We took the air conditioned bus from Penang to Tana Rata in the Cameron Highlands. This took about 5 hrs and cost about £3.50. We passed a lot of areas where there had been landslips. This was caused by recent heavy rain as well as illegal logging, people told us. (In the east of Malaysia there have been terrible floods recently with deaths and people losing their homes.) Our guesthouse was 2 minutes from the bus stop. The Cameron Highlands are much cooler than the lowlands, which was a releif! It rains here most afternoons it seems, but is sunny in the mornings. One of our prime interests in this area is the tea growing! (many readers will know that tea is my favourite drink, and almost an addiction). They also grow a lot of vegetables ... read more

Was man hier halt so Berg nennt.

After my adventures in mango buying went so well, I returned to the stand for more. Today the mango lady wasn't there so her sister helped me. Her sister doesn't really speak English and I don't speak Malay so we compromised on Chinese. Except that I kept answering her in Thai. One day at a time... Today I arrived at my school a little early, ready to work with 5 teachers over the course of the day. I saw people blowing up balloons, assembling prize bags for students, obviously preparing for a big event. I was then informed that classes were canceled for the whole morning so we could prepare for a big, one hour event. We sat and listened to speeches, music, guest speakers from the local government, and had a ribbon cutting ceremony. All ... read more

Sports days seem to be a popular tradition in Asia. I experienced them in China and in Thailand, and now, also in Malaysia. Schools in my area do it a bit differently. There are practice days, where the students learn new games and do trials, and then there's the actual sports days that determine the winners. Both are two day events. They're usually held earlier in the year, but many of my schools delayed them until the end for one reason or another. The school year ends in a week or so, so it's actually a nice break before exams. The students compete by gender and grade in a variety of events. Some events they do compete across grades. There's high jump, long jump, relay races, sprinting, shot put, and one school asked me for help ... read more

Saturday I slept late. I was thinking I might get a massage, but they were closed. Again. Probably for the best considering I think the cost is a bit more geared towards tourists than locals. I picked up my batik (it had to dry, etc) and then went to lunch at a restaurant my batik master suggested. The restaurant was buffet style, like what I enjoy at school each day, only bigger. I opted for curried fish, veggies, and my favorite, milk tea. The restaurant was popular and the people watching fantastic. I went to the beach for the afternoon. I took a large bottle of water and a book with me. Of course, the day with the best weather, I didn't bring my camera and only had my phone. I walked across the white sand, ... read more

Malaysia has some of the most beautiful beaches, particularly on the east coast. I've been itching to go to the beach for over a year now, so when I found out that there's a holiday this week I jumped at the chance. Monsoon season is starting already, so it's my last chance to go this year. Four days of the sea and sand sounds like a great way to relax before the end of the school year. It's only an hour's drive from home, so I made the trip easily. I checked into my guesthouse (or chalet, as they're known here) and made my way to the beach. It was only a five minute walk! I ate some fried rice at a restaurant on the beach (the view was better than the food) and it was ... read more

In the small town of Cherating there's a batik shop and art center on the main street. Since I've never tried to make a batik before, but have always liked looking at them, I decided to give it a try. The woman who runs/owns the shop is just the sweetest thing. She's kind, helpful, and has plenty of patience. Which is a lucky thing for me! I started out by tracing an elephant picture onto white cloth. Of course, I didn't realize at the time that I hadn't centered it. But that's one thing that you need to do, or else it throws off the border when you're painting, and later framing. She tried to assure me it wasn't a big deal, but I assured her that with my OCD it was a huge problem. If ... read more
