Geo: 22.6473, 88.3104 I really enjoyed Kolkata it was a real Cosmopolitan feel to it in comparison to everywhere else so far. Their doesn't seem to be any rickshaws in the center though instead it's all bright yellow cabs and old buses. These cabs and buses are great (I really am a petrol head) I love all the colors and take a trip on one of the buses to head over the Howrah bridge to the Flower Markets. The markets were lovely, I enjoyed just having a wander through. My friend Mary and I visited Mother Theresa's Mother House which was so peaceful, we visited Mother Theresa's room which was very simple and very humbling with litteraly her bed, a desk and chair, a picture of the pope, a crucifix above her bed, a clock and I don't think anything else. Although I didn't realise it when I arrived, her tomb in the church down stairs from her room and I can't believe that I'm standing right in front of it, there are lovely words laid out in flowers on top of it. One of the many sisters hand me a couple of leaflets on Mother Theresa and a piece of paper to write any intentions on and shows me the wooden box where to place them. Mass is due to be said in around half an hour so while we wait, we go into the museum which details Mother Theresa's life, her humanitarian work to being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, she was quite a lady. We then go to mass with around 60 sisters and a number of novices, its a beautiful experience. On leaving we visit Mother Theresa's Home which is an Orphanage just down the road, thankfully we didn't get to meet any of the children as I think Mary would have been taking them home with her, but it was getting late.
On the way back to the hotel we get a bit lost but find the most incredible local market, this is where the tuktuk's and rickshaws are hanging out! We pass so many markets stalls selling all sorts, there is meat hanging on the side of the street, live chicken's in baskets, herbs, spices, vegetables, grocers, tailors etc. all next to each other. They are shouting and bartering and selling and the place has a real busy hectic vibe which is exciting to watch, thankfully we find our way out of the maze of markets and back to our hotel but it was quite a day.
Next I visited the Victoria Memorial Hall again with Mary but also with Karney who we met a couple of times. He's a real interesting guy who is out filming ecological stuff, he says that there is not an actual sewage system in Kolkata and instead everything flows into, and meets the Ganges, it is in turn being farmed to provide fish food (but don't ask me more details was getting complicated! Anyway we visit the Memorial and Gardens and also the Planetarium which I enjoyed although tourist stuff. Everyone speaks to you here even if it just a 'hello' in passing or a 'where do you come from!' and although I don't mind at the minute I'm sure I'll tire of it at some point.
