After a good start to Malaysia, we left bustling Georgetown for the calmness of the Cameron Highlands, around 5 hours away inland. When we got to the bus station at 7am we were pleased to see Thea and Jeremi (the Canadian brother & sister) there, who we had dinner with the night before, and it turned out we would all be on the same bus – this is how we gained travel buddies (and friends) for the next few weeks! The first bus was nice and comfortable, but after a stop in Ipoh about 3 hours in, we had to change to a small mini-van which wasn’t so great; it was another couple of hours until we were dropped in the town of Tanah Rata, the gateway to the trails through the Cameron Highlands, passing some ... read more

After leaving the jungle we headed for the East Coast of Malaysia to Cherating. Cherating is a beautiful quiet fishing village most notable for serving up fantastic Seafood and attracting surfers during monsoon season. As I had done something to my knee and . . . OOOhhh . . . had a . . bit . . of a bad . . .shoulder!!! (honest) I decided to miss out on doing loop da loops on a surf board and head straight for the seafood! for less than 20 squids! we were served a plate full of crabs in a homemade spicy sauce, a plate full of Tiger Prawns in another homemade spicy sauce and a plate full of deep fried Calamari, washed down with 6 cans of Tiger Beer! not bad (burp) After Cherating we took ... read more

ooh oooh, Ahh ahhhh! . . .Er . . . I mean, we've landed in the jungle of Taman Negra National Park :) Taman Negra National Park covers 3 areas of Malaysia, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu. The rainforest has been recorded to be 130 million years old and is the oldest tropical rainforest on the planet as it was not affected by an ice age and has no volcano activity nearby. We are staying in a wooden hut about a mile out of the main spot for entering the park which is really peaceful, the only noise we get is of the surrounding jungle. . . The first day we went rapid shooting, which basically means you go thrashing into a rapid head first in a thin river boat and get absolutley drenched! good fun! after ... read more

I crossed the country to the East coast and ferried to the island of Pulau Tiomin. Some footage of it is claimed to have been filmed here for South Pacific (1958!!!!). Well for me it has been spoiled. If you were going to the super resorts at super prices I am sure it is lovely. Many young people come to get their PADI open water certificates - I would tell them to go to Tobago - it was nicer there! I was spoilt by by stay on the beach in Thailand... I swam every day out to the pontoon and had a very relaxing time. It also happened to be to be the worst accommodation I had stayed in the whole trip, so left a couple of days early to go to Singapore, so travelled on ... read more

The journey into the Cameron Highlands was far from relaxing and included numerous risky overtaking manoeuvres and an example of what can happen if it goes wrong (we passed the aftermath of a head-on collision between a van and a lorry), but we made it unscathed to the region's main centre, Tanah Rata. Despite being 5 degrees north of the equator and a third of the way round the globe, I felt very much at home in the Cameron Highlands. The weather is permanently like the British summer (20°C with lots of rain), the main crops are strawberries and tea, and there are lots of Indian restaurants. I spent the first day exploring the town and had dinner at one of the Indians - a delicious mutton curry with two rotis (like a savoury Danish pastry), ... read more

Taman Negara – I was up early, jetlag or not to catch the bus from Uncle Hans, to be found in Chinatown unsurprisingly. My destination was Taman Negara, which is purported to be the oldest rainforest in the world (130 million years old). The journey initially involved a drive of 4 hours from KL to Kuala Tembling and then a 3 hour boat journey up the river to Kuala Tahan. Most of the occupants of the bus/boat had taken the package that Uncle Hans offers which is 3 days 2 nights but I didn’t see the point in travelling 2 days to spend just 1 day in the park plus I wanted to do some exploration on my own so just paid for the travel and a night jungle walk. The journey in the boat was bum-numbing ... read more

Advised by a helpful lady at the front desk not to drive the old road because it is dangerous provided us with a dilemma. Should we follow her advice or that of Trip Advisor, which didn't mention any danger? Dean reasoned that it couldn't be worse than the Black Spur, so we opted for the old road. The drive started with Eleanor improving her vocabulary (most noticeably the skill of using 'chap' as an adjective) as we admired the scenery and little old wooden stalls clinging to the side of the road selling fruit and vegetables. For the first part of the trip, the road was fine and although the bends were quite spew-worthy, we weren't able to go so fast to make Eleanor feel sick. Once we crossed the border into the next 'state', the ... read more

A quick 2h bus ride later, and I was in Tanah Rata, one of the townships of the Cameron Highlands. This area was established as a hill station by the British during the colonial days, and to this day preserves its holiday/ retreat feel, with the ever-pleasantly cool climate and fresh mountain air. It's certainly no hidden gem though, and has entertained many a vacationeer for the better half of the last century. As LP puts it, it's "very much on the banana pancake trail". It's another one of those places that most Singaporeans would have visited in their youths, but this was my first time here. What can I say, better late than never! Apart from its famous tea plantations, apiaries and strawberry and butterfly farms, Cameron Highlands is also the location of the big ... read more

Prekvapko bus ... read more
