Geo: 14.8667, 101.7Leaving Surin I was stopped by a guy on a moped for a photo, turns out he's a big cycling fan and loved my courage at cycling through Thailand, the road is still pretty busy on leaving but comes and goes the same as other days. I enjoy my many stop offs and touring on the way into Bangkok and first stop from Surin is Buri Ram as I'm still trying to keep the kilometers down. I love all the interaction on the road, from the guys on the building sites (unharnessed and up a number of stories) all shouting and waving with their big straw hats and balaclavas, to the ladies on their mopeds waving, their beautiful big smiles and thumbs up on the way past, to the kids piled onto bikes on the way ... read more

Geo: 14.89, 103.49It's still tough getting back on the bike when I leave Ubon but I'll just take it easy and try and be careful so I don't do any more damage, and I'm pleased that my route out passes a number of ruines and temples which are meant to be very like Angkor, so I can enjoy some exploring. I found my route out and set off towards Si Sa Ket, the roadside shops and stores which mainly consist of bamboo shops selling beds, sunshades/huts, hammocks, baskets etc. many of which have designs painted or burned into them although some are still plain are great. I get lots of shout outs on the road, and loads of thumbs up and it seems like I'd better get used to them, I love it and it makes ... read more

Geo: 15.2389, 104.857Despite having a look around Ubon (short for Ubon Ratchathani) for familiar places I can find none, not even a hint, it's like I was never here before but I definitely was. Even looking for the hospital, although I found it on the map, when I cycled out it wasn't 'this' hospital I stayed in so I must have even remembered the wrong name, interesting.I stay in Ubon a couple of days to see some of the many temples and sights which are stunning; it's a nice place despite not finding my bearings! I end up staying on my route out of town towards Sisaket to make things easier however I still cycle around during the day as I've a lot of catching up although I'm still in quite a lot of pain. Near ... read more

Geo: 15.2447, 105.229Chong Mek obviously doesn't get many tourist that stay here going by the surprised looks I get, but the looks are soon replaced, bursting into beautiful big smiles instead and shouts of 'sawadee ka' and thumbs up, while I wander around their market. I find it hilarious some of the items they try to sell when I'm clearly touring by bicycle but still baskets and handmade blankets are put under my nose, as well as the compulsory pashminas, I love these small, more rural types of towns and join in with their amusement! So, I explored in the evening further before resting up to start on my ‘slow' journey to Ubon, I'm determined to take it easy and ensure I get well, it's been a long layup. When I leave, I notice my first ‘safety ... read more

Geo: 15.1332, 105.783Yep I was relieved to get back to the hotel in Pakse to find that my bike was where I left it and everything looked to be in order, phew... Strangely enough I only have a couple of pictures of Pakse, it's not that there weren't things to take pictures of, I just didn't. I find that I'm embarrassed when at the market to take photos because my flash is stuck on with my broken screen so I can't be discrete - I need to get it fixed but no-where can help me so guess I will need to wait until Bangkok. So my few pictures are mainly of the way out and into Thailand. Although the first night I stayed in a first floor balcony room, the next night I was on the ... read more

Geo: 16.4958, 105.756This was a bit of a rash decision, when I left Konglor I basically got a jumbo tuk tuk out to the main road and jumped on a local bus for Savannakhet, the bus however was currently being fixed at the side of the road and although the journey should have taken 3 hours it ended up taking 5, oh well. Although fairly uneventful, the scenery was lovely with mountains on one side and when you could see it, the mighty Mekong River on the other. I was told when to get off the bus (by several of the locals) but I seemed to be in the middle of no-where, I was directed to a minibus which I was hoping was included as I was way outside the city. Thankfully it was and it ... read more

Geo: 17.9533, 104.761OMG what a terrifying, exhilarating, mesmerizing, exciting experience… Konglor Caves in the mid east Laos valley. I know I keep throwing myself out of my comfort zone but boy o'boy I did it again!Thankfully I don't look into new adventures in too much detail before I do them because I know I wouldn't put myself through the things I have. But I'm living the dream, living a travelers' life and throwing myself in at the deep end but strangely loving every achievement, every goal met, which outweighs some of the heart pounding terror involved!!!From Vientiane I got the local bus straight to Konglor which takes around 7 hours, the journey on route was amazing, flat rice paddies backed with the vertical mountains, we climbed up, round and over the mountains to get into the ... read more

Geo: 17.97, 102.61What a fantastic experience, I love Buddha Park!  Funny how things just get you, Buddha Park was definitely that for me, one of the highlights of Vientiane from the very start. I stopped a local bus on the main road and asked the driver for Buddha Park (everyone knows where the tourists want to go), so after a nod confirming my destination I jumped on board and grabbed a seat, the park is around 25km south of Vientiane and I was told it should take around an hour.  I love experiencing local transport and his one didn't disappoint, although the bus looked brand new with a donated by Japan sticker on the side, the people are brilliant, jumping onboard with their shopping which could be all sorts.  BBQ sticks of full fish or chicken, sacks ... read more

Geo: 17.97, 102.61On arrival I found a bed at a backpackers and dived out to explore, I stumbled on the night market which in comparison to other places I've been was very posh. All the stalls have red canopies overhead and it's set on the waterfront instead of closed off roads, it's very clean, and sells everything from clothes and trinkets to food, plus there's a lot of tourists around. Vientiane is a pretty city and has a really nice relaxed feel about it, I find it strange however that the other side of the river is Thailand which you can cross into via the nearby Friendship Bridge, this means that the traffic on the river is next to nothing although out of town I did see a few boats. One of my main jobs while ... read more

Geo: 18.6073, 102.504It was a bumpy 5-6 hour journey from Luang Prabang by bus but the scenery on the way down was stunning. It's full of twists and turns, highs and lows and numerous villages dotted along the whole length of the road, a truly fascinating and eye opening journey. Many of the houses are traditional wooden built with thatch roofs and are really unique to this area, the last time I saw anything even similar was the Rong Houses in Vietnam although here it was a far smaller scale (unfortunately I only have video of the area, no pictures). As it is morning time, many villages have their markets up and running and at one stop the butcher section is battling off the dust from the road which is normal here, all sorts of dirt ... read more
