After my adventures in mango buying went so well, I returned to the stand for more. Today the mango lady wasn't there so her sister helped me. Her sister doesn't really speak English and I don't speak Malay so we compromised on Chinese. Except that I kept answering her in Thai.
One day at a time...
Today I arrived at my school a little early, ready to work with 5 teachers over the course of the day. I saw people blowing up balloons, assembling prize bags for students, obviously preparing for a big event. I was then informed that classes were canceled for the whole morning so we could prepare for a big, one hour event. We sat and listened to speeches, music, guest speakers from the local government, and had a ribbon cutting ceremony. All to celebrate ...

I was drinking some tea at work today and one of my teachers asked me what it was.
"It's Chinese tea," I answered.
"Oh, I thought it looked like mariJUana. Haha!"
Caught off guard, all I could get reply was, "No, it's tea. I swear it's tea."
D'oh!
Who knew hangers could be too big for your closet? The tea conversations continued today.
Teacher: What are you drinking?
Me: Tea.
Teacher: Chinese tea? Green tea?
Me: Yes.
Teacher: With no sugar?
Me: Yep. Chinese tea and sugar don't go together.
Teacher: Oh, so good for your health!
I feel like I've just stepped back in time about 2 years. I had this conversation in China so many times I stopped counting.
Cats are very talented. They help keep rodents and snakes away. They help keep the floor clean. They keep your feet warm. And sometimes they steal the fish right off your lunch plate.
Stupid cat.
In class one day we were having the students complete sentences based on a reading. The animals each had certain characteristics. The teacher was prompting one boy to repeat the text, and I was trying to act out the adjectives to help. "Harry Horse was very..." I started smiling and waving to indicated friendly and cheerful. "Harry Horse was very.... what?" the teacher asked again. "Bye bye?" the student suggested.
Earlier this week, my neighbor and his 2 year old daughter were washing the car. She got excited
when she saw me, and he managed to get her to return my wave. Today, when I got home, she saw me again. And waved. And waved. And waved. Both parents had to cajole her into the car.
As I was walking to the beach a group of middle/high school boys yelled hello, smiled and waved. On my way back up, they said hello again and asked if I'd take a photo with them. I sighed, not really in the mood.
"Okay, " I said.
All 7 of them let out a whoop and a "YES!"
Glad I changed my mind.
