This morning we checked out of our hotel early and stored our bags with the front desk to pick up again before we caught the bus back to Kuala Lumpur in the afternoon. Our main goal for the day was to see the BOH Palas Tea Plantation and Factory and to purchase some world class tea. The tea plantation is actually in Brinchang, the town next to Tanah Rata where we spent the night, so we hired the same taxi driver we got yesterday to take us to the plantation. He was a great driver to hire because both his grandfather and father worked on the plantation as tea pickers. Our taxi driver was able to teach us a lot about the tea process because he knew it first hand - he grew up as a ... read more

There are days when travelling that it seems that everything goes wrong. This is one of those days. Actually, it started last night after we left Brunei. We left for the Brunei airport at 2pm. The flight is only 2 hours and 20 minutes long and it left at 4pm, but we didn't get into our hotel room in Kuala Lumpur until 10:15pm. Seem like a long transit time? Yeah, it was. It started with Elysia's genius idea to take the train instead of the bus from the Low Cost Carriers terminal (where Air Asia flys into) to the Kuala Lumpur city centre. Both supposedly take about the same time (they claim the train is 10 minutes shorter- just under an hour), but the train is double the price (train=25 ringgits for 2, or 4 bucks ... read more

Ich bin ja ... read more

Today after another breakfast of Nasi Lemak and Maher feeling a little under the weather, maybe a cold from the drop in temperatures from KL to Cameron Highland; we were picked up at 08.45 for our 1/2 day tour. We first visited the butterfly farm where there were some of the most beautiful and biggest species of butterfly I have ever seen, along with an array of other animals from leaf frog to scorpions! We then stopped at the tea plantation where we could see 600acres of tea plants being harvested by 200 workers. The plantation dating back to 1929 was and still is owned by a Scottish family and harvested every 3 weeks by foreigners. From there we headed to the moss forest where we got to see a variety of medicinal plants and things ... read more

Arrived into tropical Kuala Lumpur, staying in the centre of the bustling Chinatown district lined with street-stalls and markets, and dining on seafood at an excellent Malaysian restaurant. Early the next morning took a coach up to the Cameron Highlands, driving along steep roads lined with a huge panoply of election posters (the majority depicting the blue scales of the incumbent Barisan Nasional government). Took a hot walk through the jungle to find the world's largest flower, the bright red splash of colour (about 1m across !) incongruously standing out from the dense green undergrowth. Later had a tour and a great cup of tea overlooking the Boh plantation up in the hills, followed by cake with freshly-picked strawberries at a local farm. Headed south to Taman Negara in the dense jungle heart of the Malay ... read more

For my Grade 6 Excursion week we went to Taman Negara jungle in Malaysia. First we took a flight to Kuala Lumpur, and then a 5 hour bus trip (it would probably take 3 hours 45 minutes by car) to Kuala Tahan. On the way there, we ate at a Chinese Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. Then we took a small boat trip across the Tembling River to the Mutiara Tamen NegraResort and we were assigned our cabins. The next day we went on a long hike up to 448-meter-high Bukit Teresek and went down to a canopy walk. The canopy walk was about 500 meters and went quite high above the forest floor and had magnificent views of the surrounding rainforest and the Tembling River. The whole hike including getting to the canopy walk was about 2km ... read more

The next part of our journey was meant to be a quick stopover in Kuala Lumpur then a flight back to the Philippines to enjoy a further 3 weeks there. Sadly while we were in KL we received news that Sophie’s grandfather had passed away at the great age of 98 so plans were quickly adjusted in order to fly home for the funeral. This would mean that we would have to forego our time in the Philippines but it will always be there and we can return at a later date to enjoy more of what this country has to offer. We’ve been lucky enough to pass through KL on a number of occasions and of all the cities we have been to this would rate as one of our favourites. It’s such an easy ... read more

We set out on an afternoon tour of the Cameron Highlands, costing 50RM each. We started at the Mossy Forest on Gunung Brinchang. We walked through the moss-covered trees and moss-formed walkways, looking at cup-like pitcher plants and caking our shoes in mud. None of us slipped over, thank goodness, although there were a few near-misses! the guide gave us leaves which are used in Tiger Balm, told us to screw them up and then to sniff them. They smelled just like Tiger Balm. After the forest, we went to a high point where we looked out over the highlands. The scenery is truly stunning, and the cool temperature was much more to my liking. We stopped by Sungei Palas tea plantation, although the factory itself was closed to the public. There were a few people ... read more

We laid in late, then bummed around until our bus picked us up at 2:30pm. We had the luxury of being the only four passengers on the minibus, all the way to the Cameron Highlands. We arrived at Bringchang's Hotel Rainbow around 9pm, and after resting for a bit, Sophie and I headed out for food. We went to KFC and were disgusted at how rudely we were treated by the staff. They originally told us we'd have to wait ten minutes for our food, and when we agreed, they upped it to thirty minutes. Knowing they were just trying to get out of cooking our food, we agreed to wait the half-hour. While we were waiting, they were blatantly slating us and complaining about having to actually do their jobs. After fifteen minutes, they gave ... read more
