felt a bit weird. I was fascinated ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra November 7th 2011

Geo: 26.9847, 78.1019I arrived in Agra somehow a day early (although I didn't realise it at the time). I managed to get a train booked and thankfully the journey was pretty uneventful. I couldn't see out any windows as I was on the top bunk in sleeper class which was the only ticket I could get. Anyway I got checked in and went out a wander to find the Taj Cafe as recommended by the Lonely Planet, it was nice enough and I had my first banana lassi which was yum. I wandered round to Joney's place which is the smallest restaurant I've seen, it was tiny with fabulous bright furniture and is a big hit with travelers, a real fun place. I still can't get over the cows everywhere stopping the traffic, or making vehicles ... read more

Geo: 28.6137, 77.1834So I arrived in Delhi on Thursday 3 Nov 2011, the flight was great, no hassles, plus I managed to get a sleep after I'd had my dinner and watched a couple of movies. I had a window seat and thoroughly enjoyed the views. The first sights were in the morning of the mountains in Afghanistan near Kabul, on the way toward India. I could make out some towns or villages but from this height they almost looked like mere matchsticks laid out on the ground. On my way into Delhi I spotted the impressive Lotus Temple, oddly enough a golf course (which I didn't expect), the city and parks and the lower I got the chaos on the roads, which I was about to experience.I got through customs no bother and got chatting ... read more

Geo: 55.8656, -4.25722After some last minute packing, which entailed Annemarie and Willie re-distributing the weight in my backpack for me because I hadn't even had a run through with it yet and it was way off balance, Dad dropped Raymie and I off at Glasgow International Airport, It was kind of Raymie to come out with me and keep the nerves at bay as I think it just dawned on me what I was actually doing! I had quit my job at BAA that I was really enjoying, and bought a one way ticket to Delhi, booking only my first four nights' accommodation in a decent hotel near the main train station in Delhi, which was bit of a buffer, and three nights' accommodation in Agra, although I didn't know how I was going to get ... read more

Geo: 55.8656, -4.25722I've really enjoyed my adventures but it's nice to be back home. Dad and Val pick us up at the airport and we have all the family round for dinner to hear of our tales and see lots of pictures, special interest of course being Diane, John and Amber. It's been a real inspiration away off traveling and I hope to do much more in the future.... read more
