Wednesday, 17th September 2014 My journey to Cameron Highlands started at 10.30pm this evening when I boarded a comfortable Konsortium Bus from Golden Mile Tower. This was probably the longest coach journey ever undertaken up to this point of my life, a journey lasting 8.5 hours. Since I was never a coach person, I was certainly apprehensive about the whole experience. However, taking a direct coach from Singapore beats all other modes of transportation options available, avoiding the hassle of flying into Ipoh and figuring out how to make my way up the mountains from there. Cameron Highlands had been on my cards for a very long time. Lured by the prospects of cooler climate surrounded by tea and strawberry plantations, I was looking forward to uncover this piece of paradise closed to home. I was ... read more

Hey you lot We have had the most relaxing week on Tioman Island, it really is a beautiful place to be. The island is tiny and only has a couple of small roads, most places are still only accessed by boats as there is no other way of getting there. We stayed a couple of nights in a village called Tekek a really cute chalet surrounded by a beautifully kept garden. Other than a snorkel trip out to Coral Island for the day we havent done much other than hang in hammocks, relax and eat the freshest fish you can imagine bbq'd to our liking, this has been perfect for us after all that travelling around. Although Im not the bravest snorkeler around I did give it a go and saw some of the most beautiful ... read more

We have just had the most fabulous 3 days up here in the cool Cameron Highlands. We have been staying in a little town called Tanah Rata, which has such a lovely vibe to it. The first day we just mooched a bit, ate good food and got to know the place. The second day we booked ourselves on an all day trip with a brilliant company called Eco Cameron, they specialise in all things nature with an environmentally friendly approach. Our guide turned out to be somewhat of a legend with all things nature and botanical, Francis you were da man! Our day of adventure started out with a 2 hour trek through the rainforest in search of the famous Rafflesia flower, these things are so rare and only grow in certain parts of Asia. ... read more

Dinsdag 17 Juni 2014 Ik werd 's nachts gewekt toen men hostelgenoten hun voetbalmatch gedaan was. Help! Matt rijdt de ... read more

HE SAID... We woke at 5am (in Melaka) for a 6.30am start to Taman Negara National Park. We wouldn’t be arriving at our hotel in Kuala Tahan until 5pm, so we walked to Restaron Melaka Raya for a teh tarik(pulled sweet milky tea) at 6am. We jumped into a minibus at 6.30am and travelled north east until we arrived at the Gemas rail station at 7.45am. We noticed children going to school on the way, as their school day starts at 7am and finishes around midday. We dropped our bags at the station and walked straight to Gemas Curry Point for breakfast at 8am. We shared a roti canai (flat flaky Indian bread served with curry sauce), a thosai (thin crispy fermented rice flour pancakes) and a couple of teh tariks – it was sensational! The ... read more

HE SAID... With a six hour minibus trip to Tanah Rata ahead of us, we woke early (in Melaka) and walked around the corner to Restoran Melaka Raya for a teh tarik (pulled sweet milky tea) and take away banana rotis (flat flaky Indian bread). This small street–front cafe with small plastic tables and chairs is open 24 hours, and it serves incredible food and tea. We jumped in the minibus at 7.30am and began our journey north towards the Cameron Highlands. We pulled into Tapah for a quick toilet stop at 11am, and stepping from the comfort of the air–conditioned minibus into the furnace outside was breathtaking – it was incredibly hot! We then began our slow and eternally snaking journey upwards into the Cameron Highlands. The road was narrow with steep drop offs over ... read more

I thought I'd finished writing about this area, we had just one day left but unfortunately it rained. This made for a whole new view of the mountains in mist. Reminded me a lot of the Lake District back home. Also followers of our blog, Bob and Linda, asked for photos of around town as Bob lived here years ago. So here goes, more photos for Bob and anyone else who is interested!... read more

Two things the Cameron Highlands are famous for are the jungle/ rainforest walks and the tea plantations. We bought a map and began exploring. First we set off on a jungle trail to Robinson waterfalls, the path was fairly flat but strewn with fallen down trees that had to be climbed over. Now I don’t mind that bit but I do worry what creature or insect may be lurking unseen just where I need to put my hand! The vegetation was amazing, twice the size of anything we have in the UK. The jungle trail ended up close to the road that led to one of the largest plantations so of course we had to go and see it. After walking for over 5 kms we came to the tea rooms/factory. Most of the road to ... read more

Our Thailand visa was coming to an end so we needed to travel South into Malaysia. We chose the Cameron Highlands as a complete change to beach locations. We booked a bus down to Ipoh, with the intention of getting an onward but up to the highlands. The agent told us it would be a Malaysian bus and from past experience we knew they are highly air conditioned. So with all our warmest clothes on we turned up for the bus at 9am. It wasn’t a Malaysian bus at all , it was Thai with virtually no air con. Lie number one! As we travelled South the temperature gradually rose and we began to melt. At the border we had to hump our luggage off and carry it over in order for it to be x ... read more
