It was an early start for me, I was getting picked up from the hostel and taken to the bus station by minivan. I managed to get some breakfast and headed down to get my key deposit and wait for my ride. When I got downstairs, there was no one about and when someone did turn up, it was all a bit if a rush, as they had to go and get someone else who could give me my money back and the minivan driver had turned up and then buggered off. Luckily, he was just waiting in his van around the corner. There were a few other pick-ups and soon we were deposited at the bus station in town. I had tried to book a minivan seat to get to the Cameron Highlands as it ... read more

Walking to the bus terminal in Kuala Lumpur I showed up and purchased a ticket ($RM30) bound for the Cameron Highlands. Around four hours later I had arrived into the town of Tanah Rata. The Cameron Highlands is made up of eight districts and townships (Tanah Rata being the largest) and is the main tea producing region in SE Asia. Strawberry farms and bee farms also abound the hillsides, and the mountains are covered in dense alpine rainforest. At an average elevation of 1,400 meters I felt cool temperatures that I hadn't experienced in over a month. It was a nice respite and I was eager to explore it all. You basically come to the Cameron Highlands for three reasons - the cooler temperatures (which I was happy to have, I had not been in a ... read more

23rd - 27th December 2016 Start: 10.30pm overnight coach from Beach Road (Singapore) to Tanah Rata (Cameron Highlands) End: 9.25pm Jetstar 3K0688 Flight (Kuala Lumpur to Singapore Changi Airport) This was a 4 Days 3 Nights trip to CH and KL that H and myself undertook last Christmas. It happened more than 8 months ago as I began to pen down the details of the journey only this afternoon. I guessed I could only include the highlights of this trip since it's been quite sometime ago. Memories of this trip have faded quite a fair bit. 1) Steamboat dinner at Restoran May Flower (Tanah Rata). This was comfort food on a wet and cold Christmas night in CH. The skies have been drizzling all day and nothing beats the warm hotpot with plenty of veggies (we ... read more

David here... The flight from Bali into Kuala Lumpur was uneventful, slightly late taking off and landing but nothing major. We landed and disembarked (I still find the way people get off planes strange, with each row from the front standing up and getting their hand luggage despite people standing in the gangway ready to get off right to the back of the plane) and got through immigration, security and bag collection easily before finding an ATM and then buying a bus ticket to KL Sentral. The journey into KL should take about an hour but traffic was horrendous so took almost 2 hours. We were a little worried as we had one goal for the evening, to get to Valentine Roti before it shut or ran out. Once at KL Sentral we knew we had ... read more

Geo: 3.97, 103.439First, thanks to those who sent us greetings of all sorts. We celebrated by attending church with wonderful people. Then drove east about 4 hours, stopping at reststops we were indeed the only caucasians, but we are used to it by now. Incredible jungle, palm and rubber plantations, stairways leading from the road into who knows where. We stopped to prepare sandwiches at a waterfalls - what brown water! As we arrived in the state of Pahang, and neared the coastal cities of Kuantan and Pekan, we noticed differences - durians sold everywhere for one thing, along the roadside. And lampposts with Kris designs (the ceremonial daggers) and photos of the Sultan and his wife (would she be a sultana?)The Ancasa is only 2 years old and luxurious and right on the edge off the big river, ... read more

One of the best experiences I ever had was when I visited the National Elephant Conservation Centre at Kuala Gandah. They are such beautiful animals, being rescued and cared for by some of the most passionate wildlife people I have ever met. It is well worth a visit. Friends made their own way there but we went on a tour which suited us much better. We had plenty of time there to learn about the plight of the elephants and to enjoy being so close to them. If you have a day to spare, try taking this tour url=https://www.viator.com/tours/Kuala-Lumpur/Private-Tour-Elephant-Orphanage-Sanctuary-Day-Tour-from-Kuala-Lumpur/d335-3705KUL25https://www... read more

Living overseas it's easy to get into a routine and to miss out on some of the things in your area. I've been here a year and a half and I just heard about the LaoZi temple. I like temples. They're usually quite peaceful and pretty. But this one was special and only half an hour from my house. Winding down a road, I parked, and realized I was looking at the dragon's tail. There's an ticket booth, but it's empty. In reality you pay at the end. I walked into the dragon's tail and enjoyed the breeze and blue sky overhead. There was artwork on the walls, each section with a different theme. After winding around for ages, and being spooked a little by dried leaves blowing in the wind (it's really quiet otherwise) I ... read more

Saturday 20th February 2016 Leaving one area famous for hiking we were heading straight for another in the Cameron Highlands. The Cameron Highlands is actually the size of Singapore and is situated in the north of Malaysia covering an area of 712 sq KM (gotta love Wikipedia!) and has a population of 38,417 (Gemma counted!) and was discovered by Sir William Cameron in 1885 and is at an elevation of 1,600 metres, and as a result is a little bit chillier than the rest of the country. We were heading here as we'd read about some hiking trails that could be managed alone all with varying levels of difficulty and as well as these, the area is famous for producing tea and has two very large tea plantations which look amazing. We caught the mini bus ... read more

Wednesday 17th February 2016 We left the hostel at 7:30am and took a taxi to the pick up point of our bus that would take us to the rain-forest of Taman Negara. We shared a small bus with approx 10 other people travelling with a company called Han travel who offered an all in one bus and boat transfer to the rain forest which had we organised this ourselves might have caused us some headaches. The first part of the journey was simple and after 3 hours we had arrived in a town called Kuala Tembelling which is a small town on the banks of a river. Here we had to wait 30 minutes until our boat departed. Being the first 2 people on the jetty we were first in line for the boat. The boat ... read more
