Il y ... read more

February 22nd Saturday Went to find the Bird Park and other places that are situated in the Botanical Gardens, double checked the way with the receptionist and she told me to go to the Old KL Train station instead of Dayabumi Complex, so I crossed the river and followed the train line, as I got to the KL station a chinsese tourist asked e for directions and I said it was straight on.. so I carried on, soon realised he had stopped following me. Hmm. Ok so I carry on walking, following the train line, for a long way, much further than I thought it should take, I got the map out and checked my nearest road name to see if it looked like I was going the right way and it seemed that way. I ... read more

The Rafflesia is the largest flower in the world. It can grow up to one metre in diameter & weigh up to 10 kg in weight! There are several species of Rafflesia and they are only found in a few places in SE Asia. And it is becoming more rare, as the rainforests they best grow in, are being diminished by logging & clearing. The first Western botanist to discover the Rafflesia was a Frenchman in Java in the late 1700's. But his illustrations & notes were seized by the British & were not rediscovered until 1954. Meanwhile in 1818, a British botanist collected another species in Sumatra and named the flower in honour of the very notable Sir Stamford Raffles, modern founder of Singapore. Also commonly know as the 'corpse flower' because of its stench ... read more

Geo: 2.845, 104.16I had heard so much about Tioman Island from many Malay as well as tourists and ex-pats alike that it was in my plans to visit while here in Malaysia. So after booking my ferry ticket and storing my bicycle at the hotel I was staying at in Mersing I headed off for a new adventure. I've been on several of these ferries now and although dreading the first few that I caught (thanks for looking after me Danny), I have to say I'm getting a bit more used to them although they can be really rough affairs.Tioman Island's Salang Beach was actually featured in the 1958 American musical movie South Pacific as the beach called 'Bali Hai' and is a stunning place to be... with crystal clear seas, white sandy beaches, tropical fish ... read more

Up early and checked out with Wayne and I madly searching for baby formula and towels (the things that our guide had mentioned by email I should try to bring along to the Elephant Santuary). No luck with the formula (it turns out this was not a problem as the sanctuary had plenty and they are beginning to wean some of elephants off it) and Wayne managed to grab towels from a hardware store (many shops and stalls do not open till after 10am so this was a win). Our driver Mr Zul arrived and we began our drive out to Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary (drive to sanctuary, storing our bags all day and getting us to the airport on time MYR600). Mr Zali had given instructions for us to stop at a petrol station and ... read more

Santa mustn't have got the memo that we cancelled Christmas and we all woke to goodies by our beds then quickly headed downstairs to the van to take us to the Cameron Highlands for the day (2-3hrs). We stopped on the way for breakfast. Dunkin Donuts for most of us but Wayne chose a soup and giant chunk of meat. Our first stop once in the highlands was a waterfall which was obviously a popular swimming hole for the local kids and our guide bought us all some banana fritters. Then we visited an Oran Asli family who showed us their tiny house made from bamboo. 'Michael' showed us some target practice using a blow pipe and much to everyone's shock and surprise Wayne agreed to have a go and nailed it first go (the local ... read more

Geo: 4.47049, 101.377Two updates in one day; you people don't know how (un)lucky you are! You can say thank you to the weather man for making it torrentially downpour most of the day and therefore forcing me to retreat to a cafe for my scone, jam and what I think was clotted cream- how typically English. This entry comes with a warning: long entry. Make a cup of tea and grab a biccie before you read any further. Yesterday morning I left the hostel at 7am to get the bus to the Cameron highlands. One of the hostel owners offered to drive me to the bus station, thus saving me a 6:30am departure - that hostel was amazing. What should have been a 5 hour journey turned into a 6.5 hour slog. The driver stopped frequently ... read more

Friday 30th We wake to an amazing birdsong and the sound of monkeys. We check ourselves out and no bites, so the bed bugs kept away. We have made a good choice of guest house. We are staying in the village of Kuala Tahan across the river from the park. After breakfast we catch a river taxi across the river and start walking to the Canopy Walk. Within a few hundred metres our bodies are seriously leaking ! there's 90% humidity. The whole area is dense forest and the walks are on boards. On the way we see a small bird, and I mean small, and then a group of monkeys swing pass just above us. We reach the canopy walk, the highest and longest in the world. There are five of them 40ft up in ... read more

Kuala Rompin is my favorite place for a w eekend especially after going through hectic activities during weekdays. It is a place where i recharge myself and let go all the problems. It has the longest beach in Malaysia peninsula, facing the South China Sea. I like to drive along the beach, fishing and lie down on the beach at night looking at the sky.... read more
